Chapter 11 - Assemble

Part 1 Moving Pieces

The request sounded simple, which, at this point in his life, meant it absolutely wasn't. Adrian stood in the guild hall, staring at the wooden quest board as if it might personally apologize to him. It didn't.

"...An escort job," Adrian muttered, scanning the ink on the parchment. "Safe route, light risk, decent pay..." He paused, narrowing his eyes. "...Yeah, no. That is a blatant lie."

"Correct!" Benjamin said, appearing right beside him like a problem that refused to go away. "It is absolutely a lie!"

Adrian didn't even flinch at the wizard's sudden arrival. "I'm seriously starting to think you just live in this building," Adrian said.

"I do," Benjamin replied proudly.

"...That explains a lot."

Benjamin tapped his finger against the quest paper. "A merchant convoy heading near Shadowfen," Benjamin explained. "Which means—"

"Something completely terrible is going to happen," Adrian finished.

"Exactly!" Benjamin beamed.

"...I heavily hate that we agree on this."

A familiar, calm voice cut into their conversation. "You're still going."

Adrian turned around. Elena stood a few steps away, with Sky perched lightly on her shoulder. The small creature's wings shifted slightly, his bright eyes highly alert.

"...I was briefly considering not going," Adrian said.

"You weren't," Elena replied flatly.

"...I wasn't," Adrian admitted.

Sky chirped softly from his perch. Adrian glanced over at the magical beast. "...You brought backup."

"She insisted," Elena replied.

Sky puffed up his feathers slightly, looking incredibly pleased with himself. Adrian gave a slow nod. "...Fair enough."

A fourth voice suddenly joined their huddle near the board. "You're late."

Adrian turned his head again. Lilly stood near the entrance of the hall, her arms crossed tightly over her chest and her wings folded tight behind her back. Her expression was exactly the same as it always was entirely unimpressed.

"I wasn't aware we actually had a schedule," Adrian said.

"You do now," Lilly replied without missing a beat.

"...Great," Adrian muttered under his breath, adjusting his cloak.

Benjamin clapped his hands together enthusiastically. "Marvelous! The group is officially assembling!"

"We're absolutely not a group," Adrian said immediately.

"You're standing together in a tight circle," Benjamin replied reasonably. "That is easily step one!"

"...That's not how teams work."

"It is today!" Benjamin beamed.

Elena glanced between the two of them, her expression cutting right through the banter. "We leave in ten minutes."

Adrian blinked. "...That feels incredibly soon."

"It is," Lilly replied flatly.

"...Okay," Adrian sighed, checking his gear. "Sure. Why not."

Outside Stonehollow

The merchant convoy waited just beyond the heavy town gates. It wasn't an impressive sight: just three worn wagons, a handful of light guards, and a thick cloud of pure, nervous energy. Adrian looked at the setup, then turned an accusatory glare toward the wizard.

"...You specifically said 'light risk,'" Adrian pointed out.

"Yes," Benjamin replied smoothly.

"They look like they're actively about to cry," Adrian said, gesturing to the drivers.

"That is entirely unrelated to the mission," Benjamin said confidently.

"...I heavily don't think it is."

One of the merchants approached their huddle. He was middle-aged, visibly tired, and trying desperately to look confident—though he was failing slightly. "You're the adventurers we hired?" the man asked, his eyes scanning their mismatched gear.

Adrian glanced at the others, then back at the man. "...Allegedly," Adrian said.

The merchant hesitated, looking thoroughly unsettled. "...We were told you're capable," he said carefully.

Adrian gave a slow nod. "...Yeah, we've also been told that once or twice."

Benjamin stepped forward, throwing his cloak over his shoulder dramatically. "Fear not, good citizen!" he declared. "For I, Benjamin Dazzle—the whizziest wizard in Stonehollow—shall personally ensure your absolute safe passage!"

A heavy, painful pause hung in the air.

"...I deeply regret asking," the merchant said quietly to himself.

"Entirely understandable," Adrian agreed.

Elena stepped forward slightly, her calm presence instantly shifting the mood. "We'll keep you safe," she said, her steady tone projecting absolute confidence.

That did the trick. The merchant nodded, a wave of profound relief washing over his tired features. "...Thank you," he said before walking back to his wagon.

Adrian glanced sideways at Elena. "...You're significantly better at that than I am."

"It helps to give them an actual answer," Elena replied.

