Chapter 2 - Summoned By Fate

Chapter 11 First Mission

Morning in Ardin arrived with noise.

Not the peaceful kind.

The loud, chaotic energy of a city filled with adventurers preparing for danger.

Lena woke to the sound of metal clanking outside the dormitory window.

She groaned and rolled over.

"…Why is everyone awake this early?"

A moment later she remembered.

Right.

Another world.

Adventurer guild.

Monsters.

The events of the previous day returned all at once.

Lena sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes.

Her arms still ached from training.

"…Kai wasn't kidding about that."

She swung her legs off the bed and grabbed the bronze guild badge sitting on the small wooden table.

The symbol engraved into it looked like a crossed sword and crystal.

Her official proof that she was now an F-rank adventurer.

Which still sounded ridiculous.

But apparently this world ran on ranks.

F to S. Newbie to legend.

And according to Mira, the guild receptionist, most adventurers never made it past C rank.

Lena sighed. "…Fantastic."

She got dressed quickly and stepped outside into the hallway. Several other new adventurers were already heading downstairs toward the guild hall. Lena followed. When she entered the main hall, the usual chaos had already started.

Dozens of adventurers crowded the quest boards. Merchants argued with guild clerks. Someone in the corner was loudly celebrating a completed mission. Lena spotted Kai near the quest board.

He stood slightly apart from the crowd, arms crossed as he studied the available jobs. His black cloak and mask made him stand out.

Still mysterious. Still quiet. Still impossible to read. Lena walked over. "Morning."

Kai glanced at her. "Morning."

She stretched her arms. "Please tell me we're not doing more training today."

Kai pointed at the board. "First mission."

Lena leaned closer. The paper he indicated read:

QUEST: Clearing Slime Nest – Grayveil Outskirts

Rank: F

Reward: 5 Silver

Lena blinked. "…Slimes?"

"Yes."

"Like… the squishy blobs from video games?"

Kai nodded.

"That's actually comforting." She turned toward him. "So we're killing jelly monsters."

"Basically."

"Great." Lena grabbed the quest paper off the board with confidence she absolutely did not feel.

The outskirts of Ardin looked completely different from the city itself.

Rolling grassy fields stretched across the land.

Small forests dotted the horizon.

Occasionally adventurer parties passed them on the road.

Some are friendly.

Some are suspicious.

Lena walked beside Kai quietly for a while.

Eventually she asked the obvious question.

"…So."

"So." "How dangerous are slimes?"

Kai thought about it. "For beginners?" "Yes."

"Very." She groaned.

"Fantastic."

They found the slime nest near a small rocky hill.

The ground was covered in patches of glowing blue liquid.

Kai crouched slightly and inspected the area.

"Stay behind me."

"Already planning on it."

The first slime appeared seconds later.

It oozed out from behind a rock.

A translucent blue creature roughly the size of a large dog.

It made a strange bubbling noise as it moved toward them.

Lena stared.

"…Okay that's gross."

Kai drew his sword.

"Watch carefully."

The slime lunged.

Kai sidestepped easily and sliced through it.

The creature split apart instantly, dissolving into harmless blue liquid.

Lena blinked.

"…That looked easy."

Kai pointed toward the hill.

More slimes began sliding down the slope.

At least twenty of them.

"…Never mind."

The battle was messy.

Slimes weren't fast.

But they were unpredictable.

They bounced.

They stretched.

And they occasionally spat acidic liquid.

Lena swung her training sword wildly at the first one that reached her.

The blade barely cut through the gelatinous body.

"…Why are they so sticky?!"

Kai blocked two slimes approaching from behind her.

"Focus."

"I am focusing!"

Another slime jumped at her.

Lena instinctively ducked.

Kai sliced it out of the air.

"Try aiming for the core."

"…The what?"

Kai pointed as another slime approached.

Inside the creature's body floated a glowing blue sphere.

"The core."

Lena gripped her sword. "Okay."

The slime lunged.

She stepped forward and stabbed directly into the center.

The core shattered.

The creature dissolved instantly.

Lena blinked. "…Oh."

Kai nodded slightly.

"Good."

Within minutes the remaining slimes were gone.

Lena collapsed onto the grass breathing heavily.

