Chapter 7 - CHOSEN PAIRS

The announcement came in the morning, displayed boldly on the classroom screen:

"Next challenge: Duo Assignment. Students will be paired randomly. Cooperation, efficiency, and strategy will determine your results. Points will be awarded individually based on your performance and your ability to work with your partner. Choose wisely. Adapt quickly."

A nervous buzz filled Class 1-F. This wasn't a normal assignment — being forced to cooperate with someone you barely knew, or someone you didn't trust, made every student uneasy.

Kaito Maikeru walked in casually, hands in his pockets, observing the room. Students fidgeted as pairs were assigned by the digital system. The screen flickered with names and matching numbers:

Each student's partner was displayed, and murmurs immediately began.

Some were delighted to be paired with strong performers.

Others were mortified at being paired with students they considered weak, unpredictable, or annoying.

When the screen settled, the first pairings were clear. Kaito's name appeared beside a timid but clever student, Akihiko Hoshino. He smiled faintly, calm as ever. Interesting. Observation will be key here.

Sayaka's name appeared next to a boastful, overconfident girl named Reina Fujimoto. Sayaka didn't flinch. Parasite. Let's see how useful she is.

The classroom buzzed with whispered complaints and nervous laughter as other pairs tried to adjust to their partners. Some argued immediately, others stayed silent in tension.

The challenge itself was simple in description but layered in execution:

1. Each duo would navigate a complex puzzle course with mental and physical tasks.

2. Clues were scattered across the classroom, some hidden in plain sight, some requiring cooperation.

3. Points would be tallied individually and based on how well the pair complemented each other.

The moment the challenge began, chaos erupted:

Some duos fell apart immediately, bickering or failing to communicate.

Some weak students froze under pressure, leaving stronger partners frustrated.

Kaito quietly guided Akihiko, giving subtle suggestions, anticipating obstacles, and letting the timid student appear as if he were contributing equally. Efficiency was maintained without revealing Kaito's true level.

Meanwhile, Sayaka moved with cold precision. Reina tried to take control, bossing her around, but Sayaka ignored the theatrics, calmly solving puzzles herself while Reina's confidence crumbled. Sayaka completed tasks almost effortlessly, letting Reina's ego collapse as she followed silently.

Other duos struggled. Some cheated, some argued, and some failed to complete even half the tasks in time.

When the points were revealed, the results were telling:

Sayaka Mizuno & Reina Fujimoto – 160 points (Sayaka carried most of the work, Reina's performance negligible)

Kaito Maikeru & Akihiko Hoshino – 145 points (smooth coordination, subtle manipulation, brilliant observation)

Other duos – 50–90 points

The room erupted in murmurs, accusations, and disbelief. Some students whispered, How are they so far ahead? Others muttered, This isn't fair.

Kaito leaned back, calm, cataloging reactions. He didn't care about recognition — only the data. Every sigh, every flinch, every glance told him more about the people in 1-F than any test ever could.

Sayaka, as always, packed her notebook silently. Reina, visibly frustrated and embarrassed, muttered, She did all the work… why me? Sayaka glanced at her briefly. Parasite, she thought. But necessary this time.

By the end of the day, the duos had revealed much more than skill:

Who was capable under pressure.

Who relied on others.

Who could be manipulated, ignored, or exploited.

And most importantly, Kaito and Sayaka had once again emerged as forces apart from the rest — silent, calculating, untouchable.

The veil is lifting, Kaito thought, and soon, everyone will realize that the real game isn't the challenge… it's what they reveal about themselves while playing it.