"...Yeah, I should probably just not talk to the clients anymore."

"That would be exceptionally wise," Lilly added from his other side.

"...Wow," Adrian said, looking at the celestial warrior. "Very supportive team dynamic we have building here."

"We're still not a team," Lilly reminded him coldly as she walked past.

"...Right. Of course not. My mistake."

The Road to Shadowfen

The forest thickened the further they went. Less light made its way through the canopy, and a heavy, deep silence began to blanket the road. Adrian walked near the front not leading the way, but just positioning himself where he could see what was coming. Benjamin walked right beside him, casually humming a tune that was completely and utterly unrelated to the tense situation. Kazer trotted gracefully ahead, while Jok moved through the trees like a physical glitch in reality.

"...Your pets deeply concern me," Adrian said, tracking the jittery creature in the branches.

"They are companions!" Benjamin corrected.

"They are weapons-grade chaos," Adrian countered.

"Controlled chaos, my boy!" Benjamin insisted.

"...Barely."

Behind them, Elena moved with quiet grace, Sky highly alert on her shoulder as he watched the shadows. Lilly stayed to the side, intentionally keeping her distance from the main huddle. She wasn't acting as part of the group, but she wasn't entirely separate either. Adrian noticed the tactical gap, of course.

"...You always do that?" Adrian asked, glancing toward her.

"Do what?" Lilly replied without looking at him.

"Hover near the very edge of the path like you might choose to disappear into the woods at any given second," Adrian said.

She didn't answer immediately, her eyes scanning the dark treeline. "...Habit," Lilly said flatly.

Adrian nodded slightly. "...Fair."

The road narrowed significantly as the trees grew thicker and the air became visibly heavier with damp mist. Adrian slowed his pace, a sudden chill creeping up his spine.

"...You feel that?" Adrian asked, his hand drifting toward his side.

Elena nodded, her posture shifting. "Yes."

Benjamin stopped humming mid-note. "...Ah," the wizard said quietly, his playful energy vanishing. "That's definitely not good."

"...That is literally never good," Adrian replied.

The wind shifted with a sudden, subtle burst of icy cold. Sky let out a sharp, panicked chirp from Elena's shoulder, and Lilly's posture changed instantly. Her sword was drawn in a flash, and her shield was raised slightly into a defensive guard.

"Stop the wagons," Elena ordered the driver.

The terrified merchants didn't waste a single breath arguing. The convoy ground to a halt, and everything around them went entirely still. It was too still.

Adrian exhaled a slow, controlled breath into the frosty air. "...Yeah," Adrian muttered. "I heavily don't like this part."

Something moved in the deep trees fast, incredibly heavy, and completely dark. And then, the silence returned.

"...Okay," Adrian said, widening his stance. "That's significantly worse."

A low, guttural growl suddenly echoed through the dense forest. It was deep, heavy, and fundamentally wrong, vibrating with an intensity that made the very ground beneath their boots feel like it was tensing. The merchants froze in absolute terror.

"...That's not the—?" one of them started to stammer.

"It is," Elena said quietly, her voice cutting through the panic like ice.

Adrian's jaw tightened as he focused his mind, his hand beginning to warm with latent mana. "...Of course it is."

The trees shifted violently, and the monster stepped directly into view. It was the Dread Wolf noticeably larger than before, or perhaps it just felt that way because there were no longer any wagons blocking his view. Its burning eyes locked onto their position with a gaze that wasn't wild or mindless, but intensely aware.

Adrian exhaled a slow, controlled breath. "...Yeah," he muttered under his breath, his hand instantly beginning to warm. "That is still entirely terrifying."

The ancient beast took a single step forward, and the air around the trade road tightened with suffocating pressure. No one dared to move. And then, it lunged. It was fast far too fast for normal human reaction times.

"MOVE!" Lilly shouted, her voice breaking the spell.

Everything exploded into frantic motion. Adrian's hand shot upward, fire forming instantly above his palm without a single millisecond of delay. "INFERNO BALL!" he shouted.

The brilliant sphere launched through the air, striking the wolf dead-centre mid-charge. A massive wave of flame burst across the creature's flank. For a split second, it actually worked. The wolf staggered slightly under the concussive force, but then it recovered its footing and kept right on coming.

"...Right," Adrian said, quickly shifting his weight. "Of course it did."

"Split it!" Elena called out over the roaring flames. "Don't group up!"

