The moment Kaneki's eyes met Veldora's, everything changed.

[Notice: Multiple skill evolution conditions have been met]

[Analyzing threat level... Complete]

[Combining: Detection, Presence Sense, Magic Perception, Danger Sense, Thermal Sense, Echolocation, Enhanced Hearing, Enhanced Vision, Night Vision, Pressure Detection, Vibration Detection]

[Evolution Complete: Acquired S-Rank Basic Skill - Magic Sense]

Kaneki's world exploded into clarity. He could suddenly perceive everything—every particle of magical energy in the air, every biological signature within a hundred meters, every fluctuation in Veldora's massive reservoir of power. It was like going from black-and-white to full color, from silence to a symphony.

[MAGIC SENSE (S-Rank Basic Skill)]

Notice: External magical interference detected.

Magicules, biological signatures, and hostile intent have been successfully mapped.

Conclusion: The surrounding environment has been rendered fully observable.

Probability of ambush: Negligible.

Before Kaneki could process that, another notification appeared.

[Combining: Analyze, Observe, Assess, Tactical Analysis]

[Evolution Complete: Acquired S-Rank Basic Skill - Appraisal]

[APPRAISAL (S-Rank Basic Skill)]

Notice: Target analysis initiated.

Skills, resistances, and threat level have been calculated and categorized.

Recommendation: Optimal countermeasures have been identified.

Outcome: Victory conditions established.

Information flooded Kaneki's mind. Veldora's stats, his magical capacity—which was absolutely enormous—his resistances, his weaknesses. But what stood out most was the threat assessment.

[Target: Storm Dragon Veldora]

[Threat Level: Catastrophic]

[Recommended Action: Avoid Combat]

"Great Sage," Kaneki thought quickly. "What just happened? And what's the difference between these S-Rank Basic Skills and my Unique Skills?"

"S-Rank Basic Skills represent the ultimate peak of standard abilities," Great Sage explained. "They are formed when multiple lower-ranked skills evolve and combine in response to specific conditions. Unlike Unique Skills, which have no growth ceiling and can evolve infinitely, S-Rank Basic Skills are the absolute pinnacle of normal skill development."

"And I got two of them just from seeing this dragon?"

"Affirmative. Your Unique Skill: Monster Monarch sensed the massive power differential and automatically triggered an evolution to provide you with the tools necessary for survival. Veldora's magicule capacity is approximately one hundred times greater than yours."

Kaneki kept his expression neutral, but internally he was reassessing. This wasn't a dungeon boss. This was something far beyond that.

"Analysis of Veldora's prison seal indicates he is currently unable to use his full power," Great Sage continued. "However, even at partial strength, he possesses sufficient capability to inflict critical damage. Recommendation: Diplomacy is advised until you have grown strong enough to face a True Dragon-class opponent."

"True Dragon?" Kaneki thought. "And what's a Demon Lord? You mentioned he's above that level."

"Insufficient data. Further investigation required."

Outwardly, Kaneki offered a slight smile and a nod of his head. "I'm Kaneki," he said simply. "Sorry for the dramatic entrance. I've been trying to get out of that dungeon for days."

Veldora straightened slightly, his massive form still tense. This intruder was polite, which was unexpected. Most beings either fled in terror at his presence or attacked immediately. But this Kaneki showed neither fear nor aggression—just calm assessment.

"I am Veldora!" the dragon announced, putting force into his voice to sound appropriately intimidating. "Storm Dragon, Scourge of the Sky, and one of the four True Dragons!" He paused, studying Kaneki more carefully. "You possess remarkable power for one so young. But I sense you're hiding your true strength. If we are to converse as equals, release your full aura. It is the quickest way to forge trust between strangers."

Kaneki's eyebrow raised. "You want me to... flex?"

"Indeed! Show me what you truly are!"

"Master," Great Sage spoke up. "This is actually sound advice. Use Monster Monarch to project your aura. The skill's dominant essence will enhance your overall presence, which will improve negotiation outcomes with a being of Veldora's status."

Kaneki shrugged. "Alright then."

He stopped suppressing his power.

Monster Monarch activated fully, and Kaneki's aura exploded outward. It wasn't the overwhelming quantity of Veldora's magicules, but it was dense, sharp, and fundamentally different from normal monster energy. It carried the weight of every creature he'd devoured, every skill he'd consumed, every death that had built him into what he was now.

