Chapter 123 - Chapter 95: Operation Briefing

The words lingered in the Operations Center.

"Now... we finish what General Hale started."

No one moved.

For several long seconds, the only sound came from the quiet hum of the massive holographic projector suspended above the circular command table.

General Marcus Hale studied the room.

Veteran officers.

Operations staff.

Commanders.

Engineers.

And standing together near the entrance...

Forty-eight first-year Academy cadets.

His gaze swept across them before stopping on Commander Elara Vance.

He smiled.

"I suppose we'd better not keep them waiting."

Commander Vance returned a small nod.

"No, sir."

General Hale turned toward the operations floor.

"Colonel."

The senior operations officer immediately stepped away from one of the holographic terminals.

"General."

"Begin the deployment briefing."

"Yes, sir."

The conversations throughout the Operations Center stopped almost instantly.

Officers returned to their stations.

Technicians activated additional displays.

The lights dimmed slightly as the holographic projector above the command table brightened.

The image of Kharos Vale dissolved.

Then expanded.

Instead of the entire planet, only one continent remained.

It slowly rotated above the command table.

Towering mountain ranges stretched from north to south.

Massive rivers cut through endless green.

The jungles were unlike anything the cadets had ever seen.

They seemed to cover everything.

A sea of emerald stretching farther than the eye could follow.

Only small patches of civilization interrupted the wilderness.

Forward Command.

Several military outposts.

Roads branching outward.

Everything else...

Belonged to the planet.

David found himself staring at the enormous jungle.

From orbit...

It had looked impressive.

Standing beneath the holographic projection...

It looked endless.

The Colonel spoke.

"This is the Eastern Continental Theater."

The image enlarged again.

Hundreds of faint white grid lines appeared across the landscape.

Every section of the continent had been divided into operational sectors.

Letters stretched across one axis.

Numbers across the other.

The result resembled a massive military map.

Some grids glowed green.

Others amber.

Many remained dark.

Along the outer frontier...

Entire regions pulsed crimson.

Commander Vance folded her hands behind her back.

"This..."

She gestured toward the hologram.

"...is how every Whitefall campaign begins."

The holographic display shifted.

Forward Command glowed bright blue.

Roads spread outward like veins.

Each road connected to another secured grid.

Then another.

The Colonel continued.

"When humanity arrives on a world..."

"We establish a foothold."

Forward Command brightened.

"Our engineers build the first defensive position."

"Supply lines are secured."

"Communications are established."

He touched another control.

Eight crimson sectors illuminated beyond the frontier.

"Everything beyond that..."

He looked toward the cadets.

"...must be reclaimed."

Silence filled the room.

General Hale stepped beside the holographic map.

"Every grid represents territory still under monster control."

Towering jungle filled each highlighted sector.

Mountain ranges.

Deep valleys.

Rivers twisting through dense vegetation.

Ancient forests whose enormous canopies blocked much of the sunlight from reaching the ground below.

Some areas were so densely overgrown that even aerial reconnaissance could see little beneath the trees.

The General slowly circled the projection.

"Every campaign follows the same objective."

He pointed toward one crimson grid.

"A combat squad is assigned."

Another blue marker appeared.

"They establish a Forward Operations Camp."

A second marker appeared deeper inside the sector.

"From there..."

"They begin systematic elimination of every hostile creature within the operational boundary."

Red life-sign markers flickered across the jungle.

Hundreds of them.

Some clustered together.

Others wandered alone.

The Colonel zoomed in farther.

The jungle became astonishingly detailed.

Ancient trees rose hundreds of feet into the air.

Massive rivers split the terrain.

Rock formations pierced through the canopy.

Mist rolled between steep valleys.

It no longer looked like a map.

It looked like another world.

General Hale continued.

"When a grid has been completely cleared..."

Several red markers disappeared.

The grid slowly changed from crimson...

To amber.

"Military reconnaissance verifies there are no remaining hostile populations capable of threatening operations."

The grid changed again.

Amber became green.

Immediately...

New blue icons appeared.

Engineering Division.

Biological Recovery Division.

Survey Teams.

Construction Units.

Road networks.

Communications towers.

Landing platforms.

The transformation happened before their eyes.

Untamed wilderness...

Became civilization.

General Hale looked toward the cadets.

"Only after that process is complete..."

"Does the squad receive another assignment."

David watched roads slowly spread from the newly secured sector.

They connected with another road.

Then another.

Eventually reaching Forward Command.

His eyes widened slightly.

Now he understood.

The city they had walked through earlier...

The hospitals.

The workshops.

The landing districts.

The defensive walls.

None of it had appeared overnight.

Every kilometer had first been someone's battlefield.

Every road had once been dense jungle.

Every building stood because another squad had completed another mission.

Forward Command wasn't simply built.

It had grown.

One secured grid at a time.

General Hale let the realization settle across the room before speaking again.

"Every squad deployed from this command has the same responsibility."

He looked directly at the forty-eight cadets.

