Chapter 8 - Collision of runes

Bran had barely left the paper mill when the system pulsed sharply, more urgent than ever. The familiar hum under his skin vibrated insistently, warning him of danger ahead. He flexed his fingers, feeling the lingering heat of Ember Strike and Fire Cyclone as his coat swayed in the evening breeze.

"Quest Available: Investigate Threat. Objective: Identify and confront hostile rune user. Reward: Rune Points +5, Knowledge +1."

A sense of foreboding settled in his chest. Another hostile user? He had suspected others existed, but he hadn't expected a direct confrontation so soon—and certainly not one that would push him to his limits.

The streets of the Bottom Tier were quiet, the flickering neon lights casting long shadows across cracked pavement. Bran's pulse quickened as he followed the system's subtle pull into a narrow industrial alley. And there he saw him.

Perched atop a stack of crates was a figure shrouded in energy, blue sparks crackling along his limbs. His eyes glowed an icy, calculating light, and the swirling air around him hinted at raw, unrefined power—but disciplined.

"Kael," the system whispered.

The figure dropped to the ground, landing lightly, and the alley suddenly felt smaller. He moved with speed Bran hadn't yet mastered. Without warning, Kael attacked—a sharp, controlled wind slicing toward Bran, forcing him to dodge backward.

Bran summoned his runes instinctively:

"Ignis + Ventus!"

The flames erupted, spinning in a tornado that collided with Kael's wind. Sparks and debris filled the air, but Kael's movements were precise, almost effortless. Another strike came, stronger and faster than Bran expected. The wind tore through his side, sending him crashing into the crates with a sharp pain radiating across his ribs.

"Health decreasing. Player injured," the system warned.

Bran struggled to his feet, coughing lightly, blood seeping from a cut on his arm. Kael's eyes narrowed, assessing him like prey. "You're… slower than I expected," Kael said, voice calm but dangerous. "Still, you have potential."

Bran's pulse raced, adrenaline masking some of the pain. "Why are you attacking?" he shouted. "What do you want?"

Kael smirked. "Power. Knowledge. Survival. But also… testing. You're not ready for this world yet. Consider this a lesson."

Another strike slammed into Bran's shoulder, and he stumbled, barely keeping his footing. The alley echoed with the roar of clashing elements—fire, wind, and raw force. Bran realized he was outmatched. Every strike Kael made pushed him closer to defeat. The system pulsed:

"Adapt. Observe. Do not give up. Every failure is a lesson for survival."

Bran gritted his teeth, focusing on Ember Strike. He blocked one of Kael's attacks, twisted, and tried to counter—but Kael was faster. Another powerful blow caught him in the side, knocking him to the ground. Pain shot through his body, his vision blurred, and he realized he could not win this fight… not yet.

Kael loomed above him, ready to finish the encounter, but then a low rumble shook the city. The neon lights flickered violently, and a government broadcast cut across all public channels:

"Attention citizens of Earth. Portals to unknown worlds have appeared globally. Hostile creatures have emerged. Special containment units, trained in extraordinary abilities, are being deployed. Citizens are advised to remain indoors and follow all safety protocols."

Kael's expression shifted. His eyes narrowed, and for a moment, Bran thought he might strike again—but then Kael stepped back, almost reluctantly. "Looks like… bigger things are happening," he said. "We'll meet again."

Before Bran could respond, Kael vanished into the shadows, leaving him bruised, bleeding, and shaken. Bran tried to steady himself, taking deep breaths, the hum of the system reminding him of the hidden lessons embedded in every encounter.

Pain radiated through his limbs as he made his way home, ignoring the ache in his ribs and the cuts across his arms. All that mattered was Lina. He had to make sure she was safe.

Bursting through the apartment door, Bran nearly collided with her. Lina's eyes widened as she took in his injuries—the blood, the bruises, the fatigue etched across his face.

"Bran! What happened?!" she exclaimed, rushing to support him.

Bran hesitated, then decided it was time. He couldn't hide the truth any longer. "It's… the game," he said, voice strained. "The Runic System… it's real. Some people… some users have powers. Others… they're dangerous. And I… I fought one today. I got hurt."

Lina stared at him, disbelief and concern warring across her face. "You're serious?" she whispered.

He nodded. "I didn't want to tell you… because it's dangerous. But now you need to know, for your own safety."

Her hand brushed against his wound, and suddenly, a faint blue glow spread across her palm. Bran's eyes widened. "Lina… what—?"

"I… I don't know," she said, eyes wide in shock. "I thought it was just the game… but when I was playing, something… happened. I can feel it. I can… control it."

The hum of latent energy filled the room. Lina's presence, once ordinary and grounding, now pulsed with potential. Bran realized then that the system had chosen her too—her awakening could change everything.

For the first time, he saw both the weight of responsibility and the glimmer of hope. Lina's powers, his own growing abilities, and the lessons the system had been forcing upon him—they were all pieces of something far bigger. And now, with Kael out there, rogue users still testing their limits, and portals opening across the globe, the stakes had escalated from dangerous to catastrophic.

Bran carefully pressed his hand against her glowing palm that was soothing to touch. "We'll figure this out," he said, voice low but resolute. "Together."

Lina nodded, a mixture of fear and determination in her eyes. The room hummed with their combined energy, a quiet but undeniable promise that the coming battles—against rogue rune users, invading beasts, and the unknown forces beyond the portals—would demand everything they had learned, and more.

Outside, the city shivered under the glow of emergency lights, distant roars echoing through the streets. The system pulsed faintly in Bran's mind, whispering its silent, inscrutable guidance. Every choice, every action, every fight had been preparing him—and now Lina—for the challenges that were only just beginning.
