Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Breakfast Table

Morning sunlight poured through the tall windows of the Valen estate's dining hall, washing the room in a soft golden glow.

The long mahogany table gleamed beneath the chandelier, polished to perfection as always. Silver cutlery was aligned with almost obsessive precision, and delicate porcelain plates rested neatly in place.

Everything looked exactly as Aria remembered.

Perfect.

Elegant.

And completely poisonous.

Aria paused just outside the dining room doors, her fingers resting lightly against the cool brass handle.

Her heart beat steadily in her chest.

Three years ago, this moment had been ordinary.

Back then she had walked into this room with no suspicion, no caution. She had believed the people inside were her family.

Now, standing here with the memories of another life weighing heavily in her mind, the room felt like the stage of a carefully constructed performance.

A performance where she had once played the role of the fool.

Not anymore.

Aria pushed the door open.

The quiet sound of conversation stopped immediately.

Three pairs of eyes turned toward her.

Adrian Valen sat at the head of the table, as he always did. His posture was straight, controlled, the very image of a refined businessman. His dark suit looked immaculate despite the early hour, and his expression carried the same distant authority Aria remembered so well.

Her father.

The man who had sold her life like a business transaction.

Beside him sat Celeste Valen.

Even after everything Aria had learned, she had to admit Celeste was beautiful. Her golden-brown hair was styled elegantly, and her warm smile was as charming as ever.

That smile had deceived everyone.

Especially Aria.

Across from her sat Bianca.

Bianca Valen looked up from her tea with wide, innocent eyes. Her light brown curls framed her face softly, giving her the appearance of someone gentle and harmless.

Aria knew better.

Behind that sweet expression lived a calculating mind that had helped orchestrate the destruction of her life.

The silence stretched for a moment.

Then Celeste's smile brightened.

"Aria, dear," she said warmly. "You're finally awake."

Her voice was smooth, perfectly measured.

Aria walked toward the table slowly.

"Good morning."

Her voice sounded calm.

Polite.

Exactly like the Aria they remembered.

But inside, every step felt like walking across the ghosts of old wounds.

She took her seat at the table.

The same seat she had occupied for years.

A maid stepped forward immediately, pouring fresh tea into her cup.

Aria wrapped her fingers around the porcelain carefully.

Even this small detail triggered memories.

How many mornings had she sat here, drinking tea while Celeste slowly planted ideas in her mind?

How many times had Bianca pretended to defend her while quietly supporting Celeste's schemes?

Adrian finally spoke.

"You're late."

His tone was mild, but the subtle irritation was unmistakable.

Aria lowered her gaze slightly.

"I apologize, Father."

The word felt strange in her mouth.

She hadn't called him that with sincerity in years.

But Adrian simply nodded, already returning his attention to the newspaper in front of him.

The familiar indifference made Aria's chest tighten slightly.

In her previous life, she had tried so hard to earn his approval.

Now she knew the truth.

He had never intended to give it.

Celeste reached for the teapot, refilling her own cup with graceful movements.

"I heard from the doctor yesterday," she said casually.

Aria's fingers tightened around her teacup.

This was it.

She remembered this conversation clearly.

It had seemed harmless at the time.

Celeste glanced at her with gentle concern.

"He mentioned that you've been under a lot of stress lately."

Bianca immediately leaned forward.

"Are you feeling okay, Aria?" she asked softly.

The concern in her voice was so convincing it almost made Aria laugh.

Almost.

"I'm fine," Aria replied.

Celeste tilted her head slightly.

"Your father and I were just discussing how you might benefit from meeting new people."

Adrian turned a page of his newspaper.

"Yes," he said flatly. "You spend too much time alone."

The trap had begun.

Aria's mind replayed the memory from her past life.

This conversation had eventually led to introductions.

Introductions that would later become pressure.

And pressure that would end with a marriage contract.

Celeste smiled kindly.

"I recently met the son of one of your father's business partners," she said. "A very respectable young man."

Bianca's eyes lit up.

"Oh, that sounds wonderful!"

Aria took a slow sip of her tea.

In the past, she had listened quietly.

Embarrassed.

Shy.

Easily guided.

This time was different.

She set her cup down gently.