"…First mission complete."

Kai wiped his blade clean.

"You did well."

She smiled tiredly.

"Don't sound so surprised."

But neither of them noticed something watching from the nearby forest.

A figure in a black robe stood hidden between the trees.

Its glowing red eyes studied Kai carefully.

"…A summoner."

The cultist slowly disappeared into the shadows. Chapter 11 END.

Chapter 12Quiet Victories

The guild hall was louder than usual when they returned.

Several adventurer groups had completed quests at the same time.

Lena pushed through the crowd toward the main desk.

Mira looked up and smirked.

"Well look who survived."

Lena dropped the slime cores onto the counter.

"Proof."

Mira inspected them briefly.

"Nice work."

She handed over a small pouch.

"Five silver."

Lena opened it.

"…This is real money?"

"Yes."

She turned to Kai.

"We just got paid to kill slime jelly."

Kai shrugged.

"Welcome to adventuring."

Later that evening they sat outside a small street restaurant.

Lena had insisted they celebrate their first mission.

Two bowls of steaming noodle soup sat in front of them.

She took a bite.

"…Oh my god this is amazing."

Kai smiled faintly beneath his mask.

"Good food helps morale."

Lena leaned back in her chair.

"…You know something?"

"What?"

"This almost feels normal."

Kai didn't respond immediately.

"Almost."

She looked at him thoughtfully.

"You're still weird though."

Kai raised an eyebrow.

"How?"

"You're hiding your face."

"…Yes."

"And you never talk about yourself."

"…Correct."

She smirked. "Mysterious."

Kai shook his head. But inside… He felt something strange.

Comfort.

Something he hadn't felt around Lena since before everything fell apart on Earth.

Chapter 13 The Dungeon Gate

Three days later the guild posted a new beginner mission.

Lena stared at the board excitedly.

"…Dungeon exploration?"

Kai folded his arms.

"You're enthusiastic."

"Of course I am."

She pointed at the quest description.

RANK F–E

Investigate newly opened dungeon cave

Lena grinned.

"This is literally the start of every fantasy adventure ever."

Kai sighed.

"Which usually means it's dangerous."

She shrugged.

"Worth it."

The dungeon entrance looked like a simple cave carved into a cliffside.

But magic radiated from it.

A faint purple glow pulsed along the stone walls.

Lena shivered slightly.

"…This place feels creepy."

Kai nodded.

"Stay close."

They stepped inside.

The air immediately grew colder.

Water dripped from the cave ceiling.

Echoes bounced strangely through the tunnels.

Then something moved in the darkness.

A creature emerged from behind a rock.

This one looked like a humanoid lizard.

Green scales.

Sharp claws.

Yellow eyes.

Lena whispered.

"…That's definitely not a slime."

Kai drew his sword.

"Lizardman."

The creature hissed and charged.

Kai blocked its claws and countered instantly.

But another one appeared behind them.

Then another.

Lena grabbed her sword.

"…Okay this is getting serious."

The battle began. Chapter 13 END.

Chapter 14 Shadows Watching

They defeated the lizardmen after a brutal fight.

Lena leaned against the cave wall breathing hard.

"…Why do these things always travel in groups?"

Kai wiped blood from his blade.

"Survival."

She looked around the dungeon carefully.

"…Do you feel that?"

Kai nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Something else was in the cave.

Something watching them.

A faint chanting sound echoed deeper inside the dungeon.

Lena frowned.

"…That doesn't sound like monsters."

Kai's expression darkened beneath the mask.

Because he recognized it.

Cult magic.

Chapter 14 END.

Chapter 15 The First Sign

They followed the chanting deeper into the dungeon.

Eventually the tunnel opened into a large underground chamber.

Strange symbols covered the walls.

Dark candles burned around a stone altar.

Three figures in black robes stood around it.

Lena whispered. "…Cultists?"

Kai's grip tightened on his sword. "Yes."

One of the robed figures turned slowly.

Its glowing red eyes locked onto Kai.

"…So the rumors were true." The cultist smiled beneath his hood.

"The summoner of Ardin walks among us."

Lena glanced at Kai. "…They know you?"

Kai stepped forward calmly. "Stay behind me."

