Riley's POV
The familiar warmth of Caleb's house wraps around me as we step through the front door, but it does nothing to chase away the chill that has settled deep in my bones. The kids launch themselves at us immediately, their small bodies colliding with ours in a tangle of excited limbs and breathless chatter. I force my lips into what I hope resembles a smile, but the weight of what we learned at the hospital presses down on my shoulders like a lead blanket.
Felix pulls back from our embrace first, his sharp green eyes darting between Caleb and me with the unsettling perception that only children seem to possess. His small face scrunches into a frown that makes my heart clench.
"Why do you both look like someone died?" he demands, his voice carrying that accusatory tone that cuts straight through any pretense.