"You are not explorers."

"You are not settlers."

"You are the force that makes both possible."

The words settled heavily over the room.

The Colonel touched another control.

The holographic map shifted once more.

Eight separate sectors illuminated across the frontier.

Each pulsed independently.

Commander Vance stepped forward.

"These..."

She said calmly.

"...are your assignments."

Every cadet instinctively straightened.

Even the veteran officers turned their attention toward the display.

This wasn't theory anymore.

This was deployment.

The Colonel glanced toward General Hale.

The General gave a single nod.

"Proceed."

The Colonel looked down at the datapad in his hand.

"Alpha Squad."

Seren Nightvale stepped forward without hesitation.

Her silver hair caught the blue glow of the holographic display as she stopped before the command table.

"Commander."

The Colonel acknowledged her with a nod before touching the map.

One of the crimson sectors expanded.

Grid F-03

The jungle filled the air above the table.

Towering cliffs surrounded most of the sector.

A wide river split the landscape nearly in half before disappearing beneath the dense canopy.

Only a handful of reconnaissance flight paths crossed the area.

"This is your operational sector."

A blue marker appeared near the northern cliffs.

"Drop Zone One."

The image shifted slightly.

The marker rested atop a rocky plateau overlooking the surrounding jungle.

"You will establish your Forward Operations Camp here."

Several yellow circles appeared around the plateau.

"Natural high ground."

"Limited approach routes."

"Suitable for aerial resupply."

The Colonel zoomed deeper into the jungle.

Red markers appeared.

Then more.

Then dozens more.

"Estimated hostile population..."

He paused briefly.

"Two hundred ninety-three confirmed Common-class creatures."

"Fifty-eight Uncommon."

"Nine Rare."

The cadets exchanged brief glances.

Even the smallest assignment contained hundreds of monsters.

Then...

One final marker appeared.

Unlike the others...

It pulsed.

Larger.

Brighter.

Deep crimson.

The room became noticeably quieter.

"Apex Predator."

The display magnified the location.

Deep inside the valley.

Near a waterfall hidden beneath the canopy.

"Designation..."

The Colonel read from the reconnaissance file.

"Emerald Fang Tyrant."

"Estimated Level Twenty-One."

"Territorial."

"Aggressive."

"Responsible for multiple reconnaissance casualties."

He looked toward Seren.

"Military intelligence believes most creature activity within F-03 centers around this Apex."

"Once it is eliminated..."

"The remaining population is expected to become disorganized."

General Hale folded his arms.

"Your objective?"

Seren answered immediately.

"Establish Forward Operations Camp."

"Advance through Grid F-03."

"Eliminate all hostile creatures."

"Terminate the Apex Predator."

"Report the sector secure."

General Hale nodded once.

"Correct."

"When Engineering Division confirms the grid..."

He touched the hologram.

The crimson sector shifted to green.

"...you'll receive your next assignment."

Seren saluted.

"Understood, General."

She stepped back beside Alpha Squad.

The Colonel looked down at his datapad once more.

"Delta Squad."

Kael Starwyn stepped forward.

The holographic terrain changed beneath the Colonel's hand.

Grid F-03 collapsed back into the larger continental map before another crimson sector expanded several kilometers to the east.

**Grid G-05**

The terrain differed immediately from Alpha Squad's assignment.

Instead of steep cliffs surrounding a central valley, G-05 was divided by jagged ridgelines that rose through the jungle like the exposed spine of some enormous buried creature.

Dense vegetation covered the lower elevations.

Trees crowded against one another until their interlocking canopies formed a solid green ceiling.

Higher along the ridges, the jungle thinned into tangled brush, exposed stone, and narrow mountain passes.

Water ran through nearly every depression.

Small rivers descended from the mountains, feeding a wide marsh that occupied the southern third of the grid.

Kael studied the sector without visible reaction.

The Colonel enlarged its western boundary.

A blue symbol appeared on a narrow shelf of stone halfway up the nearest ridge.

"Drop Zone Two."

The shelf overlooked a natural basin between three ridgelines.

Several possible approach routes appeared in pale yellow.

"Your transport will place you here."

The Colonel tapped the marker.

"The ledge is large enough for one transport to descend at a time. Your equipment and prefabricated camp modules will be unloaded with you."

The image rotated.

A wall of stone protected the northern side of the drop point.

The eastern and western approaches narrowed into steep paths that could be defended by only a few people.

The southern face overlooked the jungle below.

"You will establish your Forward Operations Camp against this rock formation."

A rectangular perimeter appeared.

"Natural cover on one side."

"Clear lines of sight across the basin."

"A spring was identified approximately two hundred meters northeast of the landing point. Water testing will be your responsibility before use."

Kael nodded once.

"Understood."

The Colonel moved his hand across the display.

Red markers began appearing throughout the sector.

Most clustered in the lower jungle.

Others occupied the mountain passes.

A smaller number moved through the marsh in the south.

"Confirmed population consists of three hundred forty-one Common-class creatures."

