For a moment, Penelope simply stared at the man standing in the doorway.
Doctor Henry had one hand resting against the doorframe, his dark medical bag held in the other. His expression was not quite one of surprise at finding her there. It was considerably closer to displeasure.
Oh no…
She straightened at once. It was already too late to hide.
Penelope, who spent the last several minutes wishing for a way to escape the conversation awaiting her at Ravenport estate, found herself wishing even more desperately that he had chosen another morning to visit.
"Doctor Henry."
"Miss Anderson."
His gaze moved past her shoulder, taking in the staircase and the entrance hall before settling upon her again. He appeared to be searching for something, although she suspected she already knew what it was.
"You were not at home when I called yesterday," he said.
Penelope's stomach tightened. "No," she replied, keeping her voice as even as possible. "I was otherwise occupied."
"Indeed."