The cultist raised his hand.

Dark magic swirled through the chamber.

"Kill them."

The battle exploded instantly.

And the real danger of Aetheris had finally revealed itself. Chapter 15 END.

Chapter 16 Dark Ritual

The underground chamber pulsed with dark energy.

Black candles flickered violently as the cultists began chanting in a language Lena had never heard before. The symbols carved into the stone floor glowed faintly purple.

Lena tightened her grip on the sword Kai had given her.

"…I really hate cultists."

Kai didn't respond. His focus was entirely on the three figures standing near the altar.

Something about them felt wrong. Not just dangerous. Unnatural.

The cultist in the center stepped forward slowly, his hood falling slightly back to reveal pale skin and glowing red eyes.

"The summoner of Ardin," he said with eerie calm. "We wondered when we would finally meet you."

Lena glanced at Kai. "…You're famous?"

Kai ignored the question.

"What are you doing here?" The cultist smiled faintly.

"Preparing the way."

"For what?"

The man tilted his head. "For the Devourer."

Lena frowned. "…That sounds bad."

Kai stepped forward. "You won't finish that ritual."

The cultist laughed softly. "You misunderstand."

He raised his hand. "We already have."

The symbols on the ground suddenly flared to life.

The chamber trembled.

Something began moving beneath the stone floor.

Kai's expression hardened.

"Lena." "Yeah?" "Run."

She shook her head instantly. "Not happening."

The stone altar cracked. Dark energy burst outward. A monstrous creature crawled from the ritual circle. Its body looked like a massive spider made of shadow and bone. Eight legs scraped across the stone floor as it screeched violently.

Lena took a step back. "…Okay that is definitely the worst thing I've seen since arriving here."

The cultist smiled. "Behold." "Our first offering to the abyss."

The creature lunged.

Kai moved instantly. His sword flashed.

The monster's leg was severed before it reached Lena. But the creature didn't fall. Instead it screeched louder and attacked again.

Kai raised his right hand. The summoning mark ignited. "Fenris."

Light erupted from the ground.

The massive white wolf appeared between them and the creature.

Fenris slammed into the monster with explosive force.

The chamber shook from the impact.

Lena blinked.

"…Still the coolest thing ever."

The cultists continued chanting.

Dark energy flowed into the creature, strengthening it.

Kai noticed immediately.

"They're feeding it power."

"Can we stop them?"

"Yes."

"Good."

Lena charged one of the cultists before she could reconsider the decision.

Her sword swung clumsily but determinedly.

The cultist blocked her strike with a curved dagger.

"…Pathetic."

Lena kicked him directly in the stomach.

"Shut up."

Meanwhile Fenris battled the monster across the chamber.

The creature's claws scraped across the stone floor as it tried to overwhelm the spirit wolf with sheer size.

Kai joined the fight.

His blade sliced through the creature again and again.

But the monster kept regenerating.

"Damn it."

The cultists were still chanting.

Kai realized the truth.

"As long as the ritual continues…"

"…it won't die."

Lena shouted across the room.

"Then we stop the ritual!"

Kai nodded.

"Fenris!"

The spirit wolf lunged forward again, pinning the creature against the far wall.

Kai rushed the altar.

The cultist leader stepped in his path.

"You will not interfere."

Dark magic exploded from his hands.

Kai blocked the attack with his sword.

The impact blasted both of them across the chamber.

The cultist laughed.

"Impressive."

"But you're too late."

The ritual circle glowed brighter.

The monster roared louder.

Kai wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.

Then he did something he hadn't planned to do.

He summoned another guardian.

"Rex."

Shadow erupted across the chamber.

The air itself seemed to darken.

A massive black wolf stepped from the swirling shadows.

Red eyes burned like embers.

Rex.

The spirit's presence alone made the cultists hesitate.

The leader's smile faded.

"…A shadow guardian."

Kai pointed toward the monster.

"Destroy it."

Rex didn't hesitate.

The shadow wolf lunged with terrifying speed.

Claws of pure darkness ripped through the creature's body.

Fenris joined the attack.

Ice and shadow collided with the monster simultaneously.

The creature screamed.

The ritual circle cracked.