"Ninety-two Uncommon."

"Fourteen Rare."

The number drew quiet attention from several cadets.

Delta Squad's grid contained nearly twice the number of Uncommon creatures assigned to Alpha.

Kael's expression remained composed.

Behind him, Maelis Tidalith watched the marshland carefully while Orin Feld focused on the mountainous center of the grid.

Lysa Thorn's eyes moved between the yellow approach routes.

Garrick Holt folded his arms.

Helena Crestfall remained perfectly still.

The Colonel touched the southern marsh.

Several red markers merged into a wide moving cluster.

"Most Common-class creatures travel in groups through the lower wetlands."

Another cluster appeared in the eastern passes.

"The Rare-class population is more territorial. Intelligence suggests they occupy separate hunting ranges throughout the ridgelines."

The projection shifted toward the center of the sector.

One large crimson symbol appeared inside a narrow canyon.

"Apex Predator."

The canyon magnified.

Steep black walls rose on either side of a shallow river.

Aerial scans showed broken trees and enormous tracks pressed into the mud.

"Designation: Ironback Ravager."

A partial reconstruction appeared beside the terrain.

The creature stood on six heavy legs.

Its broad body was protected by overlapping plates of dark mineralized hide. Two curved growths extended from its lower jaw, while a line of thick spines ran from its shoulders to the end of its tail.

"Estimated Level Twenty-Two."

"Extremely durable."

"Capable of producing short-range seismic impacts by striking the ground with its forelimbs."

The display showed a reconstruction of the creature bringing both front legs down.

A circular fracture spread through the holographic earth.

Several cadets shifted their weight.

The Colonel continued.

"Reconnaissance indicates it rarely leaves the central canyon."

"However, the canyon divides the northern and southern halves of your assigned grid."

Kael's gaze remained fixed upon the route.

They couldn't clear G-05 without eventually passing through the Apex Predator's territory.

General Hale looked toward him.

"How do you intend to approach the mission?"

Kael considered the map for only a moment.

"We establish camp and clear the northern basin first."

His finger traced the elevated terrain around the drop point.

"We remove anything capable of threatening our position, then secure the two western passes."

He shifted toward the eastern ridge.

"Once the higher terrain is cleared, we descend into the jungle and work south."

"And the canyon?" Hale asked.

"We don't enter it until we've removed the surrounding populations."

Kael looked toward the crimson Apex marker.

"The Ravager's strength is its durability and its ability to control confined terrain."

"If we fight it before securing the surrounding sector, other creatures could be drawn toward the battle."

His eyes moved briefly toward Maelis.

"We clear the grid around it."

"Then we isolate it."

General Hale's expression showed the faintest trace of approval.

"Sound approach."

Commander Vance spoke from beside the table.

"Do not mistake isolation for safety."

Kael looked toward her.

"I won't, Commander."

"The seismic impacts described in the report were recorded from more than sixty meters away."

Vance's gaze sharpened.

"Do not allow your squad to become trapped between the creature and the canyon walls."

Kael saluted.

"Understood."

The Colonel closed the grid.

"Delta Squad will deploy aboard Transport Twenty-One."

"Departure at zero-six-hundred."

"Report to Landing Platform Eight no later than zero-five-forty-five."

Kael stepped back into formation.

The Colonel checked his datapad.

"Epsilon Squad."

Serik Valen moved forward.

He carried himself differently from Seren and Kael.

Less rigid.

But no less attentive.

The map shifted northward.

A new grid expanded.

**Grid D-08**

At first, the sector appeared almost entirely blue.

Then David realized the color did not represent military control.

It was water.

A vast river entered the grid from the north before dividing into dozens of winding channels.

Islands of dense jungle rose between them.

Some were barely larger than the Operations Center.

Others stretched for several kilometers.

Vines hung from enormous trees.

Dark water filled the spaces beneath the canopy.

Mist clung to the surface.

Beyond the floodplain, the eastern edge of the grid rose sharply into forested hills.

The Colonel enlarged a narrow island near the northwestern boundary.

"Drop Zone Three."

A blue marker appeared on the island's highest point.

"The ground here is elevated enough to remain above the flood line."

A topographical layer spread over the terrain.

"The island is approximately nine hundred meters long and four hundred meters wide."

"Aerial reconnaissance identified only three land approaches during the current water level."

Narrow banks of mud connected the island to nearby sections of jungle.

"That may change after rainfall."

Serik studied the river channels.

"How quickly?"

"Water levels can rise two meters in less than an hour."

Damon Kade quietly exhaled behind him.

Bran Norix leaned closer to the map.

Ione Marrow's gaze moved toward the darker waterways to the south.

Alira Fen and Rhea Solen exchanged a brief glance.

The Colonel placed a camp perimeter on the island.

"Your Forward Operations Camp will be positioned here."

"Anchor every structure."

"Establish elevated storage immediately."

"Do not place equipment near the western bank."

The bank flashed red.