Lilly dashed forward aggressively, her heavy shield raised as she deliberately intercepted the beast's path. The brutal impact sent her boots sliding backward over the loose gravel, but she held her ground, refusing to let the monster pass.

Benjamin raised his staff high into the air. "EARTH BIND!" he shouted.

The ground beneath the wolf surged violently, mud and stone rising up to grab at its massive legs, but the Tier 3 creature effortlessly tore free of the restraints instantly.

"...Noted!" Benjamin called back, unfazed. "Adjusting tactics!"

Sky launched himself high into the air, wind spiraling rapidly around his glowing wings. Elena moved in perfect tandem with her companion, her own innate magic guiding and shaping the sudden gale.

Adrian stepped forward instead of back. "...Okay," he muttered to himself, his focus narrowing down to a razor edge. "We're actually doing this."

Fire formed in his hand once more faster, stronger, and denser than any spell he had cast before. He waited, watching the chaotic battlefield, carefully tracking the timing. The wolf lunged fiercely at Lilly's shield.

"NOW!" Elena called out.

A sudden vortex of wind surged from her position. Adrian threw the Inferno Ball at the exact same moment. The rushing wind caught the fiery projectile in mid-air, instantly amplifying the magic. The flames roared with terrifying power, expanding, burning hotter, and growing blindingly brighter.

The combined attack slammed directly into the wolf's side, the sheer, explosive force driving the massive creature backward over the dirt. For a real, undeniable moment, it deeply hurt the beast. The wolf unleashed a savage snarl a genuine, painful reaction.

Adrian's eyes widened slightly as the smoke cleared. "...Okay. That actually worked."

Then, the Dread Wolf's burning gaze snapped directly to him, locking onto his face with absolute malice.

Adrian's smirk instantly vanished. "...That is definitely not good."

It moved not at Lilly, and not at Elena, but straight at him. It was fast, far too fast for a normal human to track. Adrian's body tensed, preparing for a brutal impact he couldn't dodge.

Then, a lethal blur dropped from the air directly between them. Steel flashed in the dim light, and the sheer force of the resulting collision shook the ground beneath his boots.

Lilly stood firmly in front of him, her heavy shield braced against the wolf's slavering jaws and her sword held ready. "...Don't freeze," she muttered over her shoulder.

Adrian blinked, snapping his mind back into focus. "...Working on it."

The wolf fell back, growling lower and noticeably angrier than before. Elena stepped up right beside them, wind rapidly gathering around her form once more, while Benjamin moved into position behind them with his glowing staff raised high.

For a brief, breathless moment, they all stood together. It wasn't planned, and it certainly wasn't perfect, but they were entirely aligned in their purpose.

"...Okay," Adrian said quietly, his hand warming with a fresh gathering of mana.

They weren't quite a team yet. But they were uncomfortably close.

The Dread Wolf lunged forward a final time, and this time, they all moved perfectly with it.

Part 2 Hold the Line

The Dread Wolf didn't slow down; it adapted. The exact millisecond Lilly blocked its charge, the wolf twisted its massive weight mid-motion, its razor-sharp claws tearing sideways instead of forward. It was too fast and entirely too precise.

"LEFT!" Elena called out, her voice a sharp warning.

Lilly reacted instantly, violently shifting her heavy shield to absorb the blow, but the brutal impact still hit her hard. She slid backward across the loose dirt, her armored boots carving deep lines into the ground, but she didn't fall.

"...That thing hits significantly harder than it looks," Lilly said through clenched teeth, her grip tightening on her sword.

"IT'S THE SIZE OF A HOUSE!" Benjamin shouted from the rear, his wizard robes fluttering.

"...Yeah, that mathematical proportion tracks," Adrian muttered.

The wolf wheeled around again. Its movement wasn't wild or blindly enraged; it was coldly focused squarely on them.

"Protect the wagons!" Elena commanded.

Adrian glanced back over his shoulder. The merchants were scrambling in a blind panic, trying desperately to pull the heavy wagons together while the mercenary guards formed a shaky, trembling line.

"...Yeah," Adrian said quietly, turning back to face the beast. "They're absolutely not surviving this if it gets past us."

"Which is precisely why we will," Elena replied, her eyes narrowing as wind began to whip around her boots.

Adrian exhaled a sharp breath. "...Right. Absolutely no pressure."