And the entire chamber exploded with light.

When the dust settled…

The monster was gone.

So were the cultists.

Only fading dark magic remained behind.

Lena slowly lowered her sword.

"…Did they just escape?"

Kai nodded grimly.

"Yes."

She groaned.

"I hate when villains do that."

Kai looked down at the broken ritual circle.

His expression darkened.

Because this wasn't just a random cult activity.

This was preparation.

Something much bigger was coming.

Chapter 17 Unanswered Questions

They returned to Ardin late that night.

The guild hall was quieter than usual.

Only a few adventurers remained inside.

Mira looked up when they entered.

"…You two look like hell."

Lena collapsed into a nearby chair.

"Dungeon cultists."

Mira sighed.

"…Again?"

Kai nodded.

"They were performing a ritual."

"What kind?"

Kai hesitated.

"…Abyss magic."

The room went silent.

Mira's expression immediately grew serious.

"…That's not good."

"No."

Lena glanced between them.

"Okay I feel like I missed something."

Mira leaned against the desk.

"The Abyss Cult is dangerous."

"How dangerous?"

Kai answered quietly.

"Apocalypse level."

Lena blinked.

"…Fantastic."

Later that night Lena sat alone on the dormitory balcony.

The twin moons hung in the sky again.

She stared at them thoughtfully.

Her mind replayed the battle in the dungeon.

Kai fighting.

Fenris and Rex destroying that monster.

And the way the cultists reacted when they saw him.

"…They knew him."

She leaned back in her chair.

"…Who are you really, Ash?"

Chapter 18Training Harder

The next morning Kai pushed Lena harder than ever during training.

Their swords clashed repeatedly.

"Again," Kai said.

Lena swung. He blocked. "Again." She attacked faster.

Kai countered easily. "Again."

She groaned. "Do you ever get tired?"

"No."

"That's unfair."

Kai stepped forward and corrected her stance again. "You're improving." "Slowly." "Progress is progress."

Lena wiped sweat from her forehead. "…You're different today."

Kai glanced at her. "How?"

"More serious." He didn't respond.

But Lena could tell something was bothering him.

Finally she asked the question. "…Those cultists yesterday."

"Yes." "They knew you."

Kai paused.

"Maybe." "Maybe?"

"They might've recognized the summoning mark."

Lena frowned. "…You're not telling me everything."

Kai didn't deny it. Because she was right.

Chapter 19

A Familiar Feeling

That evening they walked through the market district. Lanterns illuminated the streets. Merchants called out deals. Musicians played cheerful melodies.

Lena suddenly stopped walking. "…You know something?"

Kai looked at her. "What?"

"You remind me of someone." His chest tightened.

"Oh?"

She nodded slowly. "Someone from Earth."

Kai remained silent.

"He was important to me." Lena stared at the glowing lanterns drifting into the sky. "…We used to talk all the time."

Kai swallowed. "What happened?"

She laughed quietly. "He screwed up."

Kai's heart felt heavy. "…What did he do?"

"He told someone a secret I trusted him with."

Kai looked away. "…Did he regret it?"

"Probably." She shrugged.

"But it doesn't matter."

"Why not?"

"Because some mistakes change everything."

Kai didn't speak.

Because she was right.

Chapter 20

Storm Approaching

High above Ardin… In a hidden tower far outside the city… The Abyss Cult gathered once more.

The leader knelt before a massive dark crystal. "The summoner interfered."

A deep voice echoed from within the crystal. "Irrelevant."

The cultist bowed his head. "The ritual continues?"

"Yes." The voice grew colder.

"Prepare the next phase."

"Understood." The cultist stood. His glowing red eyes turned toward the distant lights of Ardin. "…Soon." "Very soon."

Kai stood on the roof of the guild hall later that night. Fenris sat beside him. Rex remained hidden in the shadows.

Kai stared at the horizon. He could feel it. The shift in the world. The beginning of something terrible. Fenris spoke softly through their bond. The storm approaches.

Kai nodded. "Yes."

But the thing he feared most…

Wasn't the cult.

It wasn't the coming war.

It was the moment Lena would finally learn the truth.

And the question he couldn't answer.

Would she forgive him?

Or walk away again.
