Chapter 2 - CHAPTER TWO: THE GIRL NO ONE NOTICED ENOUGH

---

If Adrian was the kind of person who drew attention like gravity…

Lina Hart was the kind people discovered slowly.

And sometimes—

Not at all.

She wasn't invisible.

Far from it.

People noticed her, of course. They always did. But it was the kind of noticing that came in passing—an extra glance, a quiet appreciation, a soft comment exchanged between friends.

"She's pretty."

"Yeah… but not like Vanessa."

And that was where it always ended.

"Lina, you're walking too slow again!"

The voice cut through her thoughts—bright, impatient, and unmistakably familiar.

Lina looked up immediately, her expression softening into a smile as she quickened her pace. "I'm coming, Vanessa."

Vanessa Blake stood a few steps ahead, one hand on her hip, sunlight catching effortlessly in her perfectly styled hair. Even in something as simple as the school uniform, she looked polished—like she had stepped out of a magazine instead of a classroom.

Students parted around her without even realizing it, their eyes following her with open admiration.

She didn't demand attention.

She simply existed—and it came.

She was, without question, the school's number one beauty.

And Lina?

Number two.

The title had followed her since her first year, whispered in hallways, casually mentioned in conversations, sometimes even said to her face like it was a compliment.

At first, it had stung more than she ever admitted.

Being almost something… but not quite.

Being compared constantly… but never quite winning.

Now?

Now it didn't hurt as much.

At least, that's what she told herself.

"Honestly," Vanessa said, looping her arm through Lina's as she finally caught up, "if you don't start walking faster, I'm going to start pretending I don't know you."

Lina laughed softly, the sound light and unforced. "You say that every day too."

"And I mean it every day."

"You'd miss me too much."

Vanessa shot her a quick look, lips twitching. "Don't get confident."

They walked side by side through the courtyard, their presence drawing attention in different ways.

Vanessa shone.

Lina glowed.

It was subtle, but noticeable—at least to those who paid attention long enough to see it.

Where Vanessa's beauty demanded admiration, Lina's invited curiosity.

Where Vanessa's confidence filled the space around her, Lina's calmness softened it.

"You didn't answer my question," Vanessa said after a moment, glancing sideways. "Are you coming to the farewell party tonight?"

Lina hesitated slightly, her steps slowing just a fraction. "I don't know…"

Vanessa's grip on her arm tightened instinctively.

"I might just go home," Lina finished quietly.

Vanessa stopped walking.

Completely.

"Lina."

"That tone means I'm in trouble," Lina said, already smiling in anticipation.

"It means you're not escaping this," Vanessa corrected, turning fully to face her. "It's the biggest party of the term. Everyone will be there."

"I know, but—"

"And," Vanessa leaned closer, lowering her voice dramatically as if sharing a secret meant only for the two of them, "Adrian Cole will be there."

Lina blinked.

Once.

Then again.

"…Why does that matter?"

Vanessa stared at her.

Actually stared.

Like Lina had just broken some unspoken rule of reality.

"Because he's Adrian Cole."

"That doesn't explain anything."

"It explains everything."

Lina shook her head, a small smile tugging at her lips. "You're unbelievable."

"And you're impossible," Vanessa shot back immediately. "How are you not even a little curious?"

Lina opened her mouth, ready to respond—

To say something simple.

Something dismissive.

Something safe.

And then—

She walked straight into someone.

The impact was sudden, solid, and completely unexpected.

Her breath caught in her throat as she stumbled slightly, her books slipping from her arms and scattering across the polished floor with a series of soft thuds.

"Oh—! I'm so sorry!" she said quickly, dropping to her knees without hesitation.

Her fingers moved quickly, a little clumsily, as she reached for her books. Her heart was already racing—not just from the collision, but from the sudden attention it had drawn.

Great, she thought. Perfect timing.

Before she could gather everything—

Another hand entered her view.

Calm.

Steady.

Unhurried.

It picked up one of her books with effortless ease, as if the situation didn't bother its owner at all.

Lina froze.

Something about that hand—

Something about the presence attached to it—

Made her heartbeat stutter.

Slowly, almost cautiously, she lifted her gaze.

And time… seemed to slow.

Adrian Cole stood in front of her.

Up close—

He was different.

More real.

More overwhelming.

It wasn't just his appearance, though that alone was enough to make most people lose their composure. It was the way he carried himself—the quiet confidence, the stillness in his posture, the way his gaze seemed to focus without rushing.

He wasn't smiling.

He wasn't frowning.

He was simply… looking at her.

Observing.

Like he was trying to understand something he hadn't expected to see.

"You should watch where you're going," he said.

His tone wasn't harsh.

But it wasn't soft either.

Just… neutral.

Unbothered.

Lina swallowed, suddenly aware of how close he was, how easily he filled the space around her.

"I—I will," she replied, her voice quieter than usual.

He extended the book toward her.

She reached for it.

Their fingers brushed.

It lasted less than a second.

Barely anything at all.

But—

It didn't feel like nothing.

A strange, unfamiliar warmth flickered through her chest, catching her completely off guard.

Adrian paused.

Just slightly.

So subtle it could have been imagined.

But it wasn't.

His eyes flickered—not away, but deeper.

Noticing.

There was no nervous excitement in her gaze.

No attempt to impress him.

No expectation.

Just quiet surprise.

And something else—

Something genuine.

He straightened slowly.

As if resetting the moment.

Then he stepped back.

Creating distance.

Without another word, he turned and walked away, his presence fading into the flow of the hallway as effortlessly as it had appeared.

Lina remained where she was for a second longer than necessary.

Still.

Processing.

"Lina!"

Vanessa's voice snapped her back to reality as she rushed forward, crouching beside her. "Are you okay?!"

Lina blinked, her thoughts still catching up with her. "I… I think so."

Vanessa turned immediately, her eyes locking onto Adrian's retreating figure. "That was him," she whispered, like she couldn't quite believe it. "That was literally him."

"I know," Lina said softly.

"And he helped you."

"…Yes."

Vanessa grabbed her shoulders dramatically, shaking her just enough to emphasize the moment. "This is not normal."

Lina let out a small, slightly breathless laugh.

"I guess it's not," she admitted.

But as she looked down at the book still in her hands—

The one he had picked up.

The one he had handed back to her—

Her fingers tightened around it unconsciously.

Her heartbeat still hadn't settled.

Not completely.

Not yet.

And for reasons she didn't fully understand…

She had a feeling—

That moment wasn't as small as it seemed.
