Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Incomplete Pattern

The structure didn't feel hidden anymore.

Now that Mateo had seen it—

it was impossible to ignore.

He stood just beyond the trees, eyes fixed on the stone.

Not large.

Not grand.

But deliberate.

Every edge.

Every angle.

Placed.

"…This wasn't meant to be seen from the front," Lila said quietly.

Mateo didn't answer.

He stepped to the side.

Then another.

Adjusted his position—

just enough—

The structure shifted.

Not physically.

But in the way it revealed itself.

What had looked like a fragment—

became something else.

"…It's connected," Mateo said.

Lila frowned. "To what?"

Mateo didn't respond.

Because he wasn't guessing.

He moved closer.

Slow.

Careful.

The ground dipped slightly beneath his step.

Subtle—

but intentional.

He stopped.

Looked down.

"…There's more underneath."

Lila's voice lowered. "That's not good."

Mateo crouched.

Pressed lightly against the edge of the stone.

Nothing.

He adjusted his hand.

Shifted his weight.

Pushed again—

The ground shifted.

Barely.

But enough.

Both of them froze.

"…Okay," Lila whispered. "That's not normal."

Mateo didn't respond.

Because now—

he could see it.

The structure extended downward.

Buried.

Deliberately hidden.

"…This is a chamber," he said.

Lila glanced around quickly.

The park was quieter now.

But not empty.

A guard stood farther down the path—

closer than before.

Watching.

"We don't have time," she said.

Mateo nodded.

"…Then we don't waste it."

He looked at the Sunstone.

Then at the structure.

Then back again.

This time—

he didn't move immediately.

Didn't assume.

Didn't rush.

"…If this is the second point…" he said slowly,

"…then it should connect to the first."

Lila frowned. "We don't even know where the first is."

Mateo nodded once.

"…Exactly."

He stepped back.

Scanning everything again.

The structure.

The ground.

The direction they had followed.

Something didn't sit right.

Mateo shifted his position.

Then again.

"…No."

Lila exhaled. "What now?"

Mateo pointed—

not at the structure—

but beyond it.

"…This isn't aligned."

"…What do you mean?"

He moved to the side.

Adjusted his angle—

and saw it.

The structure wasn't facing the same direction as the marker.

It was slightly rotated.

"…It's off," he said.

Lila stepped beside him.

"…Wait… yeah."

Mateo's gaze sharpened.

"…That's not a mistake."

He looked back at the marker.

Then at the structure.

Then between them.

"…They're not meant to line up directly."

Lila frowned. "Then what are they doing?"

Mateo didn't answer immediately.

He stepped back further.

Far enough to see both points in his mind.

The marker.

The structure.

Two points.

Not connected—

but related.

"…It's not linear," he said.

Lila crossed her arms. "Then what is it?"

Mateo looked down at the Sunstone.

The faint markings—

had changed again.

Not just lines.

Segments.

Incomplete shapes.

He exhaled slowly.

"…It's building something."

"…A map?" Lila asked.

Mateo hesitated.

"…Not exactly."

He looked between the two points again.

Then—

beyond them.

"…More like a framework."

A voice cut through the distance.

"Hey!"

Both of them froze.

The guard.

Closer now.

Watching them carefully.

"What are you doing there?" he called out.

Lila stepped closer to Mateo.

"We need to go."

Mateo didn't respond immediately.

Because something—

finally clicked.

Mateo froze.

"…No."

Lila turned. "Mateo—"

He looked between the marker and the structure—

then past them.

"…They're not clues," he said quietly.

A breath.

"…They're coordinates."

The guard took another step forward.

"Hey! Stay on the path!"

If they got reported—

this ended.

Right here.

"…And we only have two," Mateo continued.

Lila grabbed his arm. "Mateo, move."

He exhaled—

then nodded.

"Sorry, sir!" Lila called out quickly. "We were just looking for the exit!"

The guard didn't respond immediately.

He just watched them.

Long enough to matter.

Then—

"Stay on the main path."

"Yes, sir."

Lila didn't wait.

She pulled Mateo with her—

back toward the walkway.

Back toward the light.

Only when they were far enough—

did she let go.

"…You were about to get us reported," she said.

Mateo exhaled slowly.

But this time—

he wasn't uncertain.

"…We're missing points," he said.

Lila stared at him.

"…That's your takeaway?"

Mateo nodded.

"…This isn't a path."

He looked back once—

toward the structure.

"…It's a system of locations."

They slowed.

The city noise returned.

People passed.

Normal life resumed.

But something had shifted.

Mateo looked down at the Sunstone.

The markings—

still incomplete.

Waiting.

"…We only have part of it," he said.

Lila crossed her arms.

"…How many parts are there?"

Mateo didn't answer immediately.

Then—

quietly—

"…More than we thought."

Across the street—

a man lowered his phone.

"…He understands."

A pause.

"…Don't lose him."

Mateo looked ahead.

Not at the park.

Not at the structure.

At everything beyond it.

"…We're not solving this anymore," he said.

A breath.

"…We're building it."

And for the first time—

that felt more dangerous than anything before.
