Chapter 1: The Iceberg and the Idiot

Word Count: ~1,200 (Excerpt Style)

The Southern Ocean was a cold, miserable place, but Silver was currently having the time of his life. Why? Because Sokka had managed to get his tongue stuck to a frozen piece of whale-blubber on a dare.

"I told you," Silver said, leaning back in the canoe with his hands behind his head, his Aero-Bo staff resting across his lap. "I said, 'Sokka, that blubber is at sub-zero temperatures.' And what did you do?"

"Mmph-fhh-mmph!" Sokka argued, his tongue firmly bonded to the frozen snack.

"Exactly. You said 'I'm a warrior, Silver, I fear no fat.'" Silver chuckled, his eyes bright with mischief. He reached out, and with a tiny flick of his fingers, he used a bit of Firebending internal heat to warm the air around Sokka's mouth. The ice hissed, and Sokka pulled away with a wet pop.

"My dignity is wounded," Sokka gasped, rubbing his jaw.

"Your dignity died when we were five and you tried to fight that polar-leopard seal with a dried fish," Silver reminded him.

"Silver! Sokka! Look!" Katara shouted, pointing ahead.

The water began to churn, and Silver's humor vanished in an instant, replaced by the sharp, honed instinct of the Adaptive Learner. He felt it—a massive surge of Energy from below. It wasn't just water moving; it was the world shifting.

"Sokka, grab the oars. Katara, get behind me," Silver commanded. The teasing big brother was gone, replaced by the warrior who had spent twelve years secretly mastering the elements.

A massive dome of glowing blue ice erupted from the sea, nearly flipping their boat. As the mist cleared, they saw a boy with glowing tattoos frozen deep inside.

"Is he... alive?" Katara whispered.

Silver stood up, his staff clicking as it expanded into its full length. He felt his 3-year cooldown pulse. He could copy the boy's Airbending right now. But something stopped him. He saw the way the air shimmered around the ice.

"He's not just alive, Katara," Silver said, a smirk returning to his face as he looked at the massive beam of light shooting into the sky. "He's going to be a giant pain in the neck for the Fire Nation. And probably for me, because now I have three kids to babysit."

He jumped onto the ice, his movements fluid and weightless—a result of his Osmosis wish drawing strength from the very ocean around them.

"Hey, kid!" Silver shouted, rapping his steel staff against the iceberg. "Wake up! You're missing a great sunset, and my brother is about to try and eat your house!"

"I am not!" Sokka yelled from the boat.

The ice cracked. A burst of wind sent Sokka tumbling backward into the canoe, but Silver didn't move an inch. He planted his staff, the metal humming as it absorbed the shock of the air-blast.

As Aang tumbled out into Katara's arms, Silver looked up at the sky. He could see the dark smoke of a Fire Nation ship on the horizon.

"Well," Silver muttered, spinning his staff and collapsing it back into its compact form. "Guess I'm not retiring this year."

(Silver, Sokka, and Katara have just brought Aang back to the village. The tension is high, but Silver is more concerned with the quality of the snacks.)

Silver sat on a crate of dried sea-prunes, twirling his collapsed staff like a drumstick. Around him, the village was buzzing. People were staring at Aang like he was a ghost, and Sokka was currently poking Appa with a spear, trying to figure out which end was the front.

"I'm telling you, Katara, he's a Fire Nation spy!" Sokka hissed, pointing his spear at the 12-year-old boy currently sneezing and flying ten feet into the air.

"Sokka, he's a twelve-year-old in a bright orange jumpsuit," Silver interjected, popping a sea-prune into his mouth and immediately regretting it. Ugh, I need to use my 'Panel' to wish for a Master Chef next time. "Unless the Fire Nation has started recruiting from the 'Adorably Bald' division, I think we're safe."

"He has tattoos, Silver! Tattoos are for... tough people! Like warriors! Or people who know things!" Sokka gestured wildly.

Silver stood up, towering over his younger brother. He clapped a hand on Sokka's shoulder, subtly pulsing a bit of Vitality Energy into him. Sokka's frantic posture immediately slumped into a relaxed state, his eyes glazing over slightly.

"Feel that? That's called 'calming down,' little brother," Silver grinned. "Besides, if he tries anything, I'll just sit on him. He weighs about as much as a wet penguin-seal."

"I heard that!" Aang chirped, landing softly next to them. He looked at Silver, his gray eyes wide with curiosity. "You have weird energy. It's like... you're a campfire, but also a waterfall. Are you a bender?"

The village went silent. Katara froze, her eyes darting to Silver. Silver didn't miss a beat. He let out a loud, booming laugh and leaned on his staff.

"Me? Nah, kid. I'm just the guy who makes sure Sokka doesn't accidentally spear himself in the foot," Silver lied smoothly. Through his Accelerated Learning, he had mastered the art of "Bender Poker-Face" years ago. "I just have a very... vibrant personality. It's a gift."

Later that night, Silver stood on the edge of the village, looking at the black horizon. He felt the cold air, but Osmosis kept his blood warm. He pulled out his staff, clicking it into its spear-head form. He practiced a few strikes, the metal whistling through the air.

He moved like water, but his footing was solid as earth.

Three years, he thought. The cooldown is done. I could take his Airbending. But he needs it more than I do right now. I'll hold the charge. I have a feeling a certain angry prince is coming to visit tomorrow, and I'm going to need a surprise up my sleeve.

"Silver?"

He spun, collapsing the staff in a blur of motion. Katara was standing there, wrapped in her parka.

"You were doing it again," she whispered. "The moving... it looked like the scrolls. But faster."

Silver smiled, the "fun big brother" mask slipping back into place. "Just making sure I don't get rusty, Kat. Someone has to protect the village while Sokka is busy 'interrogating' the sky-bison."

"You're going to tell them eventually, right?" she asked. "That you're... everything?"

Silver looked at his hands. "When the time is right, Katara. But for now? I think the world needs an Avatar. I'm just the guy making sure the Avatar doesn't get his head handed to him."
