Chapter 8 - THE FIRST EVENT

VIVIAN'S POV

The closet is a trap.

Vivian stands in front of it, surrounded by designer dresses she didn't choose, trying to find something that doesn't scream "I'm a fake." The tech summit starts in three hours. Kade will be expecting her downstairs looking like she belongs in his world.

She doesn't. She belongs in a garage eating ramen, not wearing clothes that cost more than her monthly rent used to be.

Mrs. Chen appears in the doorway like she's been waiting for this moment. The housekeeper has kind eyes and the practiced ability to not judge rich people's problems.

"Mr. Thorne suggested the emerald," Mrs. Chen says gently. "He says it suits your coloring."

Vivian pulls down the dress Mrs. Chen is pointing to. It's beautiful and terrifying. Deep green silk that probably costs more than Vivian made in three months at her startup. She holds it up and realizes her hands are shaking.

"It's just a dress," Mrs. Chen says, but they both know that's not true.

Twenty minutes later, Vivian stands in front of the mirror and barely recognizes herself.

The dress fits perfectly. Of course it does. The makeup is subtle but somehow makes her look awake and alive instead of exhausted and terrified. Her hair is down, styled in waves that probably took Mrs. Chen longer to create than Vivian would have thought possible.

She looks like someone who belongs in Kade's world.

She looks like a lie.

"You look beautiful," Mrs. Chen says from behind her.

Vivian wants to tell her the truth. That she's terrified. That she has no idea how to do this. That she's going to walk downstairs and ruin everything because she doesn't know how to be anyone other than herself.

Instead she just nods.

When she walks downstairs, Kade waits by the door in a black tuxedo that probably costs more than her entire wardrobe combined. He's been checking his phone, looking distracted, looking cold. Then he looks up and sees her.

He goes very still.

For a moment, maybe two, he doesn't move. Doesn't speak. Just watches her walk down the stairs like she's something that requires careful observation. His eyes track every movement, taking in the dress, the hair, the makeup, the transformation of the girl who was barefoot on his balcony a week ago.

"You look presentable," he says.

Vivian fights the urge to snap at him. Fights the urge to ask if that's supposed to be a compliment. Instead she forces out words that sound polite.

"Thank you."

The car ride is silent except for the sound of traffic and the occasional radio update about the event. Kade checks his phone. Vivian watches the city pass outside the window. Neither of them speaks.

She can feel him watching her.

When they arrive at the venue, photographers are already waiting. Cameras. Flashes. Questions shouted from every direction.

"Kade, who is she?"

"Mr. Thorne, is this a new relationship?"

"Are you finally moving on?"

The questions come at them like weapons. Kade's hand settles at her back, warm through the thin silk of her dress. Possessive. Protective. She's not sure which one scares her more.

They walk the red carpet and Vivian keeps her spine straight even though every camera flash feels like it's burning her skin. She's being documented. Being questioned. Being sized up by people who will go home and Google her name and find nothing but scandals and failure.

Kade leans down slightly, his mouth close to her ear so only she can hear.

"Smile," he murmurs. "You look like you're facing execution."

"I feel like I am," she whispers back.

"Good. Fear keeps you sharp."

She doesn't know if that's advice or a threat or just an observation about who he is and what he expects from people.

Inside the venue, everything changes.

The tech summit is filled with billionaires and entrepreneurs and people who matter in ways that regular people don't. The moment Vivian and Kade walk in, conversations pause. Eyes shift. Whispers rise like smoke.

Everyone is looking at them.

Vivian wants to disappear. Wants to find a bathroom and hide until this is over. Instead she lifts her chin and lets Kade guide her through the crowd like she has every right to be here.

"Kade, good to see you," a man in an expensive suit says, approaching them. "It's been what, two years?"

"Three," Kade says flatly. "Since the last acquisition conference."

"Still acquiring then. Good man." The man's eyes shift to Vivian. "And who is this?"

"Vivian Lawson. Vivian, this is Richard Chen. He runs a venture capital firm downtown."

Richard extends his hand. Vivian shakes it, trying not to think about how many powerful hands she's shaken today. How many people are wondering who she is and why Kade Thorne brought her.

"The name is familiar," Richard says, studying her face. "Did we meet at Stanford?"

Vivian's throat goes tight. She didn't go to Stanford. She went to a state school on scholarships, working three jobs, surviving on coffee and determination. This man went to Stanford. This man is someone who belongs in rooms like this.

"No," she says quietly. "Public university."

"Right, right." He's already losing interest, already looking past her to Kade. "We should grab drinks sometime. I have some acquisition targets you might be interested in."

Kade nods and Richard moves on, having extracted what he needed from this interaction. Which was apparently to confirm that Kade is still acquiring things and that Vivian is not worth his time.

Throughout the evening, the same pattern repeats. Men approach Kade. Ask about his business. Look at Vivian with mild curiosity. Move on. She becomes invisible while standing directly in front of them.

Except Kade keeps touching her.

His hand at her back. His fingers brushing her arm. His body angled toward her even when he's talking to other people. Like he's reminding everyone that she belongs to him. Like he's marking territory.

It should be gross. It should feel possessive in a way that makes her skin crawl. Instead it feels like the only real thing happening in this room full of people performing versions of themselves.

By the end of the night, Vivian's feet hurt and her face hurts from smiling and she's learned that she's completely invisible when attached to someone powerful.

On the car ride home, Kade finally speaks.

"You did well tonight."

"Nobody knew who I was," she says.

"Exactly. You didn't draw attention. You didn't embarrass yourself or me. You played the part."

Vivian looks at him. "Is that supposed to be a compliment?"

"It's supposed to be an observation." He adjusts his tie, and for the first time she notices he looks tired. "By next week, people will know your name. They'll do background checks. They'll find articles about the embezzlement charges."

"Will that be a problem?"

"No. Because by then, the narrative will have already changed." He meets her eyes in the darkness of the car. "My legal team is filing motions to dismiss. New evidence is surfacing. Garrett and Sloane's fraud is becoming very public, very messy."

"How is that possible? It's only been a week."

"Money moves fast, Vivian. I told you that."

The car stops at a red light and Kade's phone buzzes. He checks it, and something changes in his expression. Something gets harder.

"What?" Vivian asks.

He doesn't answer immediately. Just sets the phone down carefully like it might detonate.

"Your mother called my office," he says slowly. "She got your number from my assistant. She's asking why you're not returning her calls."

Vivian's heart stops. "What did you tell her?"

"That you would call her back. That you've been busy adjusting to your new relationship with me."

"Kade..."

"Your mother is smart, Vivian. She's going to figure out that something is wrong if you keep avoiding her." He turns to face her fully. "We need to visit her tomorrow. You're going to tell her that you're dating me. That we met at the gala. That it's serious and that's why you've been distant."

"She'll never believe that. She'll see right through it."

"Then you better become a better liar." His voice is cold. Clinical. "Because if your mother starts asking questions, if she starts investigating why you suddenly have money and why you're living with a billionaire, this entire arrangement falls apart."

The light turns green.

The car moves forward and Vivian realizes something that makes her blood go cold.

Kade isn't worried about his reputation or his company if this arrangement becomes public.

He's worried about her.

And the fact that he's worried means something changed. Something shifted from the moment he brought her into his penthouse.

She's no longer just an arrangement.

She's become something he needs to protect.

Which means she's also become something he can use against her.
