Chapter 14 - Trial by Darkness

The void outside shimmered with malevolent intent, black energy twisting like coils around the ship. Every panel, every sensor, pulsed in rhythm with the entity behind the signal, as if it knew their every thought.

Kael Orion's jaw tightened. "This isn't just a test anymore—it's a trial. Every system, every warning, every prediction… it's pushing us to the edge."

Lyra's hands trembled over the controls, though she fought to mask it. "It's like it wants us to fail. To make one mistake… and we pay."

Mara's voice was tense. "It's predicting our fears, our limits… and manipulating the outcome. I can feel it—like it's inside my head."

Eli's face was pale, tight with focus, but Kael caught the momentary flicker of doubt in his eyes. The signal had begun attacking morale, courage, and trust, feeding off every hesitation.

The first warning appeared on the monitor, glowing red:"Event: Choice of Survival – Predicted Outcome: One Fatality if indecision occurs."

Kael's pulse raced. "It's forcing a decision. A real one this time. Someone has to act… or someone dies."

Outside, the void pulsed, black waves lashing at the hull. The ship shook violently. Lyra's voice came, steady but urgent: "Kael… the energy core needs manual stabilization—or it will breach!"

Kael glanced at Mara, then Eli. "Who's going?"

Lyra's hand went up instinctively. "I've handled the external repairs before. I'll do it."

Kael's heart clenched. "It's too dangerous. The signal knows exactly what we're capable of—it's predicting you might not make it back."

Lyra's gaze was fierce. "Then I have to try. Someone has to. We survive as a team—or we don't survive at all."

The airlock hissed as she suited up, tethered carefully. Kael watched, every muscle in his body tense. Mara and Eli monitored her movements, eyes wide, breaths shallow.

As Lyra floated outside, black energy surged unpredictably, lashing at her with invisible force. Sparks flew from the hull. Kael's chest tightened. The signal isn't just testing skill—it's testing courage and will.

Seconds stretched like eternity. The energy core throbbed, unstable, threatening to explode. Lyra's magnetic boots clung to the hull as she manually adjusted the panel. Sparks danced around her, some brushing dangerously close.

Then came the pulse—a concentrated surge of energy from the void. Lyra stumbled, tether straining. Kael shouted over the alarms: "Hold on! You can do this!"

With every ounce of strength and focus, Lyra forced the panel into position. The core stabilized, the ship trembled, then hummed steadily. The black waves outside receded slightly, almost as if acknowledging her victory.

She floated back toward the airlock, face pale, body trembling, but alive. Kael exhaled shakily. They had survived… but the cost was clear: the signal had calculated every risk, every fear, and pushed them to the brink.

Mara's voice was quiet. "It's learning faster. Every test, every trial—it's adapting."

Kael's gaze returned to the pulsing waveform. The signal isn't just a prediction. It's a sentient force, an examiner, a predator… and it's not done with us yet.

The void shimmered ominously outside. One thing was certain: whatever came next, they would have no choice but to face it head-on.
