Chapter 19 - Smart people

The throne room did not feel the same after the realization settled, as the silence now carried a quality that resembled surveillance rather than absence. The vast space remained unchanged in structure, yet the way it pressed against his awareness made it clear that stillness here was never truly empty.

Ethan remained seated for a moment longer, posture steady and composed as if nothing significant had shifted beneath the surface of his understanding. Internally, however, his thoughts had already reorganized into something sharper, more deliberate, and far less willing to rely on anything unverified.

"…Alright, new rule," he thought carefully, maintaining external calm as the implications aligned into something actionable. "…if I cannot trust my memory, then I stop using it as a source and start treating it like unverified information."

He rose from the throne without hesitation, the motion controlled and deliberate as the chamber responded subtly to his movement. The weight of the space shifted with him, not in resistance, but in recognition, as if the act of standing carried its own authority.

"…Second rule," he continued internally, stepping forward with measured pace as his reasoning sharpened. "…stop reacting to problems after they appear and start controlling what information reaches me before I act on it."

The doors opened before he reached them, the palace responding to his presence without requiring command or confirmation. Ethan did not slow, though his awareness remained sharp as he moved through the corridors with increasing focus.

The guards lowered themselves immediately as he passed, their movements precise and unquestioning as before, yet now the behavior carried additional meaning. They were not just responding to him, but to what they believed he represented.

"…That is useful," he noted internally, maintaining composure as he walked through the palace without interruption. "…if they already believe I am in control, then I only need to act like it long enough to make that belief work for me."

He changed direction without hesitation, allowing his body to guide him toward a destination he did not consciously recognize but instinctively followed. The palace responded seamlessly, doors opening and pathways clearing as if the route had already been determined.

"…Right, body memory is still functional," he thought, a faint edge of dry humor slipping through despite the situation. "…which means I will trust the body and distrust the brain, which is not a sentence I expected to think today."

The corridor narrowed slightly as he moved deeper into the palace, the architecture shifting from open grandeur into something more contained and deliberate. The air itself felt different here, quieter in a way that suggested restriction rather than emptiness.

Ethan slowed slightly, not from hesitation, but from awareness as something within his perception sharpened in response to the change. "…This place is not public," he realized, maintaining external composure as his thoughts aligned with the environment. "…which means this is either important, dangerous, or both at the same time."

A sealed chamber stood before him, its surface marked with runes that did not react immediately to his presence as other parts of the palace had done. The stillness around it felt intentional, as if access was not granted automatically even to him.

Ethan stopped.

Not abruptly.

But with controlled precision.

"…Okay, that is new," he thought carefully, gaze fixed on the chamber as the difference registered clearly. "…the palace is no longer cooperating automatically, which means this place is either restricted or protected from me specifically."

He raised his hand slowly, not out of impulse but with deliberate intent as he reached toward the sealed surface. The moment his fingers approached, the runes flickered faintly, reacting not with rejection, but with recognition that did not fully resolve.

The door did not open immediately.

It waited.

Ethan's thoughts sharpened at that, the implication forming clearly as he processed the response. "…That is not a barrier," he realized, "…that is a test, which is significantly worse because it means something expects a specific condition."

He did not push further.

Not yet.

Instead, he withdrew his hand slightly, allowing the reaction to settle as he reassessed the situation with greater precision. "…Do not trigger unknown systems blindly," he told himself firmly, maintaining composure despite the temptation to force progress.

A presence shifted behind him, subtle but deliberate, entering his awareness without sound or disruption to the environment. Ethan did not turn immediately, though the recognition came instantly.

Loki had arrived.

"Father," Loki said lightly, his voice carrying that same smooth tone that masked far more than it revealed, "you rarely visit this part of the palace without a reason, and I find myself curious about what has changed."

Ethan remained facing forward, allowing the silence to stretch as if the question required no immediate response. Internally, however, his thoughts had already begun adjusting to the new variable.

"…Of course he is here," he thought dryly, maintaining external composure despite the timing. "…because nothing in my life currently happens without at least one witness who is smarter than me."

"Curiosity," Ethan said calmly, his voice measured as he allowed just enough response to maintain control without revealing intent, "is not always a reliable guide when dealing with matters that require restraint."

Loki stepped closer, his presence light yet deliberate as he observed both Ethan and the sealed chamber without rushing to interpret the situation openly. His gaze lingered on the runes, then returned to Ethan with quiet interest.

"Restraint implies knowledge," Loki replied, tone still smooth but now carrying sharper edges beneath it, "and knowledge implies purpose, which suggests you already understand what lies beyond this door."

Ethan did not respond immediately, allowing the implication to settle without confirmation or denial as he maintained the same composed posture. Internally, however, his thoughts had already categorized the exchange.

"…He is probing again," Ethan noted, focus tightening as he analyzed the conversation. "…but this time it is not about me, it is about what I am trying to access, which means this place matters more than I thought."

"Understanding," Ethan said slowly, as if considering the word itself rather than answering directly, "is not always required to recognize that something should not be approached carelessly."

Loki's expression shifted slightly, not into doubt, but into something far more engaged as the answer provided exactly enough ambiguity to sustain his interest. The faint smile returned, though this time it carried sharper intent.

"How interesting," Loki murmured, his gaze flicking once more toward the sealed chamber before settling back on Ethan, "you speak as though you are avoiding something, rather than seeking it."

Ethan allowed the silence to return, maintaining the image of control as the tension between them settled into something far more deliberate than before. Internally, however, the situation had already clarified.

"…He is not wrong," Ethan admitted silently, the realization settling with uncomfortable accuracy. "…I do not know what is behind that door, and that is exactly why I am not opening it yet."

"Not all things require immediate action," Ethan replied calmly, his tone steady as the statement carried weight without offering explanation. "Some are better approached when the conditions are fully understood."

Loki studied him for a moment longer, then let out a quiet breath that almost resembled amusement without fully committing to it. The interest did not fade, but it shifted into something more patient.

"Very well," Loki said lightly, stepping back just enough to indicate he would not press further for now, "I will look forward to seeing when you decide those conditions have been met."

Ethan did not turn as Loki left, maintaining his focus on the sealed chamber as the presence faded from the corridor once more. The silence returned, though it no longer felt empty.

"…Alright," he thought slowly, the decision forming with clear intent as his strategy settled into place. "…if I cannot trust my memory, then I build my own system, and if I cannot trust what I know, then I control what I learn."

He lowered his hand completely, stepping back from the sealed chamber without forcing it open or triggering its conditions prematurely. The palace did not resist his decision, but neither did it assist him further.

Ethan turned and began walking away, posture composed as if the encounter had achieved exactly what he intended from the beginning. Internally, however, his final thought carried far more weight than anything he had expressed aloud.

"…I do not need to understand everything immediately," he thought, gaze steady as he moved forward through the corridor. "…I just need to make sure nothing understands me first."
