Chapter 104 - Chapter 89 — Orders (Part 1 of 3)

Part 1

The Academy felt different.

Not because anything had changed.

The buildings were the same.

The instructors still crossed the courtyards carrying stacks of reports.

Cadets still hurried between classrooms.

Training fields echoed with the familiar sounds of wooden practice blades.

Everything looked exactly as it always had.

Yet...

Gamma Squad walked through it in silence.

Yesterday...

They had been reading letters.

Remembering family.

Laughing over June's endless collection of stuffed animals.

Today...

Each of them carried a black folder beneath one arm.

Stamped in silver.

**OPERATION: KHAROS VALE**

No one joked about it.

Not yet.

---

David walked at the front.

The Champion's Blade rested comfortably against his left hip.

The weight no longer felt unfamiliar.

It felt...

Expected.

Behind him...

Lucian walked with his usual calm confidence.

Castiel quietly reread portions of the deployment packet.

Mira carried a notebook filled with observations she'd already begun making.

Nyra looked ahead.

Focused.

June finally broke the silence.

"...You know..."

Everyone looked toward him.

"...This is weird."

Lucian raised an eyebrow.

"What is?"

June looked around the corridor.

"...Yesterday we were arguing over stuffed animals."

He glanced down at the folder in his hands.

"...Today we're going back to Kharos Vale."

Nobody answered immediately.

Because he wasn't wrong.

David smiled faintly.

"...Life changes quickly."

"It really does."

June sighed dramatically.

"I preferred yesterday."

Nyra nudged his shoulder.

"So did I."

Mira smiled.

"But..."

She looked toward David.

"...I think we're ready."

David wasn't sure he agreed.

He simply hoped she was right.

---

They reached the east wing of the Academy.

Unlike the classroom corridors...

This section was quiet.

Military quiet.

Officers walked these halls.

Not cadets.

Every door carried polished brass nameplates.

Command Offices.

Strategic Operations.

Military Liaison.

Field Intelligence.

At the very end of the corridor...

A pair of reinforced double doors stood closed.

Above them...

Large silver letters had been engraved into the stone.

**BRIEFING ROOM ONE**

Two Academy guards stood outside.

Both saluted as Gamma Squad approached.

David instinctively returned the salute.

One guard opened the doors.

"Gamma Squad."

"Commander Vance is expecting you."

---

The briefing room was enormous.

Far larger than any classroom.

Rows of tiered seating overlooked a circular tactical platform occupying the center of the room.

The walls themselves served as holographic projection screens.

Military officers quietly prepared equipment near the front.

Several instructors David recognized from field training spoke in hushed voices.

Major Holt stood near the central platform reviewing a digital tablet.

He looked up as Gamma Squad entered.

His expression remained unreadable.

But...

He nodded once.

Almost approvingly.

"Take your seats."

David led Gamma Squad to the front row.

As they sat...

June leaned toward him.

"...I think we're in trouble."

David smiled.

"...Why?"

"I've never seen this many officers in one room."

Lucian answered before David could.

"...You're seeing them because this isn't an Academy lesson."

"...It's a military briefing."

June's smile faded.

"...Right."

---

One by one...

The conversations around the room ended.

Every officer stood.

The side doors opened.

Commander Vance entered.

She wore her formal command uniform.

Dark navy.

Silver trim.

Every medal precisely aligned.

Behind her walked three senior commanders from the Planetary Defense Forces.

None spoke.

The atmosphere changed the instant she entered.

She stepped onto the central platform.

Her eyes moved across the room.

Then settled on Gamma Squad.

"Squad Leader Wyn."

David immediately stood.

"Yes, Commander."

Every member of Gamma Squad noticed it.

Not...

Cadet Wyn.

Not...

Champion.

Squad Leader.

Commander Vance looked directly at him.

"Report."

David felt every officer in the room watching him.

For only a second...

He hesitated.

Then training took over.

"Gamma Squad present and awaiting orders, Commander."

Vance nodded once.

"Very good."

She looked toward the rest of Gamma Squad.

"Be seated."

David sat.

June leaned over ever so slightly.

"...That sounded official."

David whispered back.

"...I think it was."

---

Commander Vance folded her hands behind her back.

"For the past week..."

"You have been celebrated."

"You have received honors."

"Awards."

"Recognition."

"Recruitment offers."

Her gaze swept across Gamma Squad.

"You earned every one of them."

A brief pause.

"But."

The single word echoed through the room.

"The Academy Tournament is over."

"The celebrations are concluded."

"The next time humanity remembers your names..."

"It will not be because of a tournament."

Silence settled over the briefing room.

Commander Vance continued.

"Yesterday..."

"You were students."

"Today..."

"You return to being soldiers."

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The atmosphere had completely changed.

Yesterday already felt very far away.

---

Commander Vance looked toward Major Holt.

"Lights."

The briefing room dimmed.

The circular tactical platform at the center of the room slowly came to life.

Blue light rose into the air.

A three-dimensional hologram formed above the platform.

David recognized it instantly.

Kharos Vale.

The planet slowly rotated before them.

It looked almost exactly as it had during their first deployment.

The continents were unchanged.

The mountain ranges.

The oceans.

The forests.

Nothing about the planet itself had dramatically changed.

Instead...

Information appeared beside the hologram.

PLANETARY THREAT ASSESSMENT

KHAROS VALE

HIGH BLUE TIER

Planetary Stability: 92%

June leaned forward.