"Reconnaissance recorded substantial erosion beneath the surface."

Serik nodded.

"Understood."

Hostile markers began spreading throughout the waterways.

Unlike the previous grids, many did not remain on land.

They moved through the rivers.

"Confirmed population: two hundred eleven Common-class creatures."

"Seventy-four Uncommon."

"Seventeen Rare."

Several larger contacts appeared beneath the water.

"Most hostile populations in D-08 are amphibious."

The Colonel isolated one of the moving groups.

A reconstruction appeared.

Long-bodied creatures with wide, finned tails moved through the water. Their forelimbs ended in hooked claws adapted for gripping trees and muddy banks. Flat armored heads rested almost level with the surface, leaving only narrow eyes visible above the water.

"They conceal themselves beneath vegetation and attack from below."

Another species appeared.

Four-legged creatures clung to the trunks of enormous trees, their narrow bodies covered in moss-like growths that allowed them to disappear against the bark.

"Others remain above the water and use the canopy to move between islands."

June stared at the projection.

"Wonderful," he whispered.

Mira glanced toward him.

"You dislike water?"

"I dislike water when it has teeth."

Castiel kept his eyes on the hologram.

"Most things here have teeth."

"That has not improved my opinion."

The exchange remained quiet enough that the officers ignored it.

Or chose to.

The Colonel shifted the map toward the southern floodplain.

The water there darkened.

One crimson marker pulsed beneath the surface of a broad circular lake.

"Apex Predator."

No reconstruction appeared.

Only fragmented scan data.

A long shape beneath the water.

An enormous circular disturbance.

Several deep gouges carved into nearby trees.

"Designation: Drowned Crown Serpent."

"Estimated Level Twenty-Two."

"Length estimated between thirty-eight and forty-five meters."

The room became still.

Serik's eyes narrowed.

"Estimated?"

"We have not obtained a complete visual."

The Colonel displayed a sequence of aerial images.

In the first, the lake appeared calm.

In the second, the surface had begun to rise.

In the third, something enormous twisted beneath it.

The next image showed only shattered branches and a reconnaissance drone falling toward the water.

"It remains submerged for extended periods."

"Current intelligence suggests it detects movement through pressure changes in the surrounding waterways."

Serik looked at the branching rivers.

Everything in the grid eventually connected to the lake.

"So it can move beyond the marked territory."

"Possibly."

The Colonel did not soften the answer.

"We have confirmed signs of its passage in three southern channels."

Commander Vance stepped closer.

"Your first priority is not the Apex."

Serik looked toward her.

"Secure the drop island."

"Establish observation points above the canopy."

"Learn the waterways before you begin pushing south."

Her eyes moved to each member of Epsilon.

"Your terrain will be as dangerous as the creatures."

"The floodplain changes."

"Channels disappear."

"New ones form."

"A route that exists in the morning may be underwater by nightfall."

Serik nodded.

"We'll mark elevated fallback points as we advance."

"Good."

General Hale gestured toward the grid.

"Your squad was selected for D-08 because of its balance."

His eyes passed over Epsilon's members.

"Mobility."

"Control."

"Range."

"And the ability to adapt when the battlefield refuses to remain still."

Serik saluted.

"We'll clear it."

The Colonel closed the display.

"Epsilon Squad will deploy aboard Transport Thirty-Four."

"Landing Platform Ten."

"Zero-six-hundred departure."

Serik returned to his squad.

The next name followed immediately.

"Sigma Squad."

Elric Ironcrest stepped forward.

The hologram moved west.

**Grid E-11**

The sector rose into a mountain wall.

Jungle covered the lower slopes, but as the elevation increased, the trees grew smaller and farther apart.

Black stone dominated the upper half of the grid.

Deep ravines divided the landscape.

Natural bridges stretched between cliffs.

Waterfalls poured through gaps in the rock before disappearing into the jungle below.

Clouds gathered around the highest peaks.

The Colonel rotated the map until the northeastern edge faced the cadets.

"Drop Zone Four."

A blue icon appeared within a shallow valley sheltered by three mountains.

The valley floor was open compared to the surrounding terrain.

Grass and low vegetation had replaced the jungle.

A narrow stream ran through its center.

"This valley will serve as your Forward Operations Camp."

The map displayed several defensive positions.

"The northern wall is too steep for most ground-based creatures."

"The eastern and western entrances are narrow enough to control."

"The southern slope provides your primary route into the sector."

Elric studied the elevations.

"Weather?"

"Unstable."

The Colonel activated an atmospheric overlay.

Clouds moved rapidly across the mountains.

"Heavy rain."

"Low visibility."

"Frequent lightning."

"Temperature changes of more than twenty degrees between the valley floor and the upper ridges."

Cassian Mire frowned at the display.

Myra Vel focused on the southern slope.

Darek Thorn and Jorin Halvek watched the ravines, while Selene Ivaris examined the cloud movements.

The Colonel continued.

"Confirmed hostile population: one hundred eighty-four Common-class creatures."

