Chapter 49 - Chapter 1 – Vital Awakening (1964)

The streets of Marseille were quiet in the early morning, only the faint hum of distant trams and the occasional clatter of shutters stirring in the wind. Jovian Jorwick leaned against the cold stone of an alleyway, his hands stuffed into his jacket pockets. His eyes, sharp and calculating even at eight years old, scanned the streets as though he expected danger to appear at any moment.

He had always known he was different. While other children played with toys or chased each other in the sunlight, Jovian had felt a presence within him—a pulse, a heartbeat that seemed separate from his own. That presence had always answered him in subtle ways, guiding his instincts, strengthening his reflexes. It had a name: Vital Mirage.

The Stand manifested as a humanoid figure shimmering in golden and silver hues, ethereal yet solid, with piercing eyes that mirrored Jovian's own determination. Vital Mirage had always been by his side, silent, ever-vigilant, reacting faster than his conscious mind could process. It had saved him more times than he could count—once from a falling scaffold at his father's construction site, another time from a runaway carriage that had struck at precisely the wrong moment.

"Another day, another chance to see what you can do," Jovian murmured, stretching his arms. Vital Mirage mirrored his movements, fists glowing faintly with life energy that pulsed like molten light.

Today, however, felt different. There was tension in the air, a weight that Jovian couldn't ignore. As he walked through the narrow streets, the Stand's presence vibrated subtly, almost warning him. He tested a simple ability, focusing Hamon energy into his Stand for the first time deliberately. Vital Mirage responded immediately, its golden form radiating stronger, each step Jovian took leaving faint trails of shimmering light.

A young boy on the corner watched him from under a worn cap, curiosity and fear etched on his face. Jovian paused. "Don't be afraid. It's just… me," he said softly. Vital Mirage stepped slightly forward, protective, almost shielding Jovian without a word.

For years, he had hidden his Stand from the world. But deep down, he knew that this quiet life wouldn't last. Shadows of the past—and enemies he had yet to meet—were already moving toward him. Even now, Jovian felt it: the faintest tremor of danger, a whisper of malice carried on the breeze. He didn't yet know its source, but instinct told him it would be formidable, relentless.

He clenched his fists. Vital Mirage responded instantly, fists flaring with golden light. The pulse was stronger than ever, syncing perfectly with Jovian's heartbeat. He had always trained himself quietly, testing the limits of his Stand, exploring its abilities. Today, he would push it further.

He focused, and for the first time, he experimented with Vital Mirage's life-force manipulation. A loose cobblestone under his foot lifted slightly, suspended in the air as his Stand pulsed. He released it, and it slammed harmlessly into a wall with perfect precision. A thrill ran through him. This was only the beginning.

In the shadows, a figure watched him from the rooftops. Hidden, silent, calculating. Jovian did not notice yet, but the observer's eyes gleamed with a cold light. Soon, he would come to understand why Vital Mirage had always been there to protect him, why his instincts had always been sharper, faster, more precise than any ordinary child's.

Jovian exhaled, letting the golden light of his Stand wash over him. He knew, deep down, that his life was no longer ordinary. Danger would come, shadows would rise, and enemies would appear. But he also knew he was ready.

Vital Mirage stepped closer, fists at the ready, and Jovian felt a surge of determination. Together, they would face whatever came. Whatever the world threw at him, whatever darkness approached, he would stand against it.

The adventure had begun.
