Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

Sophia's heart thundered as the airplane wheels hit American ground, the thrill of returning home electrifying her senses. After years down under in Australia, the unmistakable scents of her city—hot asphalt, the faint perfume of the airport, distant exhaust—flooded her with a rush of nostalgia and anticipation. She clutched her suitcase handle tighter, trying to focus on her studies, her accomplishments, her adventures abroad. But her mind kept spiraling back to one person—Luca Virelli—the one she both feared and admired, the unforgettably captivating presence from her past.

He had been so different as a teen—aloof, distant, eyes that seemed to pierce her soul, and always glaring at her. She'd convince herself that nothing about him mattered anymore, yet that flutter in her chest told another story. What would he think now, after all these years? Would he even notice her? Or would his sharp scorn still cut as deeply as she remembered? Would he still hate her for whatever reason he has?

Shaking her head fiercely, Sophia fought to clear her thoughts. Focusing on her other siblings, on her family, and on coming home.

Her train of thought was abruptly interrupted by Valentina Virelli's cheerful shout. "Sophia! Over here!"

The driver stepped aside as Valentina practically flung herself into Sophia's embrace, squeezing her so tightly that Sophia couldn't help but laugh, warmth flooding her chest. "Valentina! I missed you so much!"

"I couldn't wait," Valentina grinned, pulling back to study her face. "You've blossomed even more. And come on—don't deny me the scoop on boys?"

Sophia rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her smile. "Valentina, not now, okay?"

The drive home was a whirlwind of laughter, teasing, and shared stories. Valentina, ever the playful sister, poked and prodded about her life in Australia and the possibility of romance. With each mile, Sophia felt the weight of years melt away, replaced by excitement and reconnecting.

Arriving at the grand Virelli mansion, Sophia was instantly enveloped in warmth. Her father, Vittorio, greeted her with proud arms and shining eyes. Brothers Marco and Alex teased and ruffled her hair, half-threatening "any boys," or they'd "shoot someone." Sophia and Isabella exchanged knowing glances, rolling their eyes amused by the brothers' antics. Isabella's gentle smile and the familiar comfort of the mansion reassured her—she'd finally returned home.

"Alright, boys, enough," Vittorio said firmly, voice rich and commanding. "Sophia is home—show some respect."

"Yes, Father," they replied, smirks still lingering.

Sophia subtly searched for Luca, hope fluttering. Isabella her mother caught her glance and shook her head slightly. "Luca isn't here right now," she said softly.

Instant relief washed over her, a quiet wave of peace. Maybe she could breathe freely for a bit before facing him again.

Together, they all stepped into the mansion's sprawling halls, laughter echoing and memories stirring.

Sophia's mind raced with curiosity and anticipation—yet for now, she simply reveled in the thrill of being home again.
