Chapter 4 - THE HIDDEN CITY

Arin followed the girl through the glowing streets of Aetherion.

Every step felt unreal—like walking on air made of fractured seconds. The light bent around them, reflecting strange, impossible colors across his skin.

"Where are we going?" he asked, his voice trembling.

"To the Hidden City," she replied. "If we stay out here, the Time Guardians will notice us. And if the Chronarch sees you… well, you might not survive."

Arin swallowed hard. He could feel the weight of her words pressing into his chest. "Hidden City…?"

"Yes. A safe place. For now," she said. "But don't expect it to feel normal."

They moved in silence. The world around them shifted constantly. Buildings rose and fell in mid-motion. Streets stretched endlessly. Shadows bent into impossible angles. Every corner seemed alive, breathing, watching.

Finally, they arrived at a narrow alley, shimmering faintly. The girl pressed her hand against the wall. A soft pulse of light ran under her fingers. The wall melted away like liquid glass, revealing a tunnel.

Arin hesitated. "We're going in there?"

"Yes," she said firmly. "If you want to survive, you'll need to trust me."

He nodded, though his stomach churned. Together, they stepped through.

The Hidden City was unlike anything Arin had ever seen.

Buildings floated above canals of liquid time, glimmering with echoes of past and future moments. Streets twisted in impossible spirals, yet every path felt purposeful, like the city itself guided them.

People moved through the streets, but not like humans. Some walked backward, some shimmered like ghosts, some carried objects that bent and warped as they moved. Arin realized quickly that time in this place followed its own rules.

"Who… who are they?" he whispered.

"The residents," the girl said. "Rebels. People who escaped the Chronarch's control. They live here, hiding. Learning. Fighting back."

Arin's heart pounded. "Rebels… fighting…?"

"Yes," she said, eyes sharp. "The Chronarch is powerful. He bends time to his will. If he wants something, he takes it. People disappear. Lives are erased. Entire cities vanish. This is why we fight."

As she spoke, a sudden wave of energy surged through the streets. The ground beneath them trembled, and the air shimmered violently.

Arin stumbled. "What was that?!"

Before she could answer, a figure appeared in the air ahead. A boy, slightly older than Arin, hovered above the canal of liquid time. His hair floated as if in water. His eyes glowed with the same faint light as the girl's.

"You brought him," the boy said, voice strong but cautious. "You can see the fractures too, huh?"

Arin nodded slowly. "Yes… I think so. I don't understand it yet."

The boy landed gracefully. "Then you'll need to learn fast. Time here is dangerous. One mistake, one hesitation, and…" He let the words hang. "…you could disappear. Permanently."

Arin swallowed. He could feel the weight of the world pressing down, heavier than gravity itself.

The girl glanced at him. "This is Kairo. He'll help you understand. But be careful. He doesn't trust easily."

Kairo studied him, piercing eyes sharp and calculating. "The Chronarch knows you exist," he said. "That alone makes you a target. You can't hide, not here. You must either learn to control your gift… or die."

Arin felt a chill run through him. His gift. The fractures. The strange energy he had felt pulsing inside him since arriving.

"What gift?" he whispered.

"The one that lets you see time itself," Kairo said. "The one that shouldn't exist. That's why you're here. And why he'll come for you."

A chill ran down Arin's spine. He glanced at the girl. She nodded slightly, confirming what he already feared: there was no turning back.

The world outside the Hidden City shimmered and twisted. A deep, low hum resonated through the streets, like the heartbeat of something enormous, something alive.

Arin took a deep breath. He didn't understand Aetherion. He didn't understand his gift. He didn't understand the danger he was in.

But one thing was certain:

He was no longer safe.

And the Chronarch was coming.
