Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Ashen Sky

Title: The Ember Crown

Chapter 1: The Ashen Sky

The sky had not been blue for a hundred years.

Liora had only ever known it as a shifting sea of ash—grey by day, ember-red by night. The elders said the world once had color, that rivers shone like glass and forests whispered in shades of green. But those were stories, and stories had a way of softening truth.

She pulled her cloak tighter as the wind howled across the ruins of Velmora. The broken towers clawed at the sky like the bones of a dead giant. Somewhere beneath them, buried in time and dust, lay the thing she had come for.

The map trembled in her hand—not from fear, she told herself, but from the restless magic sealed within it.

"Close," it whispered.

Liora froze.

The voice wasn't hers.

"Closer than you think."

She swallowed hard. Magic like this was forbidden. Dangerous. Alive.

Yet she had crossed deserts, outwitted raiders, and survived the Hollow Beasts to get here. Turning back was no longer a choice.

With careful steps, she descended into the ruins.

Each stone she passed seemed to breathe. The air grew warmer, heavier, as if the earth itself guarded a secret. At the heart of the fallen city stood a shattered gate, its surface carved with symbols that pulsed faintly like dying stars.

The map burned in her hands.

"Open it," the voice urged.

"What are you?" Liora whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"I am what remains."

Before she could think, her fingers brushed the gate.

The world split open.

Light erupted from the carvings, flooding the ruins with blinding gold. The ash-filled sky above cracked like glass, and for a heartbeat—just one—Liora saw blue.

Then the scream came.

Not hers.

Something ancient had awakened.

And it knew her name.
