Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Into the Depths

Crossing into the forest again felt… different.

Last time, I was reacting.

This time—

I was prepared.

The air still carried that same heaviness, but it didn't slow me down. My steps were quieter now. Controlled. Every movement had intent.

Pip floated slightly ahead, scanning the area.

"Stay sharp," he said. "We're heading straight back to where we saw it."

"I know."

My grip tightened on the reinforced dagger.

The deeper we went, the more familiar everything became.

Broken branches.

Disturbed ground.

Faint tracks leading inward.

"Same pattern," I said. "They're still moving toward it."

"Or being pulled," Pip added.

That didn't make it better.

We moved carefully, avoiding unnecessary noise.

A rustle came from the right—

I reacted instantly.

Quick Step.

Shift.

Turn.

A Forest Fang leapt out—

Too slow.

One clean slash—

Then a follow-up strike.

It dropped immediately.

---

Enemy Defeated

---

"No hesitation," Pip said. "Good."

I nodded. "No wasted movement."

We kept going.

Further.

Deeper.

The light began to fade again as the trees thickened.

Then—

It happened.

Silence.

Just like before.

I stopped walking.

"So we're close," I said.

"Yeah," Pip replied quietly.

The hum returned.

Low.

Constant.

Unnatural.

I could feel it now—not just hear it.

Like it was vibrating through my chest.

"That's new," I said.

"It's stronger than before," Pip replied.

I crouched slightly, scanning the area.

Shadows moved again.

Not hiding this time.

Watching.

Waiting.

The smaller creatures were already here.

But something was different.

"They're closer," I said.

"And more organized," Pip added.

I stood up slowly.

"That means it knows we're coming."

Before Pip could respond—

The ground trembled.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

The creature stepped out again.

The same twisted form.

The same unnatural presence.

But now…

It felt heavier.

Stronger.

Like it had grown.

"Tell me you can see its level now," I said.

Pip was silent.

"...No," he said.

I exhaled slowly.

"Of course not."

The creature stared at me.

All of its eyes focused at once.

That pressure hit again—

But this time…

I didn't freeze.

I stepped forward.

Pip blinked. "Wait—what are you doing?"

"Testing something," I said.

"You're testing the thing that almost killed you?"

"Exactly."

The creature tilted its head.

Curious.

Good.

That meant it wasn't attacking immediately.

I raised my dagger slightly.

Energy gathered in my hand.

Not fully.

Just enough.

A warning.

A signal.

"I'm not running this time," I said quietly.

The creature made that distorted sound again.

The smaller monsters shifted.

Tension filled the air.

"Okay… maybe don't provoke it too much," Pip said.

"Too late."

The creature moved.

Not a full attack—

Just a step forward.

But the pressure spiked instantly.

It was testing me.

Like before.

I activated Quick Step—

Not to dodge—

But to reposition.

Closer.

Pip's eyes widened. "You're insane."

"I need to know," I said.

The creature reacted.

Fast.

A limb shot toward me—

I twisted—

Barely avoiding it—

And countered instantly.

"Energy Strike!"

The attack landed.

Direct hit.

For a split second—

Nothing happened.

Then—

The energy dispersed.

Like it hit something solid.

But not flesh.

Not normal.

The creature didn't stagger.

Didn't flinch.

Didn't even react.

I jumped back immediately.

"That… did nothing," I said.

Pip's voice was tight. "Yeah. I saw."

The creature tilted its head again.

Then—

It took another step forward.

Slower this time.

Heavier.

"Okay," I said. "New conclusion."

"Say it," Pip said.

"We can't beat it."

"Correct."

The smaller creatures began to close in again.

More than before.

Tighter formation.

Less space.

"They're adapting," I said.

"No," Pip replied. "It's controlling them better."

That was worse.

Way worse.

I scanned quickly.

Looking for an opening.

There—

A narrow gap to the right.

But closer to the main creature.

Risky.

Very risky.

"Same plan?" Pip asked.

"Better plan," I said.

I focused.

Energy gathered again—

But this time, I didn't use it for a strike.

I compressed it.

Held it.

"Since when can you do that?" Pip asked.

"Since now."

The creature stepped forward again—

Closer.

Too close.

"Ready?" I said.

"No," Pip replied.

"Good."

I moved.

Quick Step activated—

I dashed forward—

Not away—

Toward the creature.

"What are you doing?!" Pip shouted.

At the last second—

I released the energy.

Not as a punch—

But as a burst.

The force exploded outward—

Kicking up dirt, leaves, and debris.

A temporary blind.

The creature paused—

Just for a moment—

That was enough.

I shifted direction instantly—

Slipping through the narrow gap—

Dodging past two smaller monsters—

And sprinting forward.

"GO GO GO!" Pip yelled.

"I AM!"

Behind me—

That distorted sound echoed again.

Louder.

Sharper.

Angrier.

But still—

It didn't chase.

Or couldn't.

I didn't look back.

Not this time.

I just ran.

Through branches.

Through uneven ground.

Through everything.

Until—

The silence broke.

The hum faded.

The normal sounds returned.

I slowed down gradually, breathing hard.

"…Okay," I said between breaths. "That was worse than last time."

"Way worse," Pip agreed.

I leaned against a tree, thinking.

"Direct attacks don't work," I said.

"Right."

"It's controlling everything around it."

"Yeah."

"And it's getting stronger."

Pip nodded slowly.

"Which means…"

I looked back toward the deep forest.

"We're missing something."

Pip crossed his arms.

"Yeah," he said. "A weakness."

I stood up straight.

"Then that's what we find next."

"For that," Pip said, "we'll need more than training."

"Like what?"

He looked toward the village.

"Information."

I nodded.

"Then we go back again."

But this time…

It didn't feel like retreat.

It felt like strategy.

Because now I understood something clearly—

That thing wasn't just an enemy.

It was a problem.

And problems…

Could be solved.

One way or another.
