The Veil had grown heavier, darker, and almost suffocating. Shadows writhed like snakes along the cobblestone paths, shifting in ways Zara could barely comprehend. She followed Kai through a labyrinth of twisting streets and archways that seemed to exist only in this hidden world.
"Stay focused," Kai said, voice low, gold eyes scanning constantly. "The Veil responds to your emotions. Calm your mind, or it will punish you."
Zara clenched her fists, feeling the familiar pulse of shadow energy crawling beneath her skin. Every step felt like walking on living darkness.
Suddenly, shadows peeled off the walls ahead, forming into humanoid figures. Their eyes were hollow, glowing faint green, and they moved with a jerky, unnatural rhythm.
"Veil guardians," Kai said quietly. "They protect the balance here. They won't attack unless you show weakness."
Zara's heart thumped. "And if I make a mistake?"
Kai didn't answer. He only nodded toward the figures.
The guardians advanced. Their movements were silent, deliberate. Zara raised her hands, shadow tendrils swirling around her like armor. One figure lunged at her.
Instinct took over. Shadows coiled, striking and enveloping the guardian. It froze, its green glow flickering, then dissolved into black mist.
Another lunged. This time, Zara hesitated—her shadow energy wavered. The guardian's claw grazed her shoulder. Pain seared through her, but she clenched her jaw and forced her focus.
"Control it! You are the heir!" Kai shouted.
The shadows surged, obeying her will. One by one, the guardians were either struck down or bound. The last one paused, tilting its head as if assessing her strength.
Zara's breath came in sharp gasps. She stared at the mist curling from the vanquished figures. "Is… that it?" she asked.
Kai shook his head. "No. This was a test. The Veil is alive. It watches, it learns, and it whispers. And some whispers are not friendly."
A chill ran down Zara's spine. The shadows around her shivered unnaturally. A low, hissing voice curled around her mind:
"Heir… so eager… so fragile…"
Zara froze. Her chest tightened. The voice was ancient, deep, and familiar in a way that made her stomach drop.
Kai's gaze hardened. "The Night Sovereign is near. He can't manifest fully yet—but he knows you exist. Every movement you make feeds him. And he's patient… he's been waiting centuries for this moment."
Fear and adrenaline coursed through Zara's veins. She clenched her fists, letting the shadows curl around her protectively. "Then I won't make it easy for him," she whispered.
Kai's lips curved faintly. "Good. That fire will keep you alive… for now."
The shadows pulsed around her, alive, whispering secrets and warnings. Zara realized something chilling: she wasn't just training to survive the Veil—she was preparing to face a being older, darker, and more cunning than anything she had imagined.
And it was watching her.
