Chapter 26 - The Rising Potential Between The Gap Of Experience

The bottom lane had changed completely.

Ruko was dead, and Sukachi had fallen with him. What should have been a simple two-on-one gank had instead turned into an exchange that left Ishika High without its captain while Seishin Academy lost the player who had been holding the lane together. Inori, however, had immediately converted the chaos into another advantage by eliminating Ruko before he could retreat, leaving the bottom lane temporarily open.

That was where Risa found herself.

She arrived just in time to prevent Inori from freely advancing on the outer tower. Melodious stepped into the lane, her weapon held at the ready as the remaining warriors clashed around her. Across the battlefield, Yamashiki stood at a comfortable distance, the faint glow of her weapon reflecting across the virtual terrain.

For several seconds, neither player made a move.

The audience continued to roar around them, but the noise seemed strangely distant from the two competitors. Their attention had narrowed entirely to the space separating them.

Risa slowly adjusted her glasses.

Her expression remained as composed as ever, but behind those lenses, her eyes were already working.

Distance.

Cooldowns.

Position.

Previous attacks.

Inori's habits.

She had been watching everything.

Across from her, Inori was doing the same.

She had already fought Hikari, Kana, and Ruko. Each opponent had approached her differently, and each had revealed something about Seishin Academy's current level. Hikari possessed mechanical ability but was too predictable when pressured. Kana could create tremendous pressure when allowed to attack freely, but her aggression could be turned against her. Ruko was different entirely, possessing the experience and instincts of someone who had once competed at the highest level.

And now there was Risa.

Inori studied Melodious carefully.

Risa was inexperienced. That much was obvious.

Her movements did not possess the effortless rhythm of someone who had spent years playing against elite opponents. There were moments when her positioning was slightly awkward, and there was still a small hesitation between certain decisions as she processed what was happening.

Yet those imperfections did not tell the entire story.

There was something else.

Risa learned.

Fast.

Inori had encountered talented players before. She had fought people with extraordinary mechanical skill, players capable of executing difficult combinations after seeing them only once or twice. Natural talent was common at high levels of Nervanox.

What made Risa unusual was not simply how quickly she could perform an action.

It was how quickly she changed her behavior after something went wrong.

Every exchange taught her something.

Every attack altered the way she approached the next one.

Every mistake became information.

Inori's lips curved upward.

"...Let's see how much you've learned."

Risa did not answer.

Melodious raised her weapon, and a soft pulse of musical energy began gathering around her. The glow intensified for a moment before Risa released the attack.

A wave of magical energy shot across the lane.

Inori immediately moved.

Yamashiki shifted sideways with precise timing, allowing the projectile to pass harmlessly beside her. Before Risa could capitalize on the dodge, Yamashiki retaliated with a quick shot of her own.

Risa moved backward.

The attack passed through the space where Melodious had been standing.

Another shot followed almost immediately.

Risa avoided that one as well, but Inori did not allow the exchange to settle. Yamashiki's weapon changed in her hands, transforming into the long-range configuration Risa had already seen several times.

Beta.

The sniper.

Risa's eyes narrowed.

She understood immediately what Inori was trying to do.

Create distance.

The moment Beta appeared, Risa moved forward.

Inori fired.

Risa dashed backward instead, allowing the shot to pass just in front of Melodious before continuing through the lane.

Another shot came.

Risa shifted again.

She could not afford to remain at the sniper's preferred range. Yamashiki's greatest advantage with Beta was the ability to dictate the distance of the engagement, forcing her opponent to spend more time approaching than attacking.

Risa understood the problem.

She needed to get closer.

Inori understood that too.

The battle quickly became a contest of positioning.

Risa advanced whenever she found an opportunity, forcing Inori to retreat. Inori responded by firing whenever Risa moved into a predictable path, forcing her to change direction. Neither player was committing to a full exchange yet. They were testing one another, searching for the smallest mistake.

Risa's eyes tracked Yamashiki's movements.

She's controlling the distance.

Another shot passed beside Melodious.

She wants me to approach from the same angle.

Risa changed direction.

Inori adjusted.

Risa attacked.

