Chapter 1: The Girl Who Wasn't Supposed to Be Brave

When I was born, I was just a girl.

That's what everyone said.

Not "a blessing," not "a miracle," not even "a joy." Just a girl. And somehow, that one word carried a weight heavier than anything I could understand back then.

My mother told me later that when I cried for the first time, the room was silent. Not because something was wrong—but because something wasn't "right" in their eyes.

A girl.

But my mother held me close anyway.

"She will be different," she whispered.

No one believed her.

I grew up in a small village surrounded by fields, rivers, and stories—stories whispered at night, stories of ghosts in banyan trees, hidden treasures, and a jungle no one dared to enter.

The jungle.

People called it The Endless One.

They said once you go in… you never come back.

Of course, I didn't believe that.

I was never good at believing what people told me.

My name is Anaya.

And this is the story of how I walked into that jungle.

And why no one could ever finish telling it.

From a young age, I was different. Not stronger, not smarter—just… unwilling to accept limits.

"Don't climb trees," they said.

So I climbed the tallest one.

"Don't go near the river alone."

So I went at night.

"Girls should stay quiet."

So I asked questions.

Too many questions.

Why can't girls go to school far away?

Why do boys get freedom?

Why is fear taught like a rule?

No one had answers. Only anger.

But my grandmother… she was different.

She used to sit outside our house every evening, watching the sunset as if it was telling her secrets.

One day, I asked her,

"Dadi, is the jungle really cursed?"

She smiled.

"Cursed? No."

"Then why does no one go there?"

"Because people fear what they don't understand."

"Then what's inside?"

She looked at me carefully, like she was deciding something important.

"Stories that never end."

That answer stayed with me.

Stories that never end.

I liked that.

Years passed, and my curiosity only grew stronger.

By the time I turned fourteen, the jungle had become more than just a place. It was a mystery. A challenge. A calling.

Every day, I would stand at the edge of the fields and look toward it.

Dark. Silent. Alive.

It felt like it was watching me back.

One evening, something strange happened.

The sky turned an unusual shade of orange—not the soft sunset kind, but something deeper, almost… glowing.

The wind became still.

Too still.

Even the birds stopped chirping.

And then…

I heard it.

A whisper.

"Come…"

I froze.

It wasn't loud. It wasn't scary.

It was… inviting.

Again.

"Come…"

I turned around. No one was there.

But the voice didn't feel outside.

It felt like it came from inside my head.

Or maybe… from the jungle.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

The whisper echoed again and again.

"Come…"

I knew I shouldn't go.

I knew what everyone said.

But something inside me refused to listen.

The same voice that made me climb trees.

The same voice that made me question everything.

The next morning, I made a decision.

I would go.

Not because I was brave.

But because I couldn't ignore it anymore.

I packed a small bag.

Some food. Water. A notebook. A pencil.

If the jungle really had stories…

I would write them.

Before leaving, I went to my grandmother.

She was already awake, as if she knew.

"Dadi…"

She didn't look surprised.

"You're going, aren't you?"

I nodded.

She sighed—but not in fear.

In understanding.

"Remember one thing," she said.

"The jungle doesn't trap people."

"Then what does?"

She looked straight into my eyes.

"They get lost in themselves."

I didn't fully understand.

But I remembered.

As I walked toward the jungle, my heart started racing.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

The village behind me grew smaller.

The trees ahead grew taller.

Darker.

Closer.

Like they were closing in.

At the entrance, I stopped.

This was it.

The place no one returned from.

The place of endless stories.

The place calling my name.

For a moment…

I hesitated.

What if they were right?

What if I never came back?

What if—

"Come…"

The whisper again.

Soft.

Familiar.

Waiting.I took a deep breath.

"I'm coming," I said.

And stepped inside.

The moment I crossed the boundary, everything changed.

The air felt different.

Heavier. Colder.

The sounds of the outside world disappeared.

No birds. No wind.

Just silence.

And then…

A sound.

Footsteps.

Not mine.

I turned quickly.

No one.

But the feeling…

I wasn't alone.

The trees here were strange.

Twisted. Tall. Almost unnatural.

Their branches looked like hands reaching out.

Watching.

Waiting.

I walked deeper.

Every step felt like I was entering another world.

A world where rules didn't apply.

Where time felt… slow.

Or maybe fast.

I couldn't tell.

Then I saw something.

A mark on a tree.

A symbol.

Carved.

It looked old.

Very old.

I touched it.

And suddenly—

A flash.

Images.

Voices.

People.

Running.

Screaming.

Laughing.

Crying.

All at once.

I pulled my hand back.

My heart was pounding.

"What was that…?"

And then I realized something terrifying.

The jungle wasn't empty.

It was full.

Full of memories.

Full of stories.

Full of… people.

Not alive.

But not gone either.

And somewhere in all that…

I heard my name.

"Anaya…"

I froze.

That voice…

It wasn't the whisper from before.

It was… familiar.

Too familiar.

"Anaya…"

I turned slowly.at I saw…

Made me fororget how to breathe..

My eyes were wide open, but my body felt frozen—like the jungle itself had wrapped invisible chains around me.

Standing in front of me… was me.

Not exactly.

It looked like me. Same face. Same eyes. Same height. But something was wrong. Very wrong.

Her eyes were darker. Not black… but deeper. Like they had no end.

And her smile—

It wasn't human.

"Hello, Anaya," she said softly.

My throat felt dry. "Who… who are you?"

She tilted her head slightly, observing me as if I were a puzzle she had already solved.

"I was about to ask you the same thing."

"What?"

"You entered my jungle," she said calmly. "So tell me… who are you?"

My heart started pounding again.