The wolf moved again—faster this time, blurring so quickly that it seemingly vanished into thin air.

"...Oh, I heavily hate that trick," Adrian said, his eyes darting frantically.

"UP!" Benjamin shouted, pointing his staff at the canopy.

The wolf came plummeting down from above, its massive claws aimed straight for the vulnerable convoy.

"NO—!" one of the merchants screamed.

Adrian didn't think, and he didn't hesitate. He reacted on pure survival instinct, and deep beneath his skin, his arm shifted. It wasn't a full or clean transformation, but it was more than enough. His limbs stretched just slightly, a bizarre, elastic, and fundamentally wrong motion. He reached out, grabbed the side of the closest wagon, and pulled with everything he had.

The entire vehicle moved. Wood scraped violently across the dirt as the heavy wagon shifted just enough out of the wolf's direct path. A split second later, the creature slammed into the ground exactly where the wagon had been standing, the massive impact shaking the earth to its very roots.

A stunned silence fell over the crossing, followed immediately by a fresh wave of chaos. Adrian blinked, staring down at his arm as it snapped back into its normal, solid form.

"...Okay," Adrian said under his breath, his heart hammering. "That's definitely a Strange feature."

"Later!" Elena called out over the din of battle. "Focus!"

"...Right," Adrian said, shaking out his hand. "Focus first, existential crisis later."

The wolf wheeled around, its burning eyes locking directly onto him yet again.

"...Yeah, I entirely knew that would happen," Adrian muttered, widening his stance.

"Adrian!" Benjamin shouted from the rear line. "Try containment!"

"...With what, exactly?" Adrian asked.

"Anything!" Benjamin replied frantically.

"...Great. Love incredibly vague instructions during a crisis."

The wolf lunged, its massive frame eating up the distance between them. Adrian stepped forward instead of back. "Fine," he said, his focus sharpening to a razor edge. "We're improvising."

He raised both hands into the air, and water formed instantly above his palms. It wasn't smooth or perfect, but it was there, rippling with dense weight. "Aqua Sphere," Adrian muttered.

The sphere expanded rapidly before he forcefully dropped the entire mass into the dirt beneath the oncoming monster. At the exact same time, he unleashed a command: "NOW!"

Benjamin reacted instantly, swinging his staff with brutal force. "MUD COFFIN!" he yelled.

The earth beneath the beast surged upward as the loose sand and dirt mixed with Adrian's freshly summoned water. The ground beneath the wolf's front paws collapsed inward, turning into a thick, heavy mud that tightly locked around its massive legs. The Tier 3 creature sank not fully, but just enough to completely rob it of its forward momentum.

"...Okay," Adrian said, his breathing noticeably heavier now as the mana drain hit him. "That worked significantly better than expected."

"For about three seconds!" Benjamin warned, his voice cracking.

The wolf roared in pure fury, its muscles bulging beneath its dark fur as it violently tore free from the earthen trap. The heavy mud shattered into splinters, and the hardened earth cracked wide open.

"...Yep," Adrian noted grimly. "Exactly three seconds."

"Good enough!" Elena said, stepping past them.

A fierce gale of wind surged around her form as Sky took to the air above her head. The localized currents sharpened into invisible blades, cutting at the beast and restricting its movements. It wasn't enough to stop the wolf entirely, but it was actively slowing the creature down.

"Keep it off balance!" Elena called out to the front line.

Lilly moved again, her execution faster and far more aggressive than before. She struck incredibly low, her blade scraping sharply against the wolf's thick hide. While it didn't deal any deep or fatal damage, the precise strike was more than enough to redirect the monster's path away from the vulnerable caravan.

"...We're absolutely not killing it like this!" Lilly called out, her shield ringing from another near-miss.

"I know!" Adrian replied, his palms smoking.

"Then think faster!" she snapped, driving her sword at a massive paw.

"...Working on it!"

The wolf spun with terrifying fluidity, its heavy tail whipping through the air like a club. The blunt impact caught Benjamin mid-cast, shattering his concentration and sending the wizard flying across the road.

"BENJAMIN!" Adrian shouted.

Kazer barked frantically, rushing toward his fallen master, while Jok dropped cleanly from the canopy above, hissing wildly at the beast. Benjamin hit the ground hard, rolling into the dirt before letting out a painful groan.

"I am alive!" Benjamin shouted, raising a trembling hand. "Mostly!"

"...Good enough for now!" Adrian called back.

