Chapter Four: A Dangerous Pull
The ceremony ended, but Lena barely remembered how.
Faces had blurred. Voices had faded. Even the final pairings passed her by like shadows she couldn't grasp. All she could feel—still—was that moment.
That look.
That connection.
It clung to her like a second skin.
"Lena," Maya called softly, snapping her back to reality. "We should go."
The clearing had begun to empty. Wolves drifted away in pairs or small groups, laughter and chatter filling the cool night air. The excitement lingered for them.
But not for Lena.
She nodded absentmindedly. "Yeah… let's go."
They walked together along the narrow path leading away from the clearing, the moonlight guiding their steps. For a while, neither of them spoke.
But the silence didn't last.
"You're going to tell me what that was," Maya said finally, her tone leaving no room for avoidance.
Lena let out a quiet sigh. "I don't even know where to start."
"Start with the part where the Alpha looked at you like the rest of us didn't exist," Maya replied quickly.
Lena stopped walking.
"So you saw that?"
"Everyone felt something," Maya said, stepping closer. "But I was watching you. That wasn't normal, Lena."
Lena wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to contain the storm building inside her.
"It felt like…" she hesitated, searching for the right words. "Like something woke up inside me."
Maya's expression shifted—less teasing now, more serious.
"And your wolf?"
Lena swallowed. "It wasn't weak."
The words hung in the air between them.
Maya's eyes widened slightly. "That's not possible."
"I know," Lena whispered. "But it's true."
Before Maya could respond, a sudden rustling sound came from the trees nearby.
Both girls froze.
The forest had gone quiet again—but not the peaceful kind of quiet. This one felt… watchful.
Lena's heart began to race.
"Did you hear that?" Maya asked, her voice low.
Lena nodded slowly.
Another sound.
Closer this time.
A branch snapped.
Maya instinctively stepped in front of Lena. "Stay behind me."
But before either of them could move, a figure stepped out from the shadows.
Lena's breath caught instantly.
The Alpha.
He stood just a few feet away, his presence as commanding as ever—but now, without the crowd, without the ceremony… it felt more intense.
More personal.
"Alpha," Maya said quickly, lowering her head in respect.
Lena followed, her gaze dropping immediately, though every part of her was aware of him.
Of how close he was.
"Leave us," he said.
The command was calm, but absolute.
Maya hesitated. "But—"
"Now."
There was no room for argument.
Maya glanced at Lena, uncertainty flickering in her eyes, but she obeyed. "I'll be close," she whispered before stepping away into the shadows.
And then…
Lena was alone with him.
The silence stretched, thick and heavy.
She didn't dare look up.
Couldn't.
Not after what had happened earlier.
"Look at me."
Her breath hitched.
It wasn't loud.
It wasn't harsh.
But it carried weight.
Slowly, hesitantly, Lena lifted her gaze.
And once again—
That connection snapped into place.
Stronger this time.
Her chest tightened, her pulse quickening as his eyes locked onto hers. There was no mistaking it now. He felt it too.
But unlike her…
He wasn't confused.
He was studying her.
"Your name," he said.
"Lena," she replied softly. "Lena Rivers."
His eyes darkened slightly at that.
"I know that name."
Lena frowned faintly. "You do?"
"Orphan," he said. "Daughter of Marcus and Elara Rivers."
Her breath caught.
No one ever spoke about her parents.
Not like this.
Not with certainty.
"Yes," she said slowly. "That's right."
A pause.
Then—
"Your wolf," he continued, his voice quieter now. "Show it to me."
Lena blinked in shock. "What?"
"Shift."
Her heart dropped.
"I… I can't," she admitted, her voice trembling. "It doesn't work properly."
He took a step closer.
Lena instinctively stepped back.
"Try," he said.
There was something in his tone—something that wasn't just authority.
Expectation.
Reluctantly, Lena closed her eyes, focusing inward.
She reached for that familiar emptiness she had always known.
That silence.
But this time…
It wasn't silent.
Something stirred.
A low hum. A pulse. A presence she had never felt this clearly before.
Her body tensed as warmth spread through her veins.
"Do you feel that?" he asked.
Her eyes flew open.
"Yes," she whispered.
"Good."
Another step closer.
Now he was right in front of her.
Too close.
"Again," he said.
Lena hesitated, fear creeping in.
"What if something goes wrong?"
His gaze softened—just slightly.
"Then I'll stop it."
Something about the way he said it made her believe him.
Trust him.
And that terrified her more than anything.
She closed her eyes again, reaching deeper this time.
The warmth grew stronger.
Brighter.
Her wolf—
No.
Not weak.
Not broken.
Something powerful pushed forward, pressing against the surface, ready to emerge.
Lena gasped, her body shaking as the energy surged through her.
And then—
A flash.
Not physical.
But in her mind.
Images.
Fire.
Blood.
A pair of glowing eyes that were not her own.
Ancient.
Fierce.
Terrifying.
She stumbled back, the connection breaking instantly.
"No!" she cried out, clutching her head.
The Alpha caught her before she hit the ground.
"Easy," he said firmly.
Lena's breathing was uneven, her entire body trembling.
"What… what was that?" she whispered.
But the Alpha didn't answer immediately.
Because now…
He knew.
His expression hardened, something dark and dangerous settling in his eyes.
"You're not weak," he said quietly.
Lena looked up at him, fear filling her chest.
"Then what am I?"
A pause.
A long, heavy pause.
Then he spoke.
"Something this pack was never meant to see again."
