Chapter 3 - First step into the academy

The air inside the academy was different from anything Kael had ever felt. Magic pulsed through the hallways like a living river, brushing against every wall, floor, and ceiling. Students bustled in every direction—some laughing, some practicing, others staring coldly at newcomers.

Kael walked cautiously, clutching the straps of his worn bag. He had trained alone his entire life, but here… he realized how small he truly was. And yet, for the first time, fear did not grip him. Instead, a burning determination took its place.

"Don't be nervous," a calm voice said beside him. Kael turned to see a girl with silver hair and icy blue eyes smiling softly.

"I'm Luna Mirel," she said, bowing slightly. "You must be the new guy everyone is whispering about… Kael Varyn, right?"

Kael hesitated but nodded. "Yeah. That's me."

Her gaze was sharp, almost analyzing. "I saw your Awakening Ceremony. That… energy. I've never seen anything like it."

Kael frowned. "It's unstable."

She tilted her head. "Maybe. Or maybe it's just… different. You'll find out soon enough."

Before Kael could reply, a familiar voice rang out.

"Varyn!"

Drex. Always Drex. Always loud. His red eyes sparkled with both envy and curiosity. "You think that display of yours makes you special?" he sneered. "Everyone has a chance here. Don't get cocky."

Kael clenched his fists but said nothing. He had no intention of proving himself to Drex… yet.

The headmaster's voice echoed through the hall. "All new students, follow me. Your first task is a basic combat and control assessment. This will determine your initial ranking and placement."

Kael followed the line of students to a massive courtyard. The walls were enchanted, shimmering faintly to keep all students inside. In the center, wooden dummies, elemental targets, and several instructors awaited.

"Begin," one of the instructors barked.

Kael's heart raced. This was his first real chance to test his power. He stepped forward cautiously, energy coiling around his arms like a living shadow.

A dummy jumped forward, swinging a wooden arm at him. Kael instinctively absorbed a small part of the dummy's force, twisting it into a pulse of dark energy. The wooden dummy splintered, sending fragments flying across the courtyard.

Gasps echoed. Several instructors exchanged surprised glances.

Drex moved up behind him, sneering. "That's just luck! Watch this." Drex slammed his hands together, summoning a jet of fire that streaked toward a dummy. The flames tore through it with ease, but Kael noticed something different: the energy dissipated quickly, not lasting as long as his strange power had.

Kael smiled faintly. He didn't need to say anything.

"Next," Luna said softly, stepping beside him. She touched her hands together and a stream of ice formed, freezing a small dummy solid. "Control isn't just strength," she whispered. "It's precision."

Kael nodded. He focused again. The dark energy twisted around him, coiling into small tendrils that struck multiple targets at once. Each strike absorbed a little energy from the objects, feeding back into his core. A smile spread across his face. This… this was exactly how he had imagined using his power.

Several students stared openly. Whispers spread: "He's… different. Stronger than normal."

Drex's face darkened. "This isn't over, Varyn."

Kael ignored him. There were more tests to pass, more obstacles. He wasn't here to argue with Drex; he was here to grow stronger.

The final test was a simulation of a monster attack. A glowing portal opened in the center of the courtyard, and from it emerged a massive shadow creature. Its claws scraped the enchanted ground, sparks flying as it moved. Students scattered, some frozen in fear.

Kael didn't move.

This was the moment he had been training for—his first real battle in a hundred years. He focused, twisting his Abyss Core, feeling the energy surge and wrap around him. Dark, pulsing tendrils shot forward, striking the monster. Every strike absorbed energy, feeding his core. The monster roared, staggering under the assault.

Gasps of awe filled the courtyard. Even the instructors murmured among themselves.

Drex approached, flames dancing around his hands. "Let's see what you really can do," he said, charging at the monster. Kael watched carefully, timing his strikes. When Drex's fire hit, Kael absorbed part of it, redirecting it into the creature, amplifying the attack.

The monster shrieked and collapsed. The portal flickered and vanished. Silence followed.

Then came the whispers: "Impossible… that kid absorbed fire and dark energy… how?"

Kael exhaled slowly, the energy dissipating into a faint glow around his hands. He felt exhilarated. For the first time, he truly understood his power—and that he could control it better than anyone here expected.

But behind him, Drex's eyes burned with something darker than rivalry: jealousy.

Kael smiled faintly. This wasn't just a test. This was only the beginning.

And the academy was about to change everything.