The Dread Wolf turned its attention away from the front line, its burning eyes shifting toward the vulnerable wagons.

"...No," Adrian said quietly, his voice dropping all humor.

It charged. It was fast far too fast for the trembling frontline guards to react.

"WE CAN'T STOP THAT!" one of the mercenaries screamed, dropping his spear.

Adrian stepped directly into the beast's path anyway. "...Yeah," Adrian said, a dangerous calm settling over him. "We can."

Fire formed instantly above his palm, building up larger and denser than anything he had summoned before. It was visibly unstable, crackling with raw kinetic energy, but it was controlled enough to aim.

"ELENA!" Adrian roared.

She didn't hesitate for a single millisecond. Wind surged violently from her position as Sky dove straight out of the clouds. The localized currents twisted the air into a tight vortex, feeding oxygen directly into the gathering flame.

"INFERNO BALL!" Adrian shouted.

He threw the magic with everything he had. The rushing wind caught the projectile mid-flight, instantly amplifying its mass. The flames roared, expanding into a blinding, searing wall of heat. The combined attack slammed squarely into the wolf mid-charge, erupting into a violent explosion of fire and physical force.

The massive beast staggered actually staggered backward over the road.

"...Okay," Adrian said, his breathing incredibly heavy as the mana exhaustion clawed at his chest. "That definitely worked."

But it still wasn't enough to end it. The wolf violently shook its head to clear the smoke. Jagged, smoking burn marks were clearly visible across its dark fur now. It was deeply hurt, but it wasn't stopping.

"...Yeah," Adrian noted grimly, his heart slamming against his ribs. "Still a massive problem."

The creature unleashed a deafening roar! louder and far angrier than before and the very ground beneath their boots began to tremble slightly.

"...That pressure feels entirely Terrifying," Adrian said.

"It's adapting!" Benjamin shouted, painfully pushing himself up from the gravel. "We're making it take us seriously!"

"...I heavily don't want that!" Adrian replied.

"Too late for choices!" Benjamin yelled back.

The wolf lowered its massive body to the dirt, pooling its energy. It wasn't just casually attacking anymore; it was preparing to end the fight.

"...We can't hold a defensive line against this," Lilly said, her shield arm visibly shaking.

Elena didn't bother to argue. "...No," she said quietly, her eyes scanning the field. She paused for a beat. "...We need to move it."

Adrian looked over at her. "...Move it?"

"We have to lead it away," Elena explained.

"...That sounds like a fundamentally terrible idea," Adrian replied.

"It is."

"...Great. My favorite kind."

She met his eyes, her expression calm, focused, and unyielding. "We cannot protect the merchants and successfully fight this thing at the same time."

Adrian exhaled a slow, hot breath. "...So we choose."

"Yes," Elena replied.

Adrian looked back at the merchants one final time. They were terrified, frozen, and completely helpless. He turned his gaze back to the looming wolf.

"...Yeah," Adrian said quietly. The decision was made. "BENJAMIN!"

"I am here!" the wizard replied, bracing his staff.

"Get them out of here right now!" Adrian commanded.

Benjamin blinked. "...That sounds uncomfortably like actual responsibility."

"It is."

"...I entirely accept!" Benjamin said, his posture straightening.

"LILLY!" Adrian called out.

The celestial warrior glanced at him, her sword catching the ambient light. "...You're absolutely not dying out here."

"...That's the exact goal," Adrian replied.

Elena stepped right beside him, Sky circling fiercely above their heads. "...We pull the aggro," she said.

Adrian nodded, his hands warming with raw elemental magic. "...We pull it."

The Dread Wolf roared a final time, preparing to lunge and this time, they ran directly toward the beast instead of away from it.

"...This is a phenomenally terrible idea," Adrian muttered as they closed the distance.

"Yes," Elena agreed beside him.

"...Okay. Just checking."

The wolf lunged forward blindly, and they deftly avoided the jaws, leading the massive predator straight off the trade road and into the dark, suffocating depths of Shadowfen, entirely away from the vulnerable convoy.

Part 3 Into the Deep

The forest changed the moment they crossed the threshold into Shadowfen. It didn't happen gradually or subtly; it happened immediately. The air thickened with a damp chill, the ambient light dimmed into a murky twilight, and even the ground beneath their boots felt completely different. It was softer, unstable, and felt alive in a way Adrian didn't appreciate for a single second.