Inori dodged.

Yamashiki fired.

Melodious slipped away.

The two continued moving through the lane, their positions constantly changing as the distance between them expanded and contracted.

Then, suddenly, Inori stopped attacking.

The pressure disappeared.

Risa noticed immediately.

Her fingers paused for the briefest moment.

Why?

Inori had been maintaining constant pressure only seconds ago. Now Yamashiki stood still, her sniper lowered as though Inori had simply decided to stop fighting.

Risa's eyes narrowed.

Something was wrong.

She considered the possibilities.

Cooldowns?

Perhaps Beta's skills had been exhausted.

Perhaps Inori needed a moment to recover her abilities.

Perhaps she had finally created an opening.

Risa looked at the distance between them.

Her previous attacks had forced Inori to reposition several times. If Beta's important abilities were unavailable, this might be the moment to close the gap.

Risa made her decision.

Melodious surged forward.

A flash of light erupted beneath her feet as she activated her dash, sending her rapidly across the lane.

The distance disappeared.

Inori watched her approach.

And smiled.

"Nice try."

Risa's eyes sharpened.

Inori's expression remained completely relaxed.

"You have potential..."

Melodious continued forward.

"...but you're nowhere close to me."

The audience reacted immediately.

A murmur spread through the venue as everyone realized what was happening. Risa had committed to the engagement, and Inori was waiting for her to reach the exact distance she wanted.

Risa did not know it yet, but she had stepped directly into the trap.

The moment Inori stopped applying pressure, she had already predicted what Risa would do.

Risa had learned one important thing from their previous exchanges: Inori's greatest advantage was her ability to control distance. A player who understood that would naturally look for an opportunity to close the gap whenever Inori stopped attacking.

That was precisely why Inori had stopped.

She wanted Risa to think there was an opening.

She wanted her to believe that Beta's abilities were unavailable.

Most importantly, she wanted Risa to become aggressive.

And it had worked.

Risa was coming directly toward her.

Exactly as Inori intended.

Inori's smile widened slightly.

"...That's right."

There was one detail Risa had overlooked.

Yamashiki's weapons did not share a single universal cooldown.

Inori had been using Beta.

But Beta was only one part of Yamashiki's arsenal.

The other weapons remained available.

The sniper disappeared from Yamashiki's hands.

For an instant, Risa's eyes widened.

A different weapon appeared.

A massive close-range firearm.

The shotgun.

"...!"

Risa realized the trap.

Too late.

She had already committed to her dash, and Melodious was now inside the range where Yamashiki's close-combat weapon became most dangerous.

Inori had not been retreating because she was losing control.

She had been preparing for this exact moment.

Yamashiki raised the shotgun.

The weapon began charging.

Risa attempted to change direction, but Melodious's movement had already carried her too far forward.

There was no room.

No time.

Inori pulled the trigger.

BOOM!

The blast erupted across the lane.

The concentrated attack struck Melodious directly, and her health bar vanished almost instantly.

The screen flashed.

Risa has been slain.

For a moment, the venue fell strangely quiet.

Then the crowd exploded.

"ANOTHER KILL!"

"INORI!"

"SHE READ HER!"

"THAT WAS A BAIT!"

Risa remained motionless in her chair.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the screen.

She replayed the exchange in her head.

The moment Inori stopped attacking.

The sudden opening.

Her decision to dash forward.

The weapon change.

The shotgun.

The final blast.

She had calculated the possibility of Inori attacking.

She had calculated the possibility that the sniper was still available.

But she had failed to calculate something more fundamental.

Inori had intentionally stopped pressuring her.

The entire sequence had been built around one assumption: that Inori's pressure had disappeared because she had temporarily lost the ability to continue it.

That assumption had been wrong.

Risa slowly leaned back.

"...I miscalculated."

The words were quiet.

For someone like Risa, that admission carried more weight than the audience could possibly understand.

She was accustomed to calculations producing answers.

If something went wrong, there was normally a variable she had missed, a number she had failed to account for, or information she had not possessed.

But this time, the problem was not the calculation.

It was the person behind it.

Inori had deliberately created the information Risa used to reach her conclusion.

