Chapter 5 - THE FIRST WHISPER

Kael forced himself to breathe. He stared up at the massive, spectral crimson eyes.

"What are you?" Kael demanded, his voice refusing to tremble.

"I am the memory left behind in the text," the voice echoed, a dark amusement coloring its tone. "I am the architect of the Eclipse Principle. The world calls your kind 'Hollow'. They believe a Core is a blessing. But a Core is a cup. It has a limit. You, boy... you are an ocean."

The starry darkness shattered. Kael gasped, falling to his knees on the dusty floor of the library.

The black book lay open in front of him. The pages weren't written in ink; they were etched in dark, swirling Resonance that Kael could now perfectly read.

The Eclipse Principle. It wasn't a technique for generating power. It was a manual on how to refine devoured energy. It taught how to use the veins of the body as a weapon instead of a Core.

"If I do this," Kael whispered to the empty room, "there is no going back. If I get caught using this, I'm an enemy of the state."

He thought of Instructor Vane's sneer. He thought of Rylan Vance shoving him aside. He thought of the Dissonant beast nearly taking his head off while he was utterly defenseless.

He placed both hands on the book. "Good."

Kael closed his eyes and followed the first breathing technique outlined in the dark pages. He forced the stolen grid-energy out of his muscles and directly into his bones. The pain was excruciating, like his skeleton was being crushed to powder and reforged in dark iron. But he didn't scream. He endured.

Suddenly, a massive explosion shook the entire foundation of the Academy.

Dust rained down from the ceiling. Alarms, loud and frantic, began to blare.

"Dissonant breach! Dissonant breach in the central courtyard! All Vanguard and Adept students, prepare for combat!"

Kael opened his eyes. The black veins receded beneath his skin, hiding his secret. He felt a terrifying, coiled power resting at the base of his spine.

He ran to the high window of the archive and looked down at the courtyard.

The protective dome over the Academy was shattered. A beast easily three times the size of the one in the alley had crashed into the center of the training grounds. It was a Grade-4. A localized disaster.

Down below, Adept students were scattering in terror. Rylan Vance stood frozen, his pristine white uniform covered in dust, his golden Core visibly trembling in his chest as the massive beast loomed over him, raising a giant, corrupted claw.

Rylan closed his eyes, bracing for death.

Kael didn't think. He vaulted out of the third-story window.

The wind rushed past him. He channeled the dark Resonance to his legs, hitting the ground with a shockwave that cracked the stone courtyard.

He stood directly between Rylan and the towering monster.

Rylan opened his eyes in shock. "Kael?! What are you—run! You're a Hollow!"

Kael didn't look back. He stared up at the mountain of corrupted energy, his own eyes flashing with an unnatural, pitch-black void. He slowly raised his right hand.

"Let's see," Kael whispered, his voice carrying a dark, chilling resonance. "How much you can feed me."
