Chapter 5: A Name Worth Noticing
Morning came again.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
Tae Kook opened his eyes slowly.
"…Strange."
Usually by now—
Ae Rin would be shouting.
Running.
Breaking something.
"…Did she oversleep?"
He sat up, stretching lightly.
His gaze drifted—
Automatically—
To the locked drawer beside his bed.
Still there.
Still untouched.
"…Good."
He stood and got ready.
Same routine.
Same calm.
Same control.
But—
As he buttoned his shirt—
His mind wandered.
"…You skipped lunch."
He paused.
"…I noticed."
A small frown.
"…Why did she notice?"
He clicked his tongue softly.
"…Irrelevant."
And yet—
He chose his clothes more carefully today.
Downstairs—
Ae Rin sat quietly.
Eating.
Tae Kook stopped at the entrance.
"…You're quiet."
She looked up.
Smiled.
"Good morning, Kooky."
He narrowed his eyes.
"…What did you do?"
"Nothing."
"…I don't believe you."
"You should."
A pause.
"…You won't."
Their mom walked in.
"You two are early today."
Ae Rin nodded happily.
"We're going to school together!"
Tae Kook blinked.
"…We are?"
She grabbed his sleeve.
"We are."
"…No, we're not."
"Yes, we are."
"…Why?"
She leaned closer.
Whispered—
"…Because I want to see her again."
Silence.
Tae Kook slowly turned his head.
"…You're not coming."
"I am."
"No."
"Yes."
"…You're impossible."
"I know."
School
The gates opened.
Students walked in.
Same noise.
Same routine.
But today—
Tae Kook noticed it more.
Or maybe—
He was just looking for someone.
"…Annoying," he muttered.
Ae Rin walked beside him, scanning everything like a detective.
"…Target not visible yet," she whispered.
"…Stop talking like that."
"I'm serious."
"…That's the problem."
They entered the classroom.
Tae Kook took his usual seat.
Near the window.
Ae Rin hid outside again.
"…Best seat for observation," she noted.
The classroom filled.
Slowly.
Then—
The door opened.
She walked in.
Same as always.
Quiet.
Unbothered.
Tae Kook didn't turn immediately.
But—
His eyes shifted.
Just slightly.
Enough.
She walked to her seat.
Two rows ahead.
Sat down.
Opened her book.
Like yesterday never happened.
"…Consistent," he thought.
"Alright, class!" the teacher called.
"Settle down!"
Attendance began.
Names were called.
One by one.
"…Kim Tae Kook."
"Here."
A pause.
Then—
"…Han Soo Min."
"…Here."
Her voice.
Soft.
Clear.
Simple.
Tae Kook's fingers tapped lightly on the desk.
"…Han Soo Min."
The name settled quietly in his mind.
Not forced.
Not repeated.
Just… remembered.
Outside—
Ae Rin's eyes widened.
"…Soo Min."
She grinned.
"…Now we're getting somewhere."
Break Time
The classroom returned to noise.
Students moved around.
Talked.
Shared snacks.
Tae Kook stayed seated.
But not for long.
He stood up.
Walked forward.
Stopped—
Right beside her desk.
Han Soo Min looked up.
No surprise.
"…What is it?" she asked.
Tae Kook didn't sit.
Didn't lean.
Just stood.
"…Your name."
A pause.
"…I heard it."
She blinked once.
"…That's usually how names work."
A small silence.
Then—
"…Han Soo Min," he repeated.
Not questioning.
Just confirming.
She nodded slightly.
"…Kim Tae Kook."
Another pause.
"…I know."
Ae Rin, peeking—
"…OOOOOOHHHHHH."
Tae Kook exhaled softly.
"…Of course you do."
Silence.
Not awkward.
Just… new.
Then—
Han Soo Min reached into her bag.
Pulled out something small.
Placed it on the desk.
"…You forgot this."
Tae Kook looked down.
A pen.
His pen.
"…I didn't drop this either," he said.
"…You did," she replied calmly.
"…You're sure?"
"…Yes."
A pause.
"…You notice everything," he said.
"…Only what matters."
Their eyes met briefly.
Then—
She looked back at her book.
Conversation over.
Just like that.
Tae Kook stood there for a second longer.
Then turned.
Walked back to his seat.
"…Han Soo Min," he thought again.
This time—
It stayed.
Outside—
Ae Rin closed her notebook dramatically.
"…This is no longer an investigation."
A pause.
"…This is a full story."
Inside—
Tae Kook looked out the window.
But for once—
He wasn't really looking outside.