She had manipulated the premise itself.

Across the battlefield, Yamashiki stood over the fallen Melodious.

Inori did not celebrate.

She simply watched the defeated opponent for a moment, her expression carrying something closer to interest than triumph.

"She's got potential."

Her eyes remained fixed on the screen.

"But she still lacks experience."

Yamashiki turned toward the lane as Inori's expression softened into a faint smile.

"...They're going to be strong in the future."

The crowd erupted again.

Inori had done it.

Hikari.

Kana.

Ruko.

And now Risa.

One after another, Seishin Academy's players had fallen to the same opponent.

The scoreboard made the difference impossible to ignore.

Inori's kill count had become the highest in the match, and more importantly, every elimination had come from a different kind of advantage. She had punished Hikari's positioning, dismantled Kana's aggressive engage, exploited the opening against Ruko, and now baited Risa into committing at exactly the wrong moment.

She wasn't merely winning fights.

She was controlling the battlefield.

Every time Seishin Academy attempted to create an opening, Inori seemed to find a way to turn that opening against them.

The spectators could feel the difference.

This was not simply a matter of mechanical skill.

Inori understood timing.

She understood spacing.

She understood cooldown management.

She understood baiting and prediction.

But perhaps most importantly, she understood the players standing in front of her.

She wasn't merely fighting their characters.

She was fighting their decisions.

And right now, she was several steps ahead.

Yet the match was far from over.

Several seconds later, two icons appeared on the respawn indicators.

Hikari had returned.

So had Ruko.

The moment Ruko's character materialized inside Seishin Academy's base, he began moving.

There was no hesitation.

He pushed forward immediately, guiding Estan through the familiar paths leading back toward the battlefield. His expression remained serious as the previous exchange replayed itself in his mind.

He had survived Sukachi's ambush.

He had instinctively avoided the captain's attack and turned the situation around beneath the tower.

Then Inori had killed him.

Not because she had panicked.

Not because she had been distracted.

She had simply waited for the exact moment when his attention was occupied by Sukachi.

And now Risa had fallen as well.

Ruko glanced toward the bottom lane.

"...Inori."

The name escaped him quietly.

He knew what awaited him.

The next encounter would not be the same as the previous ones.

He had already experienced her pressure firsthand. He had seen how quickly she adapted when his attacks stopped following the patterns she expected. More importantly, he had now watched her dismantle three of his teammates.

He couldn't approach her the same way anymore.

Ruko's grip tightened around the controls.

His eyes sharpened.

"Round three."

Estan continued toward the battlefield.

Ruko stared ahead.

"I'm coming."

Far away from the noise of the stage, the spectators' lobby overlooked the main arena through a large glass viewing area.

The enormous display screens mounted around the room showed the ongoing match from several different angles. Even with the glass separating the lobby from the stadium, the roar of the audience could still be heard whenever another elimination appeared on the screen.

Two figures stood near the viewing area.

Principal Rikka of Seishin Academy watched with her arms folded.

Beside her stood Principal Rusto, the head of Ishika High.

Neither had spoken during the exchange between Risa and Inori.

Only after Risa's defeat did Rusto finally break the silence.

"...I'm impressed."

Rikka turned her attention toward him.

Rusto continued watching the screen.

"Your daughter isn't only gifted academically."

He gestured toward the battlefield.

"She actually managed to stand against someone like Inori."

Rikka said nothing.

Rusto's expression remained thoughtful.

"Someone who has competed on the world stage."

The replay showed Risa dodging several of Inori's attacks before being caught by the bait.

"Most students would have been overwhelmed simply by the pressure of fighting someone with that level of experience."

He paused.

"Your daughter lost that exchange, but she forced Inori to change how she approached the fight."

Rikka's gaze remained fixed on the screen.

Rusto smiled.

"Principal Rikka, your school's Gaming Club may have a bright future ahead of them."

A faint smile appeared on Rikka's lips.

"That's obvious."

Rusto glanced toward her.

"You agree?"

"Of course."

Rikka's voice was calm and confident.

"It is becoming increasingly obvious that their previous losses were caused by inexperience."