"Stepmother," she said politely.

Celeste looked at her.

"Yes, dear?"

Aria met her eyes.

The silence stretched slightly.

Just long enough to feel uncomfortable.

"I appreciate your concern," Aria continued calmly. "But I'm not interested in meeting anyone right now."

The reaction was immediate.

Bianca blinked in surprise.

Celeste's smile faltered for the briefest second before returning.

"Oh?"

Adrian lowered his newspaper slowly.

Aria could feel their attention sharpening.

In her previous life, she had rarely disagreed with them.

Especially not so directly.

Celeste's voice remained soft.

"Aria, dear, we're only thinking about your future."

Aria nodded gently.

"I understand."

Then she added, almost casually,

"But I'd rather focus on my studies for now."

Bianca frowned slightly.

"Your studies?"

"Yes."

Aria folded her hands neatly on the table.

"I've been thinking about enrolling in the Valen Business Academy program."

That got Adrian's attention.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"The academy?" he repeated.

Aria nodded.

The Valen Business Academy was an elite training program connected to the family corporation.

In her previous life, Adrian had never allowed her to join.

He had always claimed it was too stressful.

Too demanding.

Now she understood why.

If she had gained influence within the company earlier, his plans would have been far more difficult to execute.

Celeste's smile looked slightly strained now.

"That program is very intense," she said carefully. "Are you sure it's something you want?"

Aria held her gaze.

"Yes."

The confidence in her voice was unmistakable.

Bianca looked between them, clearly confused.

"But Aria," she said hesitantly, "you've never shown interest in business before."

Aria smiled faintly.

"That's true."

Her eyes flicked briefly toward Adrian.

"But I think it's time I started learning more about the family company."

Adrian studied her silently.

His expression had grown harder.

More calculating.

Aria recognized that look.

He was evaluating her.

Trying to determine whether this was a passing curiosity or something more serious.

Finally, he folded the newspaper and set it aside.

"You're young," he said.

"I'm twenty."

"Exactly."

Aria tilted her head slightly.

"You joined the company when you were twenty-two, Father."

The reminder hung in the air.

Celeste shifted slightly in her seat.

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"You've done your research."

Aria simply smiled.

"I'm your daughter."

That single sentence carried an implication Adrian couldn't easily dismiss.

After all, the Valen empire was supposed to be her inheritance.

At least publicly.

A long silence followed.

Then Adrian spoke again.

"If you want to enter the academy," he said slowly, "you'll have to pass the entrance evaluation."

Aria's smile deepened slightly.

"I expected that."

Bianca looked completely stunned now.

"Aria… are you serious about this?"

Aria turned toward her stepsister.

"Yes."

Bianca forced a laugh.

"Well… that's quite a sudden change."

Aria held her gaze for a moment.

"You're right."

Her voice was calm.

"But sometimes people change."

Celeste's eyes lingered on her thoughtfully.

Almost suspiciously.

Aria could feel it.

The first ripple of uncertainty in their carefully controlled world.

Good.

That meant her plan was already working.

Because the most powerful weapon she had right now…

Was unpredictability.

In her previous life, they had known exactly how to manipulate her.

Now they were facing someone completely different.

Adrian stood from the table.

"We'll discuss the academy again after the evaluation," he said.

Then he looked directly at her.

"And Aria."

"Yes, Father?"

"If you're serious about entering the business world…"

His voice hardened slightly.

"Then you should be prepared for disappointment."

Aria met his gaze without hesitation.

"Disappointment doesn't scare me."

For a brief moment, something flickered in Adrian's expression.

Then it was gone.

He turned and left the dining room.

The silence he left behind felt heavy.

Celeste slowly stirred her tea.

Bianca looked thoughtful.

Aria lifted her cup again.

Inside, her mind was already moving three steps ahead.

The academy would give her access to the company.

Access to information.

Access to influence.

And most importantly—

Access to the people her father worked with.

Because somewhere in that world…

Three years before she met him in her previous life…

There was a man whose power rivaled even the Valen empire.

A man who had once watched her suffering from a distance.

A man whose name still echoed in the most powerful circles of the city.

Aria's fingers tightened slightly around her teacup.

This time…

She intended to meet him much sooner.
