Marcus's POV
Marcus had been waiting for this moment for two years.
Two years of watching Keira take the Alpha position that should have been his. Two years of serving as her Beta while rage ate him alive from the inside. Two years of knowing he was smarter than her, stronger than her, more deserving than her, and having to watch her lead like she belonged there.
She didn't belong there.
And now he had the weapon that would destroy her completely.
He walked away from the hallway slowly, making sure Keira heard his footsteps. Making sure she understood that he'd seen everything. That he knew her secret. That her days as Alpha were numbered.
In his private quarters, Marcus pulled out his phone and started making calls.
The first was to Derek, a warrior who'd been loyal since the challenge fight. The fight where Keira had beaten Marcus and stolen the position that was meant for him. Derek answered on the second ring.
"We need to meet," Marcus said quietly. "I found her weakness."
Twenty minutes later, they sat in darkness, and Marcus laid out exactly what he'd discovered. The way Keira had reacted to Cade. The way the mate bond flared between them like a live wire. The way they'd looked at each other in that hallway like the rest of the world didn't exist.
"That's forbidden," Derek whispered. "Pack law. If anyone finds out—"
"Everyone will find out." Marcus felt the rage crystallize into something focused and deadly. "In three days. At the regional gathering."
The regional gathering was the biggest pack event of the year. Over two hundred wolves would gather to discuss territory disputes and regional business. Every major Alpha would be there. The council. The elders. Everyone who mattered.
It was the perfect place to expose Keira Blackthorn and everything she was trying to hide.
"You're going to tell them about the bond," Derek said, understanding dawning on his face.
"More than that." Marcus pulled up pack records on his computer. Records that showed Keira's behavior over the last few days. Disappearing at odd hours. Missing council meetings. The sudden agreement to the peace alliance when she'd been against it for weeks. "I'm going to make a case that she's compromised. That she's chosen a male over pack duty. That she's unfit to lead."
Derek's lips curled into a smile that matched Marcus's own hunger for power. "The elders will call for a leadership challenge."
"If we're lucky." Marcus felt the weight of two years of frustration finally shifting into something he could use. "More likely, they'll demand she step down for the good of the pack. A female Alpha who's corrupted by forbidden lust isn't fit to lead anyone."
Marcus made more calls that night. To wolves who'd opposed Keira taking the Alpha position. To males who believed females had no place in true power. To ambitious warriors who wanted advancement and would help him if he promised them better futures.
By midnight, he had seventeen supporters. Seventeen voices willing to stand with him. Seventeen votes that would carry weight when the regional council heard the evidence.
It wasn't enough to force her out immediately. But it was enough to plant doubt. Enough to make her seem weak. Enough to make other Alphas question whether a female could truly lead.
Marcus poured himself a drink and smiled at his phone screen.
Three days. Just seventy-two hours until the regional gathering. Seventy-two hours until he could stand in front of two hundred wolves and expose Keira Blackthorn for exactly what she was. A weak female Alpha corrupted by a forbidden mate bond.
The next morning, Marcus positioned himself strategically. Near the pack house. Near the training grounds. Everywhere Keira and Cade might pass within sight of each other.
By afternoon, he'd captured everything he needed. The way Cade's head turned whenever Keira entered a room. The way Keira's pupils dilated when she scented him. The way they looked at each other when they thought no one was watching. Absolute proof that the bond existed and was growing stronger.
Then Marcus did something clever. Something that would be damning evidence when the time came.
He used the scent recording device that the pack kept for territory disputes. A small, sophisticated piece of equipment that could capture and preserve scent profiles for evidence during formal challenges. He activated it in the hallway where Keira had just walked. Where her mate bond scent was strongest. Where every molecule of connection to Cade was visible in the air.
The device beeped softly, capturing everything.
Marcus pocketed it and walked away. The scent profile would be undeniable proof. Combined with his testimony, with Derek's support, with seventeen other witnesses, Keira wouldn't have a chance.
That night, Marcus stood on the ridge overlooking Shadowpine territory. The pack house glowed below him, peaceful and content. But not for long. In three days, everything would change. In three days, his plan would be set in motion.
He thought about the challenge fight. About the moment Keira's black wolf had torn through his defenses. About the humiliation of watching her take the position he deserved. About two years of smiling while rage ate him alive.
Tomorrow, he would start making calls to the regional Alphas. Soft calls. Just requests to listen to something important. By the time the gathering happened, every Alpha would be expecting an announcement.
Keira Blackthorn was going to fall.
And Marcus Thorne was going to be standing when she did.
