Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2 — Awakening of the Devourer

CHAPTER 2 — Awakening of the Devourer

The lower quarters of Noctra Academy were a prison masquerading as a dormitory.

Cold stone walls pressed in from all sides. Shadows pooled in corners, flickering with the light of dim lanterns. The air smelled faintly of mildew and magic—a scent that made Aria's stomach twist. She had been shoved here with other "first-years," all of them staring at her with a mix of disdain and curiosity.

She lowered herself onto the rough wooden cot, her wrists still aching from the enchanted cuffs that had restrained her earlier. Outside, distant laughter, shouts, and the clinking of weapons echoed through the halls.

Every sound reminded her: this was no ordinary academy. This was a battlefield.

She swallowed hard and pressed her back against the wall. She had no magic, no protection, no allies. Only the faint, almost imperceptible hum inside her—a presence she hadn't understood yet.

Minutes passed. Hours, maybe. The other first-years whispered among themselves.

"That girl… she's a commoner."

"No aura. Absolute nothing."

"She won't last a day."

Aria's pulse tightened. She knew they were right… in the world's eyes. She was useless. Useless and powerless.

And yet… the hum grew louder.

Not magic. Not the familiar spark she had seen in the other students. Something else. Something alive.

Her fingers tingled. Her skin crawled. And for the first time in her life, she felt… hungry.

Hungry for strength. Hungry for power. Hungry for survival.

The night dragged on. When silence finally settled over the quarters, Aria couldn't sleep. Her eyes traced the shadows, watching them stretch and twist. Then—

Movement.

Not in the shadows, but in her mind.

A voice. Soft. Hungry. Malevolent, yet oddly… familiar.

"I am yours. Feed. Grow."

Aria froze. She had never heard anything like it. A voice inside her head, yet not her own thoughts.

"What… what is this?" she whispered, fear mingling with curiosity.

"Do not fear. You have nothing. You can take everything."

The words were not just words—they were a command, an awakening.

Her heart pounded. She didn't understand. She couldn't understand. She had never had magic. She was nothing. And yet…

Something surged inside her. A heat that started in her chest and spread outward, prickling under her skin, deep into her bones.

Outside, the Academy was alive.

Torches burned violet. Mist swirled around spires. The night wind carried faint screams and laughter—students testing their powers, showing off, or… hunting.

Aria pressed herself against the wall, breathing shallow. She had to hide. She had to survive.

And then—she heard it.

A scream. Not a student. Something different. Dark, guttural, horrifying.

Instinct, sharpened by terror, propelled her from the cot. She ran toward the sound, through empty corridors, guided by the pull inside her chest. The hum grew stronger. Stronger.

When she turned a corner, she saw it.

A creature. Its skin was dark, almost shadow-like, its limbs twisted unnaturally. Its eyes glowed faint red in the darkness. It was attacking a first-year student, ripping through defenses like paper.

Everyone else had run. All the noble students with magic, their spells fizzled against the thing. It was impossible.

Her chest tightened. Her pulse raced.

And then… the hunger surged.

She stepped forward.

No magic. No skills. Only the hum. The pull.

"Stop!" she screamed, voice echoing in the corridor.

The creature turned its gaze to her, red eyes glinting with predatory intelligence. It lunged.

Instinctively, she reacted.

The hum inside her exploded. It wrapped around her, coiling through her veins. Her hands glowed faintly, shadows and light intertwining. Her fingers brushed the creature… and everything changed.

It screamed—a sound that cut through her ears—but she felt no fear. Only power.

She consumed.

The creature's essence, its strength, its magic… flowed into her like fire. Its life, its being, dissolved into nothing, absorbed. And she grew stronger.

When the last vestige disappeared, Aria stumbled back, panting. Her hands shook, but the glow lingered faintly.

She was trembling. Alive. More than alive.

Her first taste of power.

Morning came.

The lower quarters were abuzz. Whispers had already spread:

"That girl… the shadow one…"

"She killed it?"

"She absorbed it… its magic… it's impossible!"

Aria didn't speak. She didn't move. She only felt it: the hum, the hunger, the awareness that she was no longer nothing.

Something inside her whispered: "This is only the beginning."

And she knew it was true.

Because if she could take the strength of one monster… what else could she devour?

Classes began the next day. The professors were ruthless. The students cruel. Every test, every exercise, every sparring session was a battle for survival.

Aria struggled. Her magic was absent. Her body was weak. And yet… the hum pulsed in her veins. Every time someone underestimated her, it surged, pushing her to extremes she had never known.

First challenge: combat training.

The instructor sneered at her. "No magic. Useless. You will fail."

Aria's heart hammered. She knew he was right… by normal rules. But she had a different rule now. A secret weapon.

When the opponent lunged, she let the hum guide her. Shadow and force surged through her, instincts sharpened. The first strike she received… she absorbed. The second… the same.

By the end of the session, the students stared. Shock, fear, and awe mingled on their faces.

A whisper reached her ears:

"Impossible… how does she survive?"

Aria only smiled faintly. Inside, the hum chuckled. Hungry. Approving. Dangerous.

By nightfall, she was alone in the courtyard again, under violet-tinted moonlight.

Her body ached. Her mind raced. But the hunger… the hunger was stronger than pain.

She touched her hands, feeling the lingering residue of the creature she had devoured. The whispers in her head had grown louder. Feed. Devour. Grow.

Her pulse quickened. She could feel the potential. Endless. Infinite. Untouchable.

And then, a shadow moved across the courtyard.

Lucien Blackwood.

He stepped from the shadows, silver eyes piercing her.

"You survived," he said, voice low, dangerous.

"Yes," she whispered, barely meeting his gaze.

His smirk was faint, approving. "Interesting. Very interesting. Perhaps you're more than worthless after all."

Aria's heart raced. Danger. Desire. Challenge. He was the first one who didn't dismiss her. The first one who saw… something.

And she knew: the game had begun.

The Academy wasn't just a school. It was a hunting ground.

And she wasn't prey anymore.

She was the predator.

That night, alone in her quarters, Aria stared at the shadows along the walls.

She remembered her father, her stepmother, the whispered disdain of every noble she had ever known.

Worthless.

No. She would never be that again.

The hum pulsed stronger than ever. Her body quivered. And somewhere deep inside, something awakened fully.

A power that could devour anything. A power that would rewrite fate.

A smile curved her lips.

"They called me worthless…" she whispered to the darkness. "Now watch me take everything."

And in the shadows, the hum laughed. Hungry. Approving. Ready.

The world of Noctra Academy, the nobles, the kingdoms… none of it would survive what was coming.

Because Aira Valen was no longer human.

She was a monster.

And she was awake.
