Part 2 — Five Days Remaining
The morning disappeared beneath hours of relentless training.
Combat Hall Seven echoed with steel striking steel.
Wind.
Shadow.
Energy.
The rhythmic impacts had become almost hypnotic.
Commander Vance hadn't interrupted once.
She simply watched.
Observed.
Corrected only when absolutely necessary.
By late afternoon...
Sweat covered every member of Gamma Squad.
June collapsed onto the edge of the training platform.
"...I officially withdraw my earlier statement."
David looked over while removing one of his Claw Gauntlets.
"What statement?"
"...That I wanted another week off."
David smiled.
"You changed your mind?"
June pointed toward the obstacle course.
"...If every day is going to feel like this..."
"...I'm going to need another month."
Lucian walked past him.
"You'd ask for another after that."
"...Probably."
Nyra laughed softly.
"I don't think anyone would be surprised."
Mira handed June a water bottle.
"You should drink."
June accepted it.
"...See?"
"This is why you're my favorite."
David looked up.
"I thought I was your favorite."
June nodded thoughtfully.
"You were."
"Then she gave me water."
"...Fair."
Everyone laughed.
Across the room...
Commander Vance quietly watched from the observation platform.
Major Holt stepped beside her.
"They're improving."
Commander Vance never looked away from the arena.
"They're beginning to trust the equipment."
Major Holt folded his arms.
"And each other."
"They already trusted each other."
A faint smile appeared on Vance's face.
"Now they're trusting what the others can do."
Below them...
David and Nyra were sparring again.
David struck first.
Predator's Step activated.
Instead of following through...
He stopped.
Because he already knew...
Nyra would evade.
She did.
Wind Dance carried her around him in a graceful arc.
Before she completed her counterattack...
David had already repositioned.
Neither said a word.
They didn't need to.
Commander Vance noticed immediately.
"They're beginning to anticipate one another."
Major Holt nodded.
"Without speaking."
"Good squads communicate."
She watched David and Nyra complete another flawless exchange.
"Exceptional squads..."
"...don't have to."
---
On another platform...
Lucian faced three mechanical constructs alone.
The Bloodcrest Blade carved through the first with one decisive strike.
Crimson Momentum activated.
The second construct met him head-on.
Its reinforced shield shattered beneath the increased force.
The third attempted to flank him.
Lucian pivoted.
One clean slash.
The construct froze.
Powered down.
He calmly sheathed his weapon.
Not a wasted movement.
Not an unnecessary strike.
Major Holt smiled slightly.
"House Bloodthrone certainly trained him well."
Commander Vance nodded.
"They did."
"The Academy simply refined what was already there."
---
Across the hall...
Castiel moved through the obstacle course.
There were no explosive attacks.
No dramatic movements.
Just efficiency.
Every target fell.
One strike.
One step.
One enemy.
Shadow Rend detonated only when necessary.
He never used more energy than required.
June watched from a nearby platform.
"...Watching him fight is weird."
Mira looked over.
"Why?"
"It looks..."
"...Easy."
She smiled.
"It isn't."
"No."
"...That's what makes it impressive."
Castiel finished the final construct and quietly reset the course for the next cadet.
June blinked.
"...He even cleans up after himself."
David laughed.
"Cass likes things organized."
"...I'm starting to notice."
---
Mira stood at the center of another arena.
Six moving drones circled her.
They attacked without pattern.
Or so it seemed.
She never rushed.
Never panicked.
Never wasted movement.
One drone lunged.
She stepped aside before it moved.
Another attacked from behind.
She had already turned.
Twin blades flashed.
Both drones shut down almost simultaneously.
June watched in disbelief.
"...Does she ever get surprised?"
Nyra smiled.
"I've been wondering the same thing."
Mira calmly deactivated the remaining drones.
Only then did she answer.
"...Sometimes."
June folded his arms.
"I don't believe you."
"...That's alright."
---
The loudest arena belonged to June.
Not because he talked.
Because he refused to stop moving.
His new baton blurred through the air.
Acceleration Burst launched him across the platform.
He struck one construct.
Redirected into another.
Vaulted over a third.
Landed.
Immediately lost his footing.
"...Whoa—"
He stumbled three steps before regaining his balance.
Silence.
David looked over.
"...You meant to do that?"
June brushed imaginary dust from his sleeve.
"...Obviously."
Mira raised an eyebrow.
"...No."
"...You saw that?"
"I saw all of it."
"...I was hoping Predictability had an off switch."
She smiled.
"It doesn't."
Everyone laughed.
Even Commander Vance.
Just once.
Very quietly.
She looked down at Gamma Squad.
Six cadets.
Six completely different fighting styles.
Yet somehow...
Every hour they spent together made them stronger than the hour before.
She turned toward Major Holt.
"I've seen talented squads."
"So have I."
"I've seen disciplined squads."
Major Holt nodded.
"So have I."
Commander Vance watched David help June back to his feet after another spectacular miscalculation.
Nyra laughed.
Lucian shook his head.
Castiel quietly hid the smallest smile.
Mira simply waited for June's next sarcastic comment.
Commander Vance spoke softly.
"...But I've never seen a squad enjoy becoming stronger together."
Major Holt followed her gaze.
Neither spoke again.
They simply watched.
Because they both understood something.
Kharos Vale would test Gamma Squad's strength.
But it was this...
These moments.
These friendships.
That would keep them alive.
