Chapter 4 - The Kokuha-Dan Assembles

The safe house was underground. It was located beneath an abandoned textile factory in the industrial district. The walls were concrete. The air was cool and dry. Servers hummed in the corner. They emitted a low blue light. A large table sat in the center. It was made of steel. Maps were spread across the surface. Digital tablets glowed beside paper charts.

Dante stood at the head of the table. He wore a black coat. The collar was turned up. His hands were in his pockets. He did not sit. The team arrived one by one. They entered through the secure door. They took their positions around the table. No one spoke. They knew the protocol. Silence until briefed.

Isaac Ryūen sat to Dante's right. He opened his laptop. He plugged in three external drives. The screens flickered to life. Code scrolled across the displays. He adjusted his glasses. He looked at Dante. He waited for the objective. Lisa Fujikawa sat to the left. She cleaned her fingernails with a small knife. She did not look up. She listened. Her hearing was sharper than most. She caught the shift in Dante's breathing. It was slight. It was there.

Eikichi Kurosawa stood by the door. He was the guard. He leaned against the frame. His arms were crossed. His eyes scanned the room. They stopped on Dante. He watched the leader. He had known Dante for five years. He knew the baseline. Something was off. Kisuke Midorikawa sat at the far end. He spun a pen on the table. He looked bored. But his eyes were alert. He stopped spinning the pen. He placed it down. The room was ready.

Dante said, "We have a situation."

The team remained silent. They waited for elaboration. Dante kept his voice flat. It was devoid of emotion. It was the voice of a machine. But the machine was running hot.

Dante said, "An anonymous client attempted to hire us. The job was declined. I need to trace the client's identity."

Isaac said, "Declined? You never decline."

Dante said, "I declined this one."

Isaac said, "Understood. Do we have any data points?"

Dante said, "Payment channels. Communication patterns. Encrypted routing."

Isaac nodded. He turned to his screens. His fingers began to fly across the keyboard. The sound of typing filled the room. It was rhythmic. It was fast. Data streams merged on the main monitor. A map of the city appeared. Red lines connected nodes.

Isaac said, "Routing the signal now. It bounces through three proxies. All located in different sectors."

Dante said, "Strip the proxies."

Isaac said, "Working on it. Firewalls are military grade. This is not a standard contract."

Lisa said, "Standard clients do not use military encryption."

Dante said, "This client is not standard."

Eikichi said, "Is there a threat level?"

Dante said, "Potential. High."

Eikichi uncrossed his arms. He stood straighter. His hand moved closer to his holster. He did not draw. He just prepared. The air in the room grew heavier. The hum of the servers seemed louder.

Isaac said, "I found a breach."

The team looked at the main screen. A single node pulsed red. It was located on the coast. The label read Heukseong. The text was bold. It blinked steadily.

Isaac said, "The client used a broker. The broker operates out of Heukseong. The payment originated from a shell company registered there."

Dante said, "Can you trace the broker?"

Isaac said, "Yes. But it will take time. The broker uses rotating identities."

Dante said, "How much time."

Isaac said, "Twenty-four hours to pinpoint a physical location."

Dante said, "You have twelve."

Isaac did not flinch. He did not argue. He simply typed faster. The code scrolled quicker. The red lines on the map multiplied. They converged on the coastal city. The connection was established.

Lisa said, "Heukseong is hostile territory."

Dante said, "I know."

Lisa said, "Our presence there will be noted."

Dante said, "We will not be present. Not yet."

Kisuke said, "So we send a drone?"

Dante said, "We send data. Lisa will handle the infiltration."

Lisa closed her knife. She slipped it into her boot. She looked at Dante. Her expression was neutral. But her eyes were questioning. She sensed the urgency. It was not normal for a declined job.

Lisa said, "Why the rush for a declined contract?"

Dante said, "Because the client knows too much."

Lisa said, "About what."

Dante said, "About us."

The room went silent. The implication hung in the air. If the client knew them, they were vulnerable. Vulnerability was death in their line of work. Eikichi pushed off the door frame. He walked closer to the table.

Eikichi said, "He knows our names?"

Dante said, "He knows how to reach us."

Eikichi said, "That is not the same."

Dante said, "It is close enough."

Eikichi studied Dante's face. He looked for the tell. He looked for the crack in the armor. He found it in the voice. It was not the usual cold command. It was strained. It was tight. It sounded like a wire about to snap. Eikichi had heard Dante order hits. He had heard him plan wars. He had never heard him sound like this.

Eikichi said, "You are hiding something."

The room froze. Isaac stopped typing. Lisa went still. Kisuke stopped leaning back. All eyes turned to Dante. The leader did not move. He did not blink. He looked at Eikichi. The gaze was heavy. It was dangerous.

Dante said, "Focus on the mission."

Eikichi said, "I am focused. That is why I am asking."

Dante said, "The mission is the client. Nothing else."

Eikichi said, "Understood."

Eikichi did not push further. He knew the limit. He had reached it. He stepped back to the door. He resumed his position. But his eyes remained on Dante. He would watch. He would wait. He would protect the team from whatever Dante was not saying.

Kairo said, "They suspect."

Dante said, "Let them."

Kairo said, "Trust is a finite resource."

Dante said, "I am not spending it."

Mūn said, "You are spending yourself."

Dante said, "Quiet."

Isaac said, "Connection established. I have the broker's digital signature."

Dante said, "Send it to Lisa."

Lisa caught the data drive. She slipped it into her pocket. She stood up. She adjusted her jacket. She looked at Dante.

Lisa said, "I will start the trace."

Dante said, "Go."

Lisa walked to the exit. She passed Eikichi. She did not speak. The door hissed open. She stepped out into the hallway. The door closed behind her. The room was quieter now. The tension remained.

Isaac said, "I will monitor the channel."

Dante said, "Do not sleep."

Isaac said, "I do not sleep."

Dante turned away from the table. He walked to the corner of the room. He faced the wall. He looked at the maps pinned there. They showed the city. They showed the routes. They showed the dangers. He traced a line with his finger. It led to the coast. It led to Heukseong.

Kisuke said, "Boss."

Dante said, "What."

Kisuke said, "We got your back. You know that."

Dante did not turn around. He kept looking at the map. The line ended at a red dot. The broker. The client. The truth.

Dante said, "I know."

Kisuke said, "Good. Because you look like you need it."

Dante said, "Get to work."

Kisuke shrugged. He spun his pen again. He went back to his screen. The hum of the room returned. The work continued. The clock was ticking. The verification window was still open. The team was moving. But the leader was standing still.

Dante touched the map. He pressed hard. The paper crinkled. He thought about the window across the street. He thought about the shadow behind the curtain. He thought about the lie he had told the team. It was easier than the truth. The truth would break them. The truth would break her.

Eikichi watched him. He saw the hand on the map. He saw the pressure. He saw the white knuckles. He did not speak. He just waited. He knew that when the break came, it would be loud. He hoped they would be ready.

Dante said, "Twelve hours."

Isaac said, "Counting down."

Dante said, "Make it count."

He turned from the wall. He walked to the door. He stopped beside Eikichi. He did not look at him. He opened the door. He stepped into the hallway. The light faded as the door closed. The team was left in the blue glow. They looked at each other. They said nothing. They went back to work.