"...Yeah," Adrian muttered between heavy breaths as he ran. "This place is absolutely awful."

Behind them, thick branches snapped like twigs and massive trees shook to their roots. The Dread Wolf wasn't slowing down at all.

"Don't lose your pace!" Elena called out from just ahead, her voice remaining calm but firm as she nimbly navigated the roots.

"I wasn't exactly planning to!" Adrian replied, his chest heaving.

"That would be ideal," Elena said.

"...Thank you for the profound emotional encouragement," Adrian muttered.

High above the canopy, Sky circled them, letting out a series of sharp, panicked warning chirps.

"Left!" Elena called out suddenly.

Adrian didn't question her direction, and he didn't hesitate for a fraction of a millisecond. He veered hard to the side just as the wolf tore violently through the exact space he had been occupying a second earlier.

"...Okay NOT COOL!," Adrian said, his heart pounding against his ribs like a trapped bird. "That was entirely too close."

"But you're still alive," Elena noted, not breaking her stride.

"...Your standards for success are terrifyingly low."

"They are realistic for Shadowfen."

"...That is somehow so much worse."

A moment later, they broke through the dense treeline and into a small clearing. It was slightly wider and more open than the narrow trail, but only barely.

"Here!" Elena called out, stopping abruptly in the center of the grass.

Adrian skidded slightly over the damp moss to a halt beside her. "...We're actually stopping?"

"We can't keep running indefinitely," Elena replied, turning to face the path.

"...I was honestly hoping we could just do that forever."

Before he could suggest a u-turn, the trees behind them exploded outward in a shower of splintered wood and leaves. The Dread Wolf burst violently into the clearing. It landed heavily, its burning eyes immediately locking onto them. Its breathing was heavy, but entirely controlled. The creature wasn't tired at all.

"...Yeah," Adrian said, adjusting his stance. "That completely UNFAIR!."

Elena stepped forward slightly, a fierce vortex of wind rapidly gathering around her boots. "We hold it right here."

Adrian blinked. "...We—what?"

"We hold it," Elena repeated, her voice dripping with quiet steel.

"...That sounds like a significantly worse variation of our last terrible plan."

"It's the only viable option we have left," she said flatly.

A heavy, realization-filled beat passed between them. Adrian exhaled a long breath, letting his hands warm with magic. "...Okay. Fair."

The wolf didn't give them another second to coordinate. It moved first, lunging across the clearing even faster than it had on the road. Adrian barely had time to react. He raised his hand, desperately trying to call forth his fire magic, but he was entirely too slow.

Before the beast could close its jaws around him, a lethal blur cut directly into the space. Steel met claw with a deafening CLANG that rang out across the forest.

It was Lilly. She slid backward slightly over the moss, her heavy shield braced against the monster's momentum and her wings flaring out just enough to stabilize her footing.

"...You're late," Adrian said, leaning into his stance as the heat gathered in his palm.

"I'm efficient," Lilly replied, her eyes locked on the snarling beast.

"...That's absolutely not what that word means."

"I caught up," she said, her grip tightening on her sword. "That's what matters right now."

Adrian exhaled a sharp breath. "...Yeah. I'll take it."

The wolf snarled, its burning eyes shifting frantically between the three of them. It was no longer dealing with a single prey item; now, it had three distinct targets and three genuine threats to manage.

"...Good," Adrian muttered, keeping his hands ready. "More of us for it to try and lose."

"Focus," Lilly said sharply, her shield arm tensing.

"Right. Fully focusing," Adrian replied.

Elena stepped slightly to the side to widen their perimeter, the localized wind building significantly stronger and sharper around her now. "We control its movement," Elena instructed the front line. "Not its raw strength."

"...That still sounds remarkably difficult," Adrian noted.

"It is," she replied simply.

"...Great."

The wolf lunged across the clearing again, but Lilly moved first to meet it. She deftly intercepted its path, her heavy shield up. This time, however, she didn't just absorb the brutal force of the blow; she actively redirected it. Using the beast's own weight against it, she twisted her stance, forcing the wolf's massive momentum to shift slightly just enough to expose its flank.

"NOW!" Elena called out.

A sudden vortex of wind surged from her position, cutting aggressively across the wolf's exposed side and forcing the massive predator completely off-balance.

Adrian stepped forward, his focus locked onto the target. Fire formed instantly above his open palm without a single shred of delay. "INFERNO BALL!" he shouted.