"One hundred six Uncommon."

"Twenty-three Rare."

That caused a different reaction.

The total number was lower than the other assignments.

But the concentration of stronger creatures was much higher.

"Most of the Common population remains below the tree line."

He raised the terrain.

"The higher elevations belong to larger predators."

Red markers appeared across the ridges.

Many occupied caves.

Others remained on exposed cliffs.

"Several species possess natural climbing adaptations."

A reconstruction showed a broad-limbed creature moving almost vertically up stone, using hooked growths along its forearms and legs.

"Others are capable of limited flight."

Winged shapes circled the peaks.

The Colonel then highlighted the western ridge.

A crimson Apex marker appeared at its highest point.

"Designation: Stormcrest Harrier."

The reconstruction showed a massive winged predator with four legs folded beneath its body. Its wings were broad and leathery, reinforced along their edges with bone-like plates. A crown of curved horns swept backward from its narrow skull.

Electrical energy flickered between the horns.

"Estimated Level Twenty-Three."

"Capable of generating localized electrical discharges."

"Highly mobile."

"Possesses complete territorial control over the western half of E-11."

Elric stared at the Apex's projected flight path.

It crossed nearly the entire grid.

"How often does it leave the ridge?"

"Daily."

The Colonel displayed several routes.

"It hunts throughout the mountains before returning to a cave system near the summit."

Elric's jaw tightened slightly.

Unlike Alpha's Apex or Delta's Ravager, Sigma's primary target would not remain inside one territory while they cleared around it.

It could find them.

General Hale watched him interpret the map.

"You understand the problem."

"It can attack our camp."

"Yes."

"And it will likely identify your arrival before your transport leaves the grid."

The statement changed the atmosphere around Sigma Squad.

The Colonel highlighted the valley.

"Your camp location was chosen because surrounding peaks restrict direct descent."

"He'll have to approach from the south or circle through the eastern gap."

Elric traced both routes with his eyes.

"We establish elevated lookouts immediately."

"Correct."

"We keep the camp compact."

"Correct."

"And no one moves outside the defensive perimeter alone."

Commander Vance answered this time.

"That rule applies to every squad."

Her eyes moved across all forty-eight cadets.

"You are entering hostile grids with incomplete intelligence."

"Until the sector has been cleared, there is no safe ground."

"No one wanders."

"No one separates from their squad without direct authorization."

"And no one pursues a retreating creature into terrain they have not surveyed."

Several cadets straightened further.

"Yes, Commander," Elric answered.

The others echoed him.

"Yes, Commander."

General Hale looked toward Sigma Squad.

"Your grid contains fewer creatures than the others."

His voice remained measured.

"Do not mistake that for an easier assignment."

"The predators in E-11 have survived because they are strong enough to control the mountains."

"You will need to be stronger."

Elric saluted.

"We will be."

"Transport Nineteen," the Colonel said. "Landing Platform Six. Departure at zero-six-hundred."

Elric returned to his squad.

The holographic map shifted once again.

"Titan Squad."

Brant Solaryn stepped forward.

He was broader than most of the cadets, with a steady presence that seemed to fill the space around him even before he spoke.

"Sir."

The Colonel expanded the next sector.

**Grid J-06**

The landscape was enormous.

A wide expanse of jungle covered the northern half of the grid, but the southern terrain descended into a sprawling canyon system.

Red stone walls cut across the earth.

Some ravines were narrow enough for a person to jump across.

Others opened into vast chasms whose bottoms disappeared beneath shadow and mist.

Several rivers entered the canyons from the jungle, creating underground waterways and caves.

The eastern edge of the grid contained a field of stone pillars rising from the trees.

Each towered hundreds of feet above the canopy.

Brant's eyes moved slowly across the terrain.

The Colonel highlighted a flat mesa near the western boundary.

"Drop Zone Five."

The top of the mesa was wide and mostly bare.

Only low grass and scattered stone formations interrupted the open ground.

"Your Forward Operations Camp will be established here."

The projection measured the cliff faces.

"Elevation: one hundred twelve meters above the surrounding jungle."

"One natural path reaches the summit from the north."

"Your transport will place additional cable anchors along the western cliff for emergency extraction and supply lifting."

Brant nodded.

"How far from the nearest water source?"

"Just under one kilometer."

A river appeared below the eastern side of the mesa.

"Access requires descending through this ravine."

Brant's eyes remained on it.

"Then we carry enough water to establish camp before securing the route."

"Correct."

The Colonel activated the hostile overlay.

The jungle and canyon system filled with red contacts.

"Confirmed population: four hundred twelve Common-class creatures."

"One hundred nineteen Uncommon."

"Nineteen Rare."

The number was the highest yet.

Kyra Mosswood shifted slightly behind Brant.

Rowan Creed stared toward the largest concentrations.

Marek Dorne examined the canyon network.

Aelis Thorn and Thalen Veydris studied the mesa and surrounding approach routes.

The Colonel enlarged the northern jungle.