The two auras collided in the center of the cave.

The mountain trembled. Rocks fell from the ceiling. Outside, in the Jura Forest, trees bent and animals fled in terror as two catastrophic presences clashed. The very air seemed to distort between them, crackling with raw power.

Then Veldora laughed.

"Excellent! Magnificent!" The dragon's eyes gleamed with genuine delight. "Yes, I accept you as an equal, Kaneki! Though I must note—you are clearly a monster despite your human appearance. And your aura feels... young. Newly born, perhaps?"

Kaneki let his aura settle back to normal levels. "You could say that."

"Fascinating!" Veldora leaned forward, his massive head tilting with curiosity. "You must be a unique monster born from the dungeon below. It has been millennia since I last encountered one of the Vampire race, but your energy signature is unmistakable. Blood magic, predatory nature, the hunger—yes, definitely vampire-kin."

"Vampire?" Kaneki considered that. It wasn't entirely inaccurate, given his abilities.

"Indeed! A powerful one at that!" Veldora's enthusiasm was almost childlike despite his intimidating form. "Listen, Kaneki. I have been imprisoned in this cave for three hundred years, sealed by a hero after I may have gone on a small rampage."

"Small rampage?"

"I may have destroyed a few cities. Unintentionally! Mostly." Veldora coughed. "But that is beside the point! I have a proposal for you. If you agree to free me from this seal, I will give you a name. As a True Dragon, my naming will grant you tremendous power—you would evolve into a true Vampire-kin, gaining strength beyond your current state."

Kaneki was quiet for a moment, his newly acquired Appraisal skill analyzing every word, every micro-expression on Veldora's face. The dragon seemed sincere, but there was something else there. Desperation? Loneliness?

"Why do you want to be freed?" Kaneki asked simply.

Veldora's playful demeanor faded. His eyes grew serious, almost sad.

"I wish to search for my daughter," he said quietly. "We were separated long ago, and I have been unable to locate her. Every day I spend in this prison is another day she might be in danger, alone, without her father's protection."

The massive dragon lowered his head, his prideful posture giving way to genuine humility.

"Please. Help me."

Kaneki stared at the bowing dragon. In Tokyo, he'd learned that power without purpose led only to destruction. But power used to protect those precious to you—that was something he understood completely.

"Great Sage," he thought. "Tell me about naming."

"When a powerful being bestows a name upon a lesser one, they share a portion of their magicules permanently," Great Sage explained. "This typically results in evolution for the named individual. Given Veldora's immense magicule capacity, receiving his name would likely trigger significant growth in your abilities and potentially unlock new skills."

Kaneki looked at Veldora—this ancient, powerful being who was asking for help to find his daughter. Not demanding, not threatening. Asking.

"I'll help you," Kaneki said.

Veldora's head shot up, his eyes wide. "Truly?"

"On one condition. After you're free and find your daughter, you don't go on any more rampages. No destroying cities, no terrorizing people. Use your power to protect, not destroy."

"I—yes! Yes, of course!" Veldora nodded enthusiastically. "You have my word as a True Dragon! Kaneki my new friend!"

"Then we have a deal." Kaneki's lips curled into a subtle smile.

"Excellent!" Veldora's excitement returned in full force. "Now then, what name would you like? As the one being named, you have the right to choose!"

Kaneki paused. A name. A new identity for a new life.

He thought of Tokyo. Of Touka, Hide, and everyone at Anteiku. Of the Quinx Squad and the CCG investigators who'd died because he couldn't control his power. Of his mother, whose death had shaped his entire life. Of Rize, whose organs had cursed him. Of every person he'd failed to save and every person he'd killed.

Death had followed him like a shadow. In his old life and in the dungeon below. But maybe, in this new world, he could give death a different meaning. Not senseless destruction, but the end that comes for all things—natural, necessary, and sometimes even merciful.

"Thanatos," Kaneki said quietly. "I want to be called Thanatos."

Veldora blinked. "Thanatos? The ancient god of death?"

"Yes." He answered, surprised this world knew of the Death God.

"That is... surprisingly fitting, actually." Veldora grinned, showing rows of massive teeth. "Very well! I, Veldora, Storm Dragon and True Dragon of the Sky, do hereby bestow upon you the name Thanatos!"

Power surged through Kaneki like lightning.