"...Ninety-two percent."

Castiel studied the data.

"The stabilization efforts are succeeding."

Commander Vance nodded.

"They are."

She looked across the room.

"When Gamma Squad first deployed to Kharos Vale..."

"The planet stood on the edge of becoming a Yellow Tier world."

David remembered.

Entire regions overrun.

Monster populations exploding.

Every day they delayed...

The situation worsened.

Commander Vance continued.

"Thanks to the efforts of Academy cadets, Colonial Forces, and Planetary Defense Command..."

"Kharos Vale has stabilized."

"It remains a High Blue Tier planet."

Mira smiled.

"So we actually made a difference."

"You did."

Commander Vance answered.

"But our work is far from finished."

She touched the control panel.

The planet enlarged.

A tactical grid spread across its surface.

Hundreds of numbered sectors appeared.

Most glowed blue.

Others pulsed amber.

Several flashed crimson.

Major Holt stepped forward.

"These highlighted sectors remain under organized monster control."

Additional information appeared beside the hologram.

ACTIVE HOSTILE GRID SECTIONS

Grid B-12

Grid C-07

Grid D-19

Grid F-03

Grid H-09

Grid J-15

Dozens more continued down the list.

Every flashing sector represented another battlefield.

David leaned forward.

"...Those are the remaining strongholds."

Major Holt nodded.

"Correct."

The hologram zoomed toward Grid H-09.

Several large monster signatures appeared.

Surrounding them...

Hundreds of smaller contacts.

Commander Vance pointed toward the largest signatures.

"Apex predators."

"The rulers of each territory."

She touched the display.

The animation began.

One apex predator hunted nearby monsters.

Blue signatures disappeared.

Small glowing cores flowed into the larger creature.

The creature's signature expanded.

Its color slowly shifted.

Blue.

Then...

Yellow.

Another display appeared.

THREAT SIMULATION

CURRENT STATUS

High Blue Tier

↓

PROJECTED STATUS

Yellow Tier

Estimated Time: 4.7 Years

Silence filled the briefing room.

June stared at the display.

"...It evolved."

Major Holt nodded.

"Every apex predator consumes monster cores."

"As they grow stronger..."

"They produce stronger offspring."

"They dominate larger territories."

"The planetary ecosystem adapts around them."

Commander Vance folded her hands behind her back.

"If humanity does nothing..."

"The apex predators continue hunting."

"They continue evolving."

"The planet's threat level rises."

She changed the display.

The simulation continued.

Yellow.

↓

Red.

↓

Black.

The final image remained suspended above the room.

A Black Tier world.

Commander Vance spoke quietly.

"Humanity cannot allow that to happen."

The simulation disappeared.

The tactical grid returned.

Commander Vance looked toward Gamma Squad.

"The objective of this campaign is simple."

"Locate the apex predators controlling each hostile grid."

"Eliminate them."

She touched the display.

The largest signatures disappeared.

Immediately...

The surrounding monster contacts scattered.

Some fled.

Others broke into isolated groups.

Commander Vance continued.

"Without their apex predators..."

"The remaining monsters lose territorial organization."

"They become significantly easier to eliminate."

Military unit markers advanced across the hologram.

One by one...

The remaining monster contacts vanished.

When the final contact disappeared...

Grid H-09 changed color.

From crimson...

To blue.

Commander Vance looked around the room.

"This is how Kharos Vale will be reclaimed."

"One grid."

"One operation."

"One victory at a time."

A second display appeared.

PLANETARY RECLAMATION PROTOCOL

Phase One

Destroy apex predators.

Phase Two

Eliminate remaining hostile populations.

Phase Three

Secure the grid.

Phase Four

Transfer control to Colonial Development Corps.

As each phase completed...

Blue sectors gradually spread across the holographic planet.

Roads appeared.

Supply depots.

Research stations.

Settlements.

Commander Vance continued.

"As each grid is secured..."

"Civilian engineers move in."

"Permanent settlements are established."

"Supply routes expand."

"Humanity's control grows."

She paused.

"When every hostile grid has been reclaimed..."

"Kharos Vale will officially enter Whitefall."

Silence.

This time...

Everyone understood what Whitefall truly meant.

Not magic.

Not an overnight transformation.

Victory.

Complete planetary liberation.

Commander Vance enlarged one final section.

The hologram centered on a single flashing grid.

GRID H-09

Unlike the others...

It pulsed a darker crimson.

Military casualty markers surrounded it.

Destroyed outposts.

Failed expeditions.

Years of unsuccessful operations.

David frowned.

"...Commander?"

Commander Vance met his eyes.

"The mission Gamma Squad began during its first deployment..."

She allowed the silence to settle.

"...was never completed."

Another image appeared.

Reconnaissance photographs.

Drone scans.

Satellite imagery.

Every report pointed toward the same conclusion.

The apex predator controlling Grid H-09 remained alive.

Commander Vance looked directly at David.

"Gamma Squad."

"You know this terrain."

"You've survived it."

"You've already fought there."

She paused.

"For those reasons..."

"Grid H-09 has been assigned to your command."

David looked at the flashing grid.

Then at the five people sitting beside him.

For the first time since receiving his promotion...

The weight of being Squad Leader truly settled onto his shoulders.

"...Understood, Commander."

Commander Vance nodded once.

"Good."

"Because this time..."

"...you're not returning to survive."

"You're returning to reclaim a world."