"Most of the Common population travels in large herds."

Several clusters moved together.

"These creatures migrate between the jungle and the canyon floor."

The reconstruction displayed thick-bodied animals moving on four legs. Their backs were covered by tall curved plates that resembled overlapping leaves until they lifted away from the body, exposing sharp edges underneath.

"They are normally defensive."

The Colonel changed the image.

The herd charged through trees, splintering trunks beneath its combined weight.

"When threatened, the entire group attacks."

Another group appeared within the canyons.

Long, pale creatures moved along the walls and ceilings of caves.

"Uncommon predators hunt the migration routes."

Brant studied the movement patterns.

"If we disturb the herds too early, we'll push them deeper into the canyons."

"Or toward your camp," the Colonel said.

A crimson marker appeared in the eastern pillar field.

The scale of the contact dwarfed the surrounding signatures.

"Apex Predator."

The stone pillars enlarged.

Something moved between them.

At first, David thought it was another pillar.

Then the shape lowered.

Four enormous legs pressed into the jungle floor.

A long neck rose above the canopy.

Its body was protected by thick gray-green armor that resembled layered bark and stone.

Two sweeping horns curved from either side of its skull.

"Designation: Pillarhorn Behemoth."

"Estimated Level Twenty-Four."

The Operations Center became silent.

It was the strongest Apex revealed so far.

"Height at the shoulder: approximately seventeen meters."

"Total length: thirty-one meters."

"Current intelligence indicates it feeds on mineral deposits within the pillar field and moves through the eastern jungle every four to six days."

Brant looked toward the migration routes.

The Apex's path crossed several of them.

"It controls the herds."

"Not directly," the Colonel replied. "But the smaller creatures alter their movement whenever it leaves the pillar field."

The display showed herds scattering as the enormous predator approached.

"Its movement could send hundreds of creatures across the grid at once."

General Hale stepped nearer to Brant.

"Your squad's greatest threat will not be a single creature."

He pointed toward the clustered contacts.

"It will be numbers."

"The canyons can trap you."

"The herds can surround you."

"And the Apex is powerful enough to destroy your camp if it reaches the mesa."

Brant studied the terrain for several seconds.

"We clear the northern approach first."

He pointed toward the only path to the summit.

"Then we establish barriers along the ascent."

His finger shifted toward the river ravine.

"We secure water access before beginning the wider operation."

He looked toward the eastern jungle.

"And we track the Apex's movement before engaging any of the major herds."

General Hale nodded.

"Why?"

"Because if we force a migration without knowing where the Behemoth is..."

Brant glanced toward the canyons.

"...we could drive the entire population in the wrong direction."

"Good."

Commander Vance looked toward the rest of Titan Squad.

"Strength will help you survive J-06."

Her gaze returned to Brant.

"But control will clear it."

Brant saluted.

"We understand."

"Transport Forty-Two," the Colonel said. "Landing Platform Fourteen. Departure at zero-six-hundred."

Brant returned to his squad.

Five assignments now glowed around the edge of the holographic frontier.

F-03.

G-05.

D-08.

E-11.

J-06.

Each grid was different.

Each contained its own dangers.

Hundreds of creatures.

Unfamiliar terrain.

An Apex Predator powerful enough to dominate everything around it.

Yet the Operations Center did not feel uncertain.

Officers recorded the assignments.

Technicians finalized transport routes.

Logistics personnel transmitted camp manifests.

The campaign continued moving around them with disciplined precision.

The Colonel lowered his datapad.

"Omega Squad."

Lucan Pyreforge stepped forward.

The holographic map shifted once again.

A crimson sector expanded across the Operations Center.

Grid C-12

Unlike the previous assignments, this sector was dominated by dense rainforest.

Ancient trees towered hundreds of feet above the jungle floor, their enormous branches weaving together into an almost unbroken canopy.

Sunlight barely reached the ground.

Countless vines hung between the trunks.

Small rivers wound through the undergrowth before disappearing beneath thick vegetation.

Visibility beneath the canopy was estimated at less than twenty meters.

The Colonel highlighted a rocky rise near the western boundary.

A blue marker appeared.

"Drop Zone Six."

The terrain rotated.

The ridge overlooked several natural game trails leading deeper into the jungle.

"You will establish your Forward Operations Camp here."

A defensive perimeter appeared around the ridge.

"The elevated terrain provides the only reliable observation point within several kilometers."

The Colonel enlarged the surrounding jungle.

Red contacts immediately filled the display.

"Confirmed hostile population."

"Three hundred eighteen Common-class creatures."

"Eighty-one Uncommon."

"Sixteen Rare."

The markers continued moving beneath the canopy.

Unlike previous sectors, they rarely remained in one location.

"Most hostile populations in C-12 are highly mobile."

"They migrate constantly through the rainforest."

Lucan studied the movement patterns.

"So we'll be hunting them."

"Correct."

The Colonel expanded the center of the grid.

A massive crimson marker pulsed beneath the canopy.