She watched the players on the screen.

"Their mechanical ability is not the primary problem."

Rusto nodded.

"They simply haven't learned how to apply it properly yet."

Rikka's expression remained composed.

Then her smile sharpened slightly.

"Save your flattery, Principal Rusto."

Her eyes never left the match.

"We both know losses don't bring in the numbers."

Rusto's smile faded.

He understood exactly what she meant.

Potential was not enough.

A school gaming club required funding. Computers had to be maintained. Equipment had to be replaced. Tournament participation required transportation, registration, and other expenses. Even a club filled with talented students could not survive indefinitely if its results failed to justify those costs.

For a principal, enthusiasm alone could not keep a program alive.

Rikka knew that better than anyone.

That was why she was watching this match so carefully.

She wasn't here merely because Risa was playing.

She wasn't here simply as a mother watching her daughter compete.

She was here as the principal of Seishin Academy.

She needed results.

Her gaze returned to the enormous screen.

For a moment, she watched Inori.

Then Risa's fallen character.

But neither held her attention for long.

Her eyes eventually settled on someone else.

Ruko.

The boy who had returned to Nervanox after years away.

The boy who had stepped onto the stage despite knowing what kind of opponent stood before him.

The boy who had deliberately abandoned the hero that had once defined his professional career.

The boy who had nearly defeated Inori in their first exchange.

And the same boy who had survived Sukachi's ambush through an instinctive movement that seemed to come from somewhere much deeper than conscious thought.

Rikka's eyes narrowed.

A faint grin appeared on her face.

"If I remember correctly..."

She paused.

"Your name was Ruko."

Rusto followed her gaze.

Rikka continued watching the screen.

"I underestimated you at face value."

There was no embarrassment in her voice.

Only curiosity.

Her mind returned to something Risa had said earlier.

Ruko is interesting.

At the time, Rikka had not thought much of those words.

Risa rarely became interested in people without a logical reason. Even when she did, she tended to describe those reasons analytically rather than emotionally.

But now, after watching Ruko play, Rikka was beginning to understand what her daughter had noticed.

Ruko wasn't simply another student who happened to be good at Nervanox.

There was something buried beneath the surface.

Something that had allowed him to react to Sukachi's attack without consciously thinking about it.

Something that had allowed him to stand against Inori despite having spent years away from competitive play.

And perhaps most interesting of all, something that made Risa pay unusually close attention to him.

Rikka smiled.

"You truly are an interesting little fellow."

Rusto looked at her.

"And what exactly do you intend to do about that?"

Rikka did not answer immediately.

Her attention remained on the stage.

Below them, the match continued.

Then she spoke.

"For now?"

Her smile widened.

"I'll watch."

Back on the stage, Ruko finally reached the battlefield.

Estan slowed as he entered the lane.

For only a moment, Ruko stopped.

Across the battlefield, Yamashiki stood beneath the pressure of the advancing lane.

Inori noticed him.

Her eyes lifted toward the opposing side of the screen.

Then her expression changed.

A familiar smile appeared.

The two former Nerva players were facing one another again.

Ruko and Inori.

Former teammates.

Former champions.

Now opponents.

The audience recognized it almost immediately.

The volume inside the venue began to rise once again as spectators realized that another confrontation was about to begin.

Ruko stepped forward.

Inori did the same.

Neither player looked away.

From the viewing lobby above, Rikka watched silently.

Her smile remained.

"Show me what you've got."

Her eyes sharpened as she looked down at the battlefield.

"Show me why the Gaming Club should still exist after this."

Below her, Ruko moved into position.

Inori raised Yamashiki's weapon.

The distance between them began to close.

And this time, neither of them was approaching the other blindly.

Ruko knew what Inori could do.

Inori knew what Ruko had started to recover.

The next exchange would not simply be another battle of attacks and counters.

It would be a battle between two players who had begun to understand one another.

And somewhere in the middle of that battlefield, the gap in experience remained.

For Risa, it had been the difference between recognizing a pattern and understanding the person creating it.

For Ruko, it would become something else entirely.

The next confrontation was about to begin.