He threw the projectile with everything he had left. The amplified attack struck perfectly clean, the flames bursting violently across the wolf's massive shoulder. The Tier 3 creature unleashed a deafening roar this time, it was noticeably louder and significantly angrier than before.

Adrian stood his ground, his breathing running heavier now as the deep mana exhaustion clawed at his chest. "...Okay. We're actually doing some real damage again."

"Not enough," Lilly called back over her shield, her voice tight.

"...Yeah, I heavily figured as much."

The wolf turned even faster now, its agility defying its massive size. It struck downward, its heavy claws slamming violently into the damp, mossy ground. The resulting shockwave ripped through the clearing, knocking Adrian completely off his feet. He hit the ground hard, the brutal impact knocking every last shred of air right out of his lungs.

"...Okay," Adrian wheezed, clutching his chest as he rolled over. "That pressure is definitely A new feeling."

"Adrian!" Elena called out, a rare edge of panic in her tone.

"I'm perfectly fine!" Adrian called back, forcefully pushing himself up from the dirt. "Probably!"

The wolf didn't give him a single second to recover. It charged across the gap, heading straight for him with a lethal, blinding speed.

"...Right," Adrian said, his eyes widening. "Of course it did."

He scrambled to raise his hand, desperately searching for that familiar core of heat. For half a second, nothing happened. Absolutely nothing.

"...Not right now," Adrian muttered, his panic mounting.

The wolf closed the remaining distance far too fast for a normal human to dodge. In that desperate, breathless millisecond, Adrian's body reacted on pure, raw instinct instead of his magic. Beneath his skin, his flesh shifted not a full or clean transformation, but it was just enough. His arm stretched outward, his hand clamping forcefully onto the side of the wolf's snapping jaw.

For a split second, the entire world seemed to stop.

The sheer force, the brutal impact, and the crushing weight of the Tier 3 beast channeled straight through his extended limb. "...Okay," Adrian groaned through tightly clenched teeth, his boots sliding back. "This is... an absolute problem."

The ground cracked open beneath his feet under the pressure. His mutated arm trembled violently, straining to its absolute limit against the monster's jaw. He couldn't hold it, and he knew he wouldn't hold it for long.

"MOVE!" Lilly shouted, charging forward.

Adrian released his grip and threw his weight to the side, rolling desperately over the grass. The wolf's massive jaws slammed shut with a deafening SNAP exactly where he had been standing a fraction of a second before.

"...Yeah," Adrian said, his heart hammering as he scrambled to his feet. "Definitely a MASSIVE problem."

Elena stepped directly into the gap, a violent vortex of wind surging from her position to act as a barrier. "Fall back!" she called out.

"...We literally just got to this clearing!" Adrian replied.

"We cannot win this fight right now," she said flatly.

The statement sounded entirely different from her usual evaluations. It wasn't an expression of uncertainty; she was stating a cold, absolute certainty. Adrian paused for half a second, looking at the glowing cracks in the beast's fur.

"...Yeah," Adrian said quietly, his humor draining. "I know."

The wolf roared again, its presence growing stronger and its movements appearing faster by the second, as if it were actively adapting to their tactics. It was learning how they fought.

"...That is entirely unfair," Adrian muttered.

"It's evolving," Lilly noted, her shield braced as she fell back a step.

"...Of course it is. Why wouldn't it be?"

Elena reached out and forcefully grabbed Adrian's arm. "We fall back right now."

"...And do what, exactly?" Adrian asked.

She met his eyes, her gaze unwavering. "Survive."

A heavy beat passed between them. Adrian gave a firm nod. "...Right. Step one."

Lilly moved seamlessly beside them, her heavy shield raised into a protective guard. "Move," she commanded.

They retreated carefully into the deeper brush of Shadowfen, making sure not to run blindly into the dark. They pulled the wolf deeper into the woods, intentionally keeping its burning focus locked onto them to ensure it stayed entirely away from the trade road.

Adrian glanced back once over his shoulder through the dense trees. The trade crossing was entirely empty. The convoy was gone and completely safe.

"...Okay," Adrian said quietly to himself, a small sense of relief cutting through the adrenaline. "That's at least something."

The Dread Wolf lunged through the undergrowth again, and they kept moving through the twilight. They weren't winning, and they weren't losing; they were just successfully surviving for now.