"Apex Predator."

A reconstruction slowly formed.

A massive feline-like creature emerged from the hologram.

Its body was covered in dark emerald fur broken by thick armored plates running across its shoulders and spine.

Six powerful legs carried it silently across enormous tree branches.

Long bladed claws extended from each paw.

Its tail ended in a heavy bone club lined with wicked spikes.

"Designation."

"Verdant Stalker."

"Estimated Level Twenty-Two."

"It rarely enters open terrain."

"It hunts almost exclusively beneath the canopy."

General Hale folded his arms.

"If you wish to eliminate it..."

"You'll have to fight on its ground."

Lucan gave a confident nod.

"We'll bring it down."

The Colonel closed the display.

"Omega Squad."

"Transport Thirty-One."

"Landing Platform Eleven."

"Departure at zero-six-hundred."

Lucan saluted before returning to his squad.

The Colonel activated the next assignment.

"Vanguard Squad."

Taryn Ignivar stepped forward.

The holographic map shifted once more.

A new crimson sector expanded.

Grid K-02

This part of Kharos Vale differed dramatically from every previous assignment.

Towering jungle still dominated much of the landscape...

But enormous volcanic ridges cut across the sector.

Black cliffs rose above rivers of cooled lava.

Steam drifted from countless cracks in the earth.

Pockets of dense rainforest clung to the lower valleys where fresh water continued to flow.

The Colonel highlighted a broad plateau overlooking the southern valley.

A blue marker appeared.

"Drop Zone Seven."

The terrain rotated.

Steep cliffs protected three sides of the plateau.

Only one gradual ascent connected it to the surrounding jungle.

"You will establish your Forward Operations Camp here."

A defensive perimeter appeared.

"Natural elevation."

"Excellent visibility."

"Limited ground approaches."

The hostile overlay activated.

Red contacts spread throughout the valleys.

Many clustered around the geothermal vents.

"Confirmed hostile population."

"Three hundred forty-seven Common-class creatures."

"Ninety-four Uncommon."

"Twenty Rare."

Taryn watched quietly.

The Colonel enlarged the eastern valley.

A single crimson marker pulsed near the largest volcanic formation.

"Apex Predator."

A reconstruction appeared.

The creature resembled an enormous reptilian predator nearly fifteen meters long.

Dark obsidian-colored scales covered its body.

Glowing crimson veins pulsed beneath overlapping armor plates.

Two massive horns swept backward from its skull.

Heat shimmered around the creature as it walked.

"Designation."

"Magma Crown Drake."

"Estimated Level Twenty-Four."

"It frequently moves between geothermal vents."

"Extreme caution is advised."

Commander Vance stepped beside the hologram.

"This sector presents two enemies."

She pointed toward the volcanic terrain.

"The creatures."

Then toward the glowing fissures.

"And the environment."

She looked directly at Vanguard Squad.

"Do not allow the terrain to become your greatest enemy."

Taryn answered immediately.

"Understood, Commander."

General Hale nodded.

"Clear K-02."

"Once Engineering Division declares the sector secure..."

"The campaign advances."

The Colonel closed the projection.

"Vanguard Squad."

"Transport Twenty-Six."

"Landing Platform Three."

"Departure at zero-six-hundred."

Taryn saluted.

"We'll complete the mission."

She returned to formation.

Seven sectors now surrounded Forward Command.

Only one crimson sector remained.

Unlike the others...

It lay farther from every established military position.

Larger.

Darker.

Almost completely lacking reconnaissance data.

The Colonel lowered his datapad.

Instead of reading the final assignment...

He looked toward General Hale.

The General met his gaze.

After a brief moment, he stepped forward.

"I'll handle this one."

The room grew noticeably quieter.

Even the officers working throughout the Operations Center paused.

Commander Vance remained silent.

She already knew which assignment remained.

General Hale's eyes settled on the six cadets standing together near the center of the formation.

"Gamma Squad."

David stepped forward.

Castiel moved beside him without hesitation.

Nyra followed.

Lucian.

June.

Mira.

The six members of Gamma Squad stood together before the holographic table.

Unlike the previous briefings, General Hale didn't immediately activate the map.

He studied them first.

One by one.

His gaze lingered on each face.

Not as a commander inspecting cadets...

But as a soldier judging whether those standing before him understood what was about to be asked of them.

"The reports from your Academy instructors have been thorough."

His eyes settled on David.

"So were the reports submitted after the Unknown Planet Incident."

Silence settled over the Operations Center.

Several officers looked toward Gamma Squad.

Even those who had heard the story knew only fragments.

An unidentified planet.

Loss of communication.

A destroyed gate.

A God-tier creature.

And six first-year cadets who somehow returned alive.

General Hale continued.

"You've already experienced conditions that most soldiers won't encounter until years into their careers."

His voice remained calm.

"You fought without support."

"Without reliable intelligence."

"Without reinforcement."

"You adapted."

"You survived."

His gaze swept across the squad once more.

