Chapter 10 - Crystal Marshes 3

The serpent guided their boat through a hidden channel, where the water grew so clear they could see entire beds of glowing crystals stretching to the marsh floor. Above them, the trees formed a canopy of twisted branches that let in only slivers of light, but the crystals below lit their way like a submerged sky.

"This is incredible," Hana whispered, leaning over the boat's edge to touch the water. "I've never seen anything like it."

The serpent surfaced beside them, its amber eyes seeming to beckon them forward. It led them to a small, circular clearing where the water was still as glass, and in its center rose a stone platform covered in intricate carvings, older than anything they'd seen yet.

"This must be a sacred place," Ren said, tying the boat to a root as they stepped onto the platform.

The carvings told a story: of the first bearer of the Ancient God Body, who worked with the Water Folk, the temple guardians, and the people of Silverleaf to seal away a great darkness centuries ago. At the center of the carving was a figure that looked both like a god and a human, with a mark identical to Hana's on their neck.

"They weren't alone then either," Hana said, tracing the lines with her finger. "The power was meant to be shared, not carried by one person."

Ren nodded, studying the final panel of the carving. "Look, here's the seal they used. It's made of three parts: light from the Ancient God Body, water from the marshes, and earth from the mountains. That's us, that's what we've been gathering along the way."

As he spoke, the ground beneath the platform began to shake. Black mist rose from the water around them, and the corruption surged forward, thicker and more intense than ever before. A voice echoed through the clearing, cold and sharp as ice:

"You think you can stop me with old stories and borrowed power? The light belongs to those strong enough to take it!"

The Voidkeeper's voice sent shivers down their spines. The corruption took shape, a massive hand reaching for the stone platform, its fingers made of cracked black crystal.

Hana closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of her focus crystal, the cool touch of the marsh water, and the solid ground beneath her feet. "Ren, we need to combine everything we have. The light, the water magic from Kael's vial, and the strength of the mountains in your staff."

Ren pulled out the small water vial Kael had given them, while gripping his staff with his other hand. Hana placed her hands on the platform, and golden light spread across the carvings, making them glow with renewed life.

"Now!" she shouted.

Ren broke the vial, and water magic surged outward to wrap around the corruption's hand. He channeled Hana's light through his staff, and the stone beneath them added its own earthy power to the mix. Together, the three forces merged into a single burst of light that shattered the corruption into thousands of tiny, harmless pieces.

The mist cleared, and the water around them glowed brighter than ever. The serpent surfaced one last time, letting out a soft rumble before disappearing into the depths, its work done.

As they climbed back into the boat, the marshes around them seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. The reeds hummed a cheerful tune, and the crystals on the water's surface sparkled like diamonds.

By sunset, they had reached the end of the Crystal Marshes. The golden plains stretched out before them, leading to the Heart of Aetheria, its central peak glowing with a warm white light that cut through the evening sky. A path of smooth stones, worn down by centuries of travelers, led straight toward the mountain.

Ren helped Hana out of the boat, then pulled out the sketch he'd made of their Tokyo apartment. He added a small drawing of the marsh serpent and the glowing crystals at the bottom.

"For our wall," he said, smiling.

Hana took his hand, her eyes shining with a mix of fear and hope. "We've come so far. Whatever happens next, we'll face it as a team, just like the first bearer did."

They took their first steps onto the golden plains, the path ahead clear and bright. The Heart of Aetheria waited, and soon, they would learn the truth about the Voidkeeper, and what it would take to save both Aetheria and their way back home.
