Chapter 7 - Before the distance

The pack was quieter than usual.

Word of the rogue attack had spread quickly, leaving behind a tension that clung to every conversation, every glance. Warriors moved in tighter patrols. Elders whispered in corners. Even the younger wolves seemed to sense that something larger than a simple skirmish was unfolding.

Aria stood near the western gate, watching the sun slowly dip toward the horizon.

He would leave soon.

The thought sat heavily in her chest.

She told herself it shouldn't matter. Kael Blackwell was still the heir of her family's greatest enemy. The bond between them was a complication — a dangerous one — and rejecting it was the only logical choice.

But logic had started to feel very small compared to everything else she was feeling.

Footsteps approached behind her.

She didn't turn right away.

"I wasn't sure you'd come," she said quietly.

"I wasn't sure you wanted me to."

His voice was calmer than she expected. Tired, maybe. Or careful.

When she finally faced him, she noticed he had already shifted back into travel leathers. A small pack was slung over his shoulder. He looked ready to leave.

Ready to walk out of her life as suddenly as he had entered it.

Something inside her tightened.

"This is better," she said, though the words felt hollow.

"The longer you stay, the worse it gets."

Kael studied her for a moment, as if weighing whether to argue.

"You were hurt," he said instead, his gaze dropping briefly to the fading cut on her arm.

"You should rest."

"It's nothing."

"It didn't look like nothing this morning."

Aria let out a soft breath, somewhere between a laugh and a sigh.

"Why do you care?" she asked.

"We're supposed to hate each other. Remember?"

"I remember," he said.

But he didn't sound convinced.

A cool breeze moved through the open gate, carrying the distant scent of forest and approaching night. The sky had turned a deep orange, the first stars beginning to appear.

Time was slipping away.

"You'll come back tomorrow?" she asked before she could stop herself.

The question surprised both of them.

Kael's brows lifted slightly.

"For the rejection," she added quickly.

He nodded once.

"If your father allows it."

They fell into silence again.

It wasn't uncomfortable. Just… heavy with things neither of them seemed ready to say.

Aria became aware of how close they were standing. Close enough that she could feel the warmth of his body. Close enough that her wolf stirred restlessly beneath her skin.

She told herself to step back.

She didn't.

"I don't know how to do this," she admitted after a moment.

"Pretend you don't exist. Pretend this bond isn't real."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"You don't have to pretend," he said.

"You just have to decide what matters more."

Her pack.

Her father.

Her destiny.

Or him.

The answer should have been obvious.

Instead, she felt her resolve slipping like sand through her fingers.

A strange impulse made her reach out.

Her hand brushed his wrist — a light, accidental touch.

The effect was immediate.

The bond flared to life between them, warm and electric. Aria's breath caught. Kael went still, every muscle tensing as if he were fighting the urge to pull her closer.

For a heartbeat, the world narrowed to just the two of them.

No war.

No packs.

No expectations.

Just the quiet certainty that something important was about to happen.

Then voices called from the watchtower.

Reality rushed back in.

Kael stepped away first.

"I should go," he said.

Aria nodded, though the movement felt stiff.

He turned toward the gate.

Each step he took seemed to stretch the invisible thread between them tighter… and tighter… until it almost hurt to breathe.

Just before he crossed the boundary, he stopped.

Without looking back, he said softly,

"Try to sleep tonight, Aria.

Tomorrow will not be easy."

Then he was gone.

Aria stood there long after darkness settled over the pack lands, listening to the silence he left behind.

And for the first time, she wondered if rejecting him would feel less like freedom… and more like loss.