"That's why I'm assigning your squad to a sector originally designated for veteran military units."

The room grew noticeably quieter.

Several cadets exchanged uneasy glances.

Even Kael Starwyn looked toward David.

Seren's expression remained composed, though her attention never left the General.

The holographic map shifted.

The final crimson sector slowly expanded.

It dwarfed every other assignment displayed around Forward Command.

**Grid H-09**

A murmur spread through several officers before quickly dying away.

The terrain continued expanding until nearly the entire Operations Center was surrounded by jungle.

Massive mountain ranges divided the sector from north to south.

Ancient forests stretched for dozens of kilometers.

Several rivers carved deep valleys through the wilderness before disappearing beneath thick vegetation.

Large cave systems riddled the mountains.

Multiple waterfalls descended into hidden basins.

Unlike every previous briefing...

Much of the terrain remained dark.

Entire sections of the map were marked UNKNOWN.

General Hale looked toward Gamma Squad.

"H-09 covers more territory than any operational grid assigned during this deployment."

"No engineering teams have entered it."

"No recovery teams."

"No long-range reconnaissance patrol has successfully crossed it."

The display zoomed toward the northern mountains.

Signal interference icons appeared almost immediately.

"Satellite coverage becomes unreliable here."

Another section expanded.

Drone flight paths ended abruptly.

Several simply disappeared.

"We've lost reconnaissance drones."

"Long-range sensors."

"And autonomous survey units."

Commander Vance folded her arms.

"We don't know whether they were destroyed..."

"...or simply stopped transmitting."

June blinked.

"So..."

"We're walking into a place the military can't even map?"

General Hale looked directly at him.

"Correct."

June let out a slow breath.

"Well..."

"I was hoping for something relaxing."

Lucian smirked.

"You can relax after we survive."

A few quiet chuckles escaped nearby officers before discipline quickly returned.

General Hale activated another layer.

Instead of population numbers...

The display showed scattered crimson warning markers.

Unlike the previous grids...

No totals appeared.

"No confirmed hostile population."

David frowned.

"No estimate?"

The General shook his head.

"We don't have one."

Another section of jungle darkened.

"We've confirmed hostile activity."

"Beyond that..."

"We don't know."

Silence returned.

For the first time during the entire deployment briefing...

No one had numbers.

No one knew what waited inside the grid.

General Hale enlarged the western mountain range.

A blue marker appeared on a broad stone plateau overlooking a river valley.

"Drop Zone Eight."

The terrain rotated slowly.

Steep cliffs protected two sides of the plateau.

A narrow ridge provided the only ground approach.

Fresh water flowed less than four hundred meters below.

"This will become your Forward Operations Camp."

He paused.

"If..."

"...you can hold it."

No one spoke.

General Hale enlarged the surrounding terrain.

Unlike every previous briefing...

More than half the map remained covered by static.

Unknown.

Unexplored.

Unanswered.

Then another warning appeared.

Multiple large crimson indicators.

Not one.

Not two.

Several.

David narrowed his eyes.

General Hale noticed.

"Those are confirmed high-level biological signatures."

"They are not confirmed Apex Predators."

"They are simply the largest signatures we've detected."

Lucian frowned.

"How many?"

"We don't know."

"The signatures move."

"They disappear."

"They reappear somewhere else."

Nyra stared at the display.

"So there could be more."

"There almost certainly are."

The room fell completely silent.

General Hale finally looked toward David.

"H-09 isn't your assignment because it's the hardest."

"It's your assignment because, based on everything we've observed..."

"...you're the squad most likely to come back alive."

He let those words settle over the room.

Then he pointed toward the massive unexplored sector.

"Your primary mission is to establish Forward Camp Eight."

"From there, begin systematic reconnaissance of H-09."

"Neutralize hostile creatures only when necessary to secure operational objectives."

He looked at each member of Gamma Squad.

"But unlike every other squad..."

"I expect you to adapt."

"If intelligence changes..."

"You change."

"If the battlefield changes..."

"You change."

"If survival requires abandoning the original plan..."

"You survive first."

David met the General's eyes.

"We'll bring everyone home."

Silence settled over the Operations Center.

General Hale studied the six young cadets standing before him.

They were confident.

Determined.

Just as every promising squad had been before their first real campaign.

A faint smile crossed his face.

"I hope you do."

The smile disappeared almost as quickly as it had come.

His expression became that of a soldier who had survived too many battlefields.

"But remember this."

The room grew quiet.

Even the officers nearby stopped what they were doing.

Hale's gaze remained fixed on Gamma Squad.

"Sometimes..."

"Success isn't measured by how many enemies you kill."

His eyes moved from David...

...to Castiel...

...to the rest of the squad.

"Sometimes..."

"...success is making sure someone lives long enough to finish the mission."

No one moved.

Hale looked across the six young cadets one final time.

For just a moment...

He wondered how many of them would be standing together when this deployment was over.

Then the moment passed.

"Dismissed."
