Chapter 116 - Chapter 93 — Departure (Part 1 of 4)

Part 1 — Before Dawn

The Academy was still asleep.

Moonlight lingered over the stone buildings as the final hours of night slowly gave way to dawn.

For the first time in nearly a year...

There were no bells.

No instructors shouting across the training grounds.

No cadets racing through the corridors.

Only silence.

Room B-17 was dark.

David opened his eyes before the alarm crystal chimed.

For a moment...

He simply lay there.

Listening.

The quiet felt different this morning.

Not peaceful.

Anticipating.

Today wasn't another day at the Academy.

Today...

They were leaving.

He sat up slowly.

Across the room...

Castiel was already awake.

He sat on the edge of his bed fastening the straps around his forearms.

The Shadow Blade rested against the wall beside him.

David smiled.

"...Morning."

Castiel looked up.

"...Morning, D."

"You sleep?"

"...Enough."

David chuckled.

"Same answer as always."

"...Same question."

David shook his head with a smile.

"...Fair."

Neither of them spoke again for several minutes.

They had done this routine so many times that words weren't necessary.

David pulled on his black tactical combat suit.

Lightweight.

Flexible.

Built for movement.

Next came the white tactical coat.

The familiar gold trim caught the first rays of dawn filtering through the window.

He fastened each clasp carefully.

Checked every pocket.

Every strap.

Every buckle.

Finally...

He reached for the black Claw Gauntlets resting on his desk.

The polished black metal reflected the growing morning light.

He slid one onto his right hand.

The internal locks clicked into place.

Then the left.

The familiar weight settled comfortably around his forearms.

Almost immediately...

They felt like part of him.

Not equipment.

An extension of himself.

Across the room...

Castiel finished securing the Shadow Blade across his back.

Dark steel.

Almost black beneath the dim light.

The weapon seemed to absorb the shadows around it.

He adjusted the shoulder strap once.

Satisfied.

"...Ready?"

David nodded.

"...Yeah."

Neither moved.

Instead...

Their eyes drifted around the room.

Two beds.

Two desks.

The bookshelf June constantly borrowed from without asking.

The chair Nyra always claimed whenever everyone gathered in their room.

The corner where Mira usually sat quietly reading.

The empty space Lucian always stood in whenever conversations became crowded.

Every part of the room held a memory.

David smiled.

"...Hard to believe."

Castiel looked over.

"What?"

"We've lived here almost a year."

"...Feels shorter."

"...Feels longer."

David laughed.

"...Somehow both."

Castiel nodded once.

"...Yeah."

David reached down and picked up the small room key resting on the desk.

He looked around one last time.

The room was exactly as they had left it.

Beds made.

Desks organized.

Nothing out of place.

"...We'll be back."

His voice was quiet.

Almost to himself.

Castiel looked toward the doorway.

"...Of course."

David nodded.

He believed it.

Without question.

He reached for the light switch.

The room fell into darkness.

The door clicked shut behind them.

Room B-17 stood empty.

Waiting.

Outside...

The first hints of sunrise painted the eastern horizon.

Dormitory Building One slowly came to life.

Doors opened.

Cadets stepped quietly into the hallway.

Armor already polished.

Weapons secured.

Faces calm.

No one needed reminding what today was.

Every squad gathered naturally.

Without instruction.

Without delay.

Gamma Squad met in front of the dormitory entrance exactly as they always had.

Lucian arrived first.

Every strap on his equipment perfectly aligned.

The crimson hilt of the Bloodcrest Blade rested comfortably against his back.

Nyra followed moments later.

Her silver hair drifted gently in the morning breeze.

The twin Wind Crest Swords rested at her sides.

Freshly issued Rare-tier blades.

Elegant.

Balanced.

Ready.

Mira stepped outside carrying her twin fold-out blades at her hips.

She gave everyone a quiet smile.

"...Morning."

David smiled back.

"Morning."

June burst through the doorway three seconds later.

"...I'm here."

Lucian looked at him.

"You weren't late."

"I know."

"I wanted everyone to appreciate the effort."

David laughed.

"You've changed."

"I've matured."

Castiel answered immediately.

"...Debatable."

June looked offended.

"...You know..."

"...I haven't even finished waking up."

"And you're already attacking me."

