Chapter 2 - juggernaut

The sky was the color of lead, as if a heavy burden was pressing down upon the world. My father didn't tell me where he was taking me. We simply drove toward an unknown destination, staring out the car window. Finally, we stopped before a massive complex surrounded by towering walls and barbed wire, with armed guards stationed at every step.

SLD. The acronym sounded so cold.

After passing through several intense security checks, we finally entered the Director's office. The man sitting behind the desk stared intently at my father.

— "So, Sanji, how is your son progressing?"

I looked at my father, confused. His face held a cold confidence I had never seen before.

— "He is almost ready," he said curtly.

— "Father, what are you talking about?" I asked, bewildered. My father smiled at me, but there was no warmth in it.

— "My son, you will be the savior of this world. Together, we will cleanse our land of the invaders."

The Director stood up and approached me.

— "So, you're Sanji's boy? I'll get straight to the point: you are going to be a Juggernaut pilot."

My heart raced. Juggernaut! The massive war machines I had seen on TV—humanity's last hope. In that moment, a sense of pride swelled within me. I was going to be a hero! But back then, I didn't know the heavy price one had to pay to become a pilot.

The Final Test

When we returned home that day, I overheard my father speaking on the phone behind a closed door:

— "Yes... he's not fully ready yet. His fear is fading. Tomorrow we'll conduct the final test. If he passes, he'll be a true pilot."

The next day, my father took me to a prison on the outskirts of the city that housed the world's most hardened criminals. The air reeked of decay and hatred.

— "Kazuko, come here," my father said, leading me to a set of bars.

Inside sat a man. Hearing about his crimes made my stomach churn; I couldn't stop myself from retching. He was a monster who had brutally murdered two innocent little girls. My father pressed a cold knife into my hand.

— "You must kill him, Kazuko."

— "What? No! Dad, tell me you're joking! Let's get out of here!" I screamed.

My father's voice thundered:

— "Kazuko! Will you allow such a disgusting creature to live? If you don't do this, it will be bad for your sister, do you understand?"

At the thought of my sister, my entire body began to shake. "Forgive... forgive me," I whispered, looking at the monster. He cried and begged, but there was no turning back now. As I drove the knife into his head, hot, salty blood splattered across my face. In that instant, something inside me broke forever.

When I got home, I was in a trance. My sister entered my room and saw my hands trembling.

— "Brother, where did you go with Dad? You'll feel better if you tell me," she said kindly.

I couldn't say a word to her. Once she left, I went to the mirror. My reflection mocked me with a sinister grin.

— "Well, did you enjoy it? Do you think the number of killers in the world decreased by one?"

— "Shut up!" I screamed, shattering the mirror with my fist. One murderer was gone, but a new one had been born. And it was me.

The Awakening

Suddenly, the entire city shook. An explosion! My father ran in.

— "The invaders are attacking! Let's go, the time has come!"

At the SLD center, they suited me up in specialized gear. When I entered the cramped cockpit of the Juggernaut, I saw a girl in the seat next to mine. There was a strange sorrow in her blue eyes.

— "I'm Silfi. What's your name?" she asked.

— "Kazuko..."

When they connected the neural wires to my brain, I screamed in agony. All my most painful memories—the blood in the prison, my sister's gaze—began to swirl in my mind.

— "Control your memories!" Silfi shouted.

We deployed. Before us stood a massive, savage creature with a tiny head but unnervingly long arms. The moment it saw us, it lunged, tossing our multi-ton Juggernaut like a toy ball.

We scrambled up and drew our katana. I attacked with all my might, severing one of the creature's arms. But it transformed its other arm into a spear and struck the left side of the cockpit—where Silfi was sitting.

Shards of metal flew everywhere. Half of Silfi's body... was gone. Her warm blood sprayed over me.

— "SILFI!!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

She was the first real friend I had ever made. In that moment, I forgot fear. Only hatred remained. Gripping the katana tight, I plunged it into the creature's neck and tore its head from its body. The area was filled with blood and twisted metal.

I had triumphed over the enemy, but my soul was empty.

> This is a very powerful, cinematic scene. Would you like me to help you expand on the lore of the SLD or perhaps write a continuation of Kazuko's journey after the battle?
