Chapter 5 - CHAPTER FOUR - THE LIFE OF JOSH

In a remote corner of Uvsberk, the Ariano family makes their home. They are the kind of family that, despite life's hardships, refuses to give up—even when weighed down by troubles, their faces never lose their warmth or smiles. For them, as long as they stand together, joy will always find a way.

But fate, it seemed, had other plans. Without warning, they lost their only source of income—the single thread holding their daily survival together.

The struggles that followed were relentless: debts piled high, hunger gnawed at their bellies, and every day brought new financial worries. Depression settled over the household, leaving the older family members overwhelmed and heartsick.

No one felt the burden more deeply than Josh. A kind-hearted boy with a sharp mind for learning, he made the painful decision to leave school and find work to support his loved ones. His parents pleaded with him to stay in his studies, but his resolve was unshakable—and with no other way to ease their suffering, they had no choice but to let him go.

Josh first tried to find work as a tutor, but was turned away because he had not completed his education. He then applied for a position at a local fast-food chain, only to be rejected for the same reason. Faced with closed doors at every turn, desperation led him down a path he never imagined he would take: he resolved to rob a bank in their town. He knew it was wrong—he had been raised to value honesty above all else—but the thought of watching his family suffer pushed him to act, even if it meant risking everything he held dear.

He planned the heist with painstaking care, studying every detail of the bank's layout and security protocols. He discovered that security was thinnest on Saturdays, and chose that day to carry out his plan.

When the morning of the robbery arrived, Josh felt both a strange sense of purpose and a creeping dread—he knew that no matter what happened, he would regret this moment for the rest of his life. He made his way to the bank, his steps steady despite the turmoil in his heart.

As he had suspected, only a handful of guards were on duty, and security measures were lax. He slipped inside silently, his footsteps so light they barely made a sound.

Once inside, he put his plan into motion. He pulled out his gun and pressed it against a teller's side, keeping his movements hidden from the guards. What he did not know was that another teller had spotted him and quietly pressed the emergency alarm.

"Give me the money I ask for, or I'll pull the trigger," he whispered, his voice tight with tension. The teller trembled violently, tears welling in their eyes.

"One million pesos—hurry," he said, his voice barely audible. The teller wasted no time, filling a bag with the requested amount and handing it over.

Josh turned and walked calmly toward the exit, the heavy bag of cash in his hands. But as he pushed open the door, he was met by a wall of police officers—they had been waiting for him all along. With no way out, he surrendered without a fight.

Days passed, and when Josh did not return home, his family grew frantic with worry. They went to the police to report him missing, only to learn the devastating truth about what he had done.

When they visited him in his cell, they found him huddled in a corner, his eyes empty and distant. The sight of him shattered their hearts, and tears streamed down their faces as they held each other. It was then that they learned his motive: he had acted not for himself, but to lift the burden from their shoulders, willing to sacrifice his freedom to spare them further pain.

Months later, Josh was released. Standing before his family, he made a solemn promise—to himself, to his loved ones, and to the world—that he would never again let desperation lead him astray, and would build a better life through hard work and integrity.
