Chapter 7 - An Unexpected Encounter

Amelia's POV

The ride back to Mia's apartment was quiet.

I leaned my head against the car window, watching the city lights blur past as the taxi moved through the evening traffic.

Everything felt overwhelming.

Just yesterday, I was still Daniel Carter's wife.

Now I am divorced ... .and pregnant.

My hand rested on my stomach.

The doctor's word echoed softly in my mind.

"You are about six weeks pregnant."

A strange mix of fear and warmth filled my chest.

Mia glanced at me again.

"You are literally thinking too much."

I forced a small smile. "Can you blame me?"

She sighed and crossed her arms.

"I still can't believe that idiot treated you like that."

"Daniel isn't an idiot," I said quietly.

But now you believe.

Mia immediately turned toward me.

"Amelia!"

"What?"

"He divorced you for another woman!"

I didn't respond.

Because the truth was… defending him had become a habit over the past three years.

Mia noticed my silence and softened her tone.

"Well," she said gently, "whether he regrets it or not, he already lost you. And this baby forever."

Lost me.

The words lingered in my mind.

For some reason, my heart tightened slightly.

Daniel's POV

I sat inside my office. Large glass windows behind me revealed the glittering skyline.

My desk was covered with documents, but my attention remained somewhere else.

My mind kept replaying Amelia's calm expression at the hospital.

She hadn't cried.

She hadn't begged.

She hadn't even tried to explain herself.

For three years, Amelia had always tried to hold onto their marriage.

Even when I ignored her.

Even when I barely came home.

Yet today…

She walked away without looking back.

I leaned back in my chair and rubbed my temple.

Something about it felt wrong.

Too final.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

It was Sophia.

I answered.

"Hey baby, are you still working?" she asked sweetly.

"Yes."

"I was thinking maybe we could have dinner tonight."

I hesitated.

Normally I would have agreed immediately.

But tonight I felt strangely tired.

"Another day," I said. "I still have work to finish."

There was a brief pause.

"Oh… okay," Sophia replied.

But her voice carried a hint of disappointment.

After ending the call, I stared at the dark screen of my phone.

Then suddenly, Amelia's words returned to me again.

"This child has nothing to do with you."

My brows slowly furrowed.

Why had she sounded so certain?

Amelia's POV

Mia insisted on accompanying me back to the hospital for a follow-up appointment.

"You're not doing this alone," she said firmly.

The hospital lobby was already busy with patients and nurses moving through the halls.

As we waited near the reception desk, Mia leaned closer.

"After this appointment, we're going shopping."

"Shopping?" I asked, confused.

"You need comfortable clothes, shoes,"she said. "And vitamins. And probably a hundred other things pregnant women need."

I laughed softly.

"You're taking this more seriously than I am."

"Of course I am," she replied proudly. "I'm going to be the best aunt ever."

At that moment, the elevator doors opened nearby.

A tall man stepped out, surrounded by two assistants.

His presence immediately drew attention.

Lucas Grant.

One of the youngest and most successful CEOs in the city.

Lucas had come to the hospital for a routine check on his grandfather who was admitted in the VIP ward.

But as he walked across the lobby, his eyes suddenly paused on a familiar figure.

Amelia.

She stood near the reception desk, speaking quietly with Mia.

Lucas slowed slightly.

His assistant noticed and followed his gaze.

"That's Amelia Hart," the assistant said. "The same woman from yesterday."

Lucas didn't respond.

He simply observed her from a distance.

She looked different today.

Softer.

But still composed.

At that moment, Mia said something that made Amelia laugh harder.

The small laugh on her face surprised him.

For some reason, it made her seem even more… interesting.

Lucas looked away after a moment.

"Let's go," he said calmly.

But as he stepped into the elevator again, his mind briefly lingered on her image.

Sometimes the most unexpected meetings could change everything.