"Your jungle? This is not yours!"

She smiled wider.

"Isn't it?"

The air suddenly felt colder.

I took a step back.

"Stay away from me."

She didn't move. She didn't need to.

"Why are you afraid?" she asked. "You came here on your own."

"I didn't come for this."

"Oh," she said, pretending to think. "Then what did you come for? Adventure? Answers? Or… yourself?"

Her words hit harder than I expected.

"I came to find the truth," I said, trying to sound strong.

"And what if the truth is not what you want?"

"I'll still face it."

For a moment, her expression changed.

Not mocking. Not smiling.

Almost… impressed.

"Good," she said slowly. "Because once you enter this jungle… there is no going back the same."

"What does that mean?"

"It means," she stepped closer, "you will lose something."

My breath stopped.

"Lose… what?"

She leaned in slightly and whispered—

"Yourself."

Suddenly, the ground beneath me trembled.

The trees started shaking.

A loud sound echoed through the jungle—like something ancient had just woken up.

"What is happening?!" I shouted.

She looked around, calm as ever.

"They know you're here."

"Who knows?!"

But before she could answer—

A shadow moved behind the trees.

Then another.

And another.

My heart raced.

"Who are they?!"

She stepped back.

"Run."

"What?"

"RUN!"

That was all I needed.

I turned and ran as fast as I could.

Branches scratched my arms. Roots tried to trip me. The jungle felt alive—like it didn't want me to escape.

Behind me, I could hear footsteps.

Not one.

Many.

I didn't dare look back.

"Keep running… keep running…" I whispered to myself.

But then—

I heard a scream.

Not mine.

Hers.

I stopped.

"No… I can't—"

But something inside me forced me to turn back.

And what I saw—

Was worse than anything I imagined.

The "other me" was standing in the middle of the path.

Surrounded.

Dark figures were circling her.

They didn't have clear faces. Just shadows… moving, breathing, watching.

"Leave her!" I shouted without thinking.

Big mistake.

All the shadows stopped.

Slowly…

They turned toward me.

Silence.

Dead silence.

Then one of them moved closer.

I stepped back.

My legs were shaking.

"Don't move," the other me said.

"What are they?!"

"They are… what's left."

"That doesn't help!"

"They are the ones who entered the jungle… and never found their way out."

My stomach dropped.

"You mean… they're—"

"Not alive," she said. "But not gone either."

One shadow came closer.

Then another.

They were surrounding me now.

Just like her.

"Why are they coming after me?" I whispered.

She looked straight into my eyes.

"Because you're not like the others."

A shadow suddenly reached toward me.

I screamed and closed my eyes.

But instead of pain—

I felt something else.

Memories.

Not mine.

A boy running through the jungle.

A woman crying for help.

A man lost, screaming into darkness.

Fear.

Loneliness.

Hopelessness.

I opened my eyes, gasping.

"What… was that?!"

"They're trying to pull you in," she said.

"Into what?!"

"Their story."

I shook my head.

"No… no, I won't let that happen."

"Then don't stop," she said.

"Don't stop what?"

"Moving."

Suddenly, she grabbed my hand.

Her touch was cold—but strong.

"Follow me."

We started running together.

The shadows followed.

Faster.

Closer.

"Where are we going?!" I shouted.

"To the only place they can't reach."

"And where is that?!"

"You'll see!"

We ran deeper into the jungle.

The trees became thicker. The light faded.

Everything turned darker.

Scarier.

Then suddenly—

We stopped.

In front of us…

Was something impossible.

A giant tree.

But not just any tree.

This one was… different.

It was glowing.

Faintly.

Like it had a heartbeat.

"What is this…?" I whispered.

She looked at it with a serious expression.

"This… is the center."

"The center of what?"

She turned to me.

"The jungle."

The shadows stopped at a distance.

They didn't come closer.

They just watched.

"Why aren't they coming?" I asked.

"Because they can't."

"Why?"

"Because this tree doesn't belong to them."

I stepped closer to it.

The glow became stronger.

I could feel something.

A pull.

A connection.

"Don't touch it yet," she warned.

"Why?"

"Because once you do… everything will change."

I looked at her.

"Then why did you bring me here?"

She smiled again.

But this time…

It wasn't scary.

It was… sad.

"Because," she said quietly,

"This is where your real story begins."

The ground shook again.

The shadows started getting restless.

The air became heavy.

I looked at the tree.

Then at her.

Then back at the tree.

"What happens if I touch it?" I asked.

She took a deep breath.

And said—

"You'll remember… who you really are."

My heart skipped a beat.

"Anaya," she said softly,

"Are you ready to know the truth?"

I hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then slowly…

I raised my hand.My fingers finally touched the glowing tree.

The moment I did—

A sharp light burst around me.

I couldn't see anything… only white.

Then suddenly—

I was no longer in the jungle.

I was standing in my village.

But something was wrong.

Everything looked the same… yet different.

People were running.

Crying.

The sky was dark.

I saw my mother.

She was holding me… but I was just a baby.

"Save her!" someone shouted.

"Hide her before it finds her!"

My heart started racing.

"Before what finds her?"

Then I saw it.

At the edge of the village…

A giant shadow.

Not human.

Not an animal.

Something far worse.

It moved slowly… but everything around it faded.

Like it was swallowing the world itself.

I tried to move, but I couldn't.

I was just watching.

Helpless.

Then I heard a voice again—

The same voice from the jungle.

"Now you see…"

The scene started breaking apart.

Cracks of light everywhere.

"Your story didn't begin in the jungle…"

The voice whispered—

"It created you."

I screamed—

And everything went dark.

And moved it toward the glowing tree.