"It seemed efficient."

"It was rude."

"...Also efficient."

Even Lucian smiled.

David looked around at all of them.

White.

Black.

Silver.

Crimson.

Six different uniforms.

Six different weapons.

Six different personalities.

One squad.

Commander Vance emerged from the dormitory entrance.

Major Holt followed a step behind.

Both officers wore full deployment armor.

Commander Vance looked over Gamma Squad.

Then toward the other selected squads assembling across the courtyard.

Alpha.

Delta.

Epsilon.

Sigma.

Titan.

Vanguard.

Omega

Eight squads.

Forty-eight cadets.

The same cadets who had entered Kharos Vale during the previous mission.

The same squads that had fought through its jungles.

The same survivors who had helped force the planet's classification from Low Yellow...

To High Blue.

This time...

They were not returning for a competition.

They were returning to finish what they had started.

Commander Vance nodded once.

Satisfied.

"Form up."

Within seconds...

The eight squads stood in perfect formation.

Forty-eight cadets.

Every weapon secured.

Every piece of armor inspected.

Every face turned toward the path leading to the departure hangars.

Then...

Movement spread across the courtyard.

David looked toward the wide stone walkway.

The rest of the First-Year Class had gathered there.

Hundreds of cadets stood in two long lines stretching from Dormitory Building One toward the Academy's central gates.

None of them had been selected for the operation.

But every one of them had come to see the others leave.

The morning wind moved gently through the Academy banners hanging above the path.

For several moments...

No one spoke.

Then the first cadet raised a fist against his chest.

Another followed.

Then another.

Within seconds...

Every cadet lining the walkway stood at attention.

A unified salute.

David felt something tighten in his chest.

These were the same people they had trained beside.

Competed against.

Fought against in the Tournament.

Some had been rivals.

Others barely knew them.

Today...

None of that mattered.

One cadet near the front called out—

"Show them who we are!"

Another voice followed from farther down the line.

"Bring Kharos Vale home!"

Then another.

"Whitefall!"

The word spread.

Quietly at first.

Then louder.

"Whitefall!"

"Whitefall!"

"WHITEFALL!"

The chant rolled across the Academy courtyard.

Hundreds of voices.

One word.

One purpose.

June slowly looked around.

His usual smile faded into something quieter.

More sincere.

"...Well..."

He swallowed.

"...No pressure."

Mira smiled beside him.

"Only an entire Academy watching."

June glanced at her.

"...That was not helpful."

"It wasn't meant to be."

A faint grin returned.

"...You're spending too much time with Castiel."

Castiel answered from David's other side.

"...She's improving."

June looked at him.

"See?"

"That."

Despite the weight of the moment...

Gamma Squad laughed.

Just once.

Commander Vance stepped forward.

Her voice carried effortlessly across the silent formation.

"You have trained for this day since arriving at the Academy."

"You have learned."

"You have failed."

"You have adapted."

"You have grown."

Her eyes moved across all eight squads.

"Today..."

"You stop preparing."

"Today..."

"You become soldiers."

Silence filled the courtyard.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Commander Vance's expression softened almost imperceptibly.

Then she repeated the same words she had given them before their first deployment.

Only now...

They carried an entirely different weight.

"Bring each other home."

The eight squads struck their fists against their chests.

One unified response thundered across the courtyard.

"Yes, Commander!"

Commander Vance turned toward the hangars.

"Move out."

The formation began advancing.

Forty-eight cadets walked between the two long lines of their classmates.

Salutes remained raised as they passed.

David kept his eyes forward.

But he heard every voice.

"Good luck, Gamma!"

"Show them what First-Year can do!"

"Come back stronger!"

"Whitefall Kharos Vale!"

June leaned slightly toward David without breaking formation.

"...You know..."

"What?"

"I think they expect us to do something impressive."

David smiled.

"We'll try not to disappoint them."

June nodded thoughtfully.

"Good."

"Because I already waved at three people."

Lucian sighed.

"You were ordered to remain in formation."

"I remained in formation while waving."

"That doesn't improve it."

"Morale is important."

Castiel glanced toward June.

"...For them?"

June grinned.

"...For me."

Nyra laughed softly.

And together...

The eight selected squads continued toward the departure hangars while the Academy saluted their passage.
