Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Great Forest Bake

The summit of the watchtower was whipped by a cold, biting wind, but Silas didn't feel the chill. His focus was entirely on the Solar Beacon Gem—a fist-sized diamond that pulsed with the trapped heat of a thousand summer afternoons. Beside him, Elara was chanting, her crystal focus channeling the gem's raw energy into a controlled beam of pure, golden light.

"I can't hold it steady for long, Silas!" Elara shouted over the hum of the magic. "The gem is hungry! It wants to release everything at once!"

"Just ten more seconds!" Silas yelled back. He stood before a massive stone basin he had dragged into the center of the tower. Inside wasn't a potion or a weapon, but a gargantuan mound of dough. He had mixed his purified yeast-starter with crushed sun-grains and the mineral salts provided by the gargoyles.

As the beam of solar light hit the dough, it didn't burn. Instead, it began to expand at an impossible rate, glowing with a brilliant, pearlescent white light. This was the "Cleansing Dough"—a bread designed not to be eaten, but to act as a magical sponge.

"Now! Direct the heat to the base!"

With a final, straining cry, Elara tilted the beam. The dough reached its critical mass and began to overflow from the tower, cascading down the mountainside like a slow-moving river of molten silver. As it touched the black, oily blight in the valley below, a violent hiss echoed through the woods. The dough was literally "rising" through the poison, pulling the darkness out of the soil and trapping it within its fermented pores.

Silas watched from the battlements as the grey, dead trees began to shiver. The black oil was being sucked upward, replaced by a warm, golden vitality. The "Great Bake" was working. The fermentation was breaking down the curse, turning the toxic rot into harmless ash.

By the time the suns set, the valley didn't smell of rot anymore. It smelled of fresh yeast, toasted grain, and the sweet, unmistakable scent of Mana-Honey. High above, the drone of wings returned as the golden bees took flight, sensing the restoration of their home.

Silas sank to the floor of the watchtower, his apron scorched and his muscles aching. He looked at his hands—they were covered in flour and soot, the hands of a worker.

"We did it," Elara breathed, collapsing next to him. She looked at the glowing valley below. "You actually saved the Whispering Woods with a loaf of bread, Silas. The Academy isn't going to believe this."

"I didn't save it," Silas said, a small, tired smile tugging at his lips. "I just gave it a reason to wake up."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out two small, slightly squashed cinnamon rolls he had saved from the morning. He handed one to Elara. In the quiet of the night, with the magic humming peacefully below them, it was the best meal either of them had ever had.
