Chapter 3 - The Boundaries and Campus Encounter

Laura slammed the door to her hostel room and flopped onto her bed with a huff.

'I just don't get it,' she groaned, tossing her bag to the side. 'How does a stranger I meet for the first time think it's okay to kiss me on our first day?'

Maya, sprawled across her bed with a teasing grin, shrugged. 'Relax, Laura. Kissing is… normal. You'll get used to it.'

Laura shot her a look. 'Normal? Maybe for you, but not for me. I don't even know him properly. It wasn't funny.'

Zara, busy unpacking, leaned over with a smirk.

Well, welcome to dating 101. But honestly, you set your boundaries. You don't have to let him do anything you don't want.'

Laura exhaled slowly, feeling a little calmer. At least her roommates understood, even if they didn't fully sympathize. 'Yeah… I just… I don't like being pressured. I know my own pace.'

A few days later, the campus buzzed with the usual post-class energy. Laura was walking between lecture halls when she spotted Adrian across the quad, surrounded by a small group of his friends.

He waved as soon as he noticed her, and she forced a small, polite smile in return.

They met halfway, exchanging greetings with a hint of casual ease that didn't feel forced. 'Hey, how's it going?' he asked, his voice friendly but gentle.

Laura shrugged. 'Exhausted. Classes took more out of me than I expected today.'

They chatted briefly about lectures, campus life, and a few shared laughs about group projects, careful to keep the conversation light.

Laura enjoyed the interaction, it was nice to see him in person without feeling pushed or overwhelmed.

After a few minutes, Laura glanced at the time. 'I should head back… I need some rest.'

Adrian nodded, a soft smile playing on his lips. 'Of course. Go rest. Don't overwork yourself.'

Laura gave a quick wave before turning toward the hostel. Walking through the quiet campus paths, the exhaustion from her day weighed on her, but she felt a small satisfaction too.

She hadn't compromised her boundaries. She hadn't rushed into anything. And for her, that was more important than any fleeting thrill of romance.

As she entered the hostel, she felt the familiar comfort of her room, her bed, and the little chaos that was her life with Maya and Zara. For the first time in a while, she smiled quietly to herself.

She was learning, slowly, that she could navigate curiosity, interest, and social pressure, all without losing herself in the process.

That night, just as Laura was settling into bed, her phone lit up.

Adrian.

She hesitated for a second before opening the message.

'Hey… are you awake? Can we meet for a bit?'

Her heart did that annoying little flip again.

For a moment, she stared at the screen, reminding herself of everything she had said earlier, about boundaries, about taking things slow. But something in his tone felt softer this time… less forward, more inviting.

'Okay," she typed back. "For a short while."

* * * * *

The campus was quieter than before, wrapped in the calm of the night.

When Laura arrived, Adrian was already there, leaning casually against a bench like he had been waiting longer than he would admit.

'Hi,' he said, his voice low, almost gentle.

'Hi,' she replied.

This time, things felt… different.

The conversation flowed more easily, laughter slipping in between sentences, the earlier awkwardness fading into something warmer. But then, just like before, Adrian grew closer, his hand brushing against hers, lingering a little longer than necessary.

Laura noticed it.

She always did.

But this time… she didn't pull away.

Instead, she let the moment sit. Let the closeness stay. Let herself feel it.

And somehow, without realizing when it happened, her resistance softened.

They sat side by side, the silence between them no longer uncomfortable.

'So,Adrian said after a while, glancing at her, 'I don't think I've really told you much about myself.'

Laura turned slightly. 'I'm listening.'

He smiled faintly. 'I'm from California, Los Angeles, specifically. Grew up there my whole life.'

There was a pause before he continued, almost casually, 'My dad owns a tech company, software and all that. My mom's into real estate, she flips houses, manages properties. So yeah… I guess you could say I come from a pretty comfortable background.'

Laura blinked slightly, absorbing it.

Comfortable was an understatement.

Adrian chuckled softly. 'Don't let it scare you. I'm still normal, I promise.'

She laughed, shaking her head. 'I'm not scared,

just surprised.'

He nudged her lightly. 'What about you?'

Laura took a small breath. 'I'm not from anything fancy,' she said honestly. 'Just a regular middle-class family. My dad works in civil service, and my mom runs a small business.'

She hesitated, then added with a small smile, 'And me… I'm a nail technician. I do it part-time. It helps me take care of myself.'

Adrian looked at her, genuinely impressed. That's actually really cool. Not everyone can say they're building something for themselves already.'

Laura felt a small warmth rise in her chest.

The conversation slowed, but the closeness didn't.

Adrian's hand found hers again, more deliberate this time. His touch was familiar now, less shocking, more… expected.

And Laura didn't resist.

When he leaned in, she didn't freeze like before.

She met him halfway.

This time, the kiss wasn't sudden.

It was chosen.

Still unfamiliar, still not perfect, but softer, longer, and harder to pull away from.

Laura felt her heart race in a way she couldn't explain. Logic whispered in the background, reminding her to be careful, to slow down, but the moment was louder.

For the first time, she wasn't just curious anymore.

She was drawn in.

Completely.

Later, as she walked back to her hostel under the dim lights, her thoughts were all over the place.

She knew she was moving faster than she planned.

She knew she wasn't fully in control the way she liked to be.

But even with all that…

She couldn't deny it.

Laura was already falling, faster than she ever expected.
