Chapter 6 - The Summons

Kael POV:

The chains weren't supposed to hurt.

That was the first thing Kael understood when the palace guards came for him after the Finals. Ceremonial chains, they called them. The kind that Royal Champions wore when being escorted to their formal appointment. Not punishment chains. Not something meant to degrade or imprison.

Except they felt exactly like prison.

Kael's wrists were locked in metal that was smooth and heavy and unforgiving. The guards were polite about it. Professional. They didn't drag him or hurt him. They simply escorted him from the fighters' quarters where he'd spent the last three days in a daze, unable to eat or sleep or think about anything except Adrian's voice saying his name.

Now he was walking through the palace, and everything was wrong.

The hallways were made of marble that probably cost more than his entire village made in a year. The ceilings stretched up so far that Kael had to crane his neck to see them. Servants lined the corridors, and they all stared at him. Not with kindness. Not with respect. With confusion. Like they were trying to understand how someone like him could possibly exist in a space this important.

Nobles whispered as he passed.

Kael heard the words even though they tried to keep their voices low. Commoner. Impossible. Too dangerous. Some of the nobles looked angry. Some looked afraid. All of them looked like they wanted him gone.

One noble woman actually turned away as he passed, like his presence was contaminating.

Kael's heart was hammering in his chest.

This was a mistake. Adrian had made a terrible mistake choosing him. The kingdom was never going to accept a commoner from the outer villages as Royal Champion. The system was built to keep people like Kael out. Built to keep power inside the families that already had it.

But Adrian had chosen him anyway.

The guards stopped at a door that looked like every other door in this endless hallway. Marble. Heavy. Important.

"The prince will see you soon," one guard said. "You'll wait here."

They removed the chains before stepping back out. Kael rubbed his wrists and watched the marks the metal had left on his skin. Red circles. Evidence that he'd been bound. Evidence that he didn't belong here.

The door closed.

Kael was alone in a chamber that was bigger than his family's entire house. There was a window that looked out over the kingdom. There were chairs made of something soft that probably cost more than his father's forge ever made. There were paintings on the walls that Kael didn't understand but knew were expensive.

There was nothing to do but wait.

Hours passed.

Kael tried to sit. Couldn't. Tried to stand still. Couldn't. Paced the chamber instead, his boots making sounds on the marble floor. Thought about running. Thought about walking out and back to the fighters' quarters and pretending none of this was happening.

Thought about Adrian.

Thought about the moment in the arena when Adrian had looked at him and said those words. I want him. Like Kael was something the prince needed. Something the prince had chosen.

The sun moved across the window. Shadows changed. Kael's panic grew with every passing moment. What if Adrian wasn't coming? What if the king had forbidden it? What if this was some kind of test, and Kael was failing by being here at all?

What if Adrian had changed his mind?

Kael's chest felt tight with fear.

Then the door opened.

Adrian stepped inside, and everything changed.

The prince looked different without his throne. Not smaller. Somehow bigger. More real. More dangerous. He wasn't wearing his formal robes anymore. He was wearing simple clothes. Dark pants. A white shirt. His golden hair was slightly messy like he'd been running his hands through it.

He looked like a man who'd been panicking.

Adrian closed the door behind him without looking at it. His eyes were on Kael. Only on Kael. Like the rest of the world had disappeared and there was only this moment and this chamber and the space between them.

"Leave us," Adrian said, and Kael realized that there were guards standing inside the chamber. He hadn't even noticed them. They bowed and exited immediately without question.

Then Kael was alone with the prince.

Really alone. Just the two of them in a room with doors that were probably locked now. With no one who could interrupt or stop whatever was about to happen. With everything Kael had been trying not to want standing right in front of him.

Adrian looked at him like he was starving and Kael was food.

"Everyone thinks I'm insane," Adrian said quietly. His voice was rough. Exhausted. Like he'd been screaming. "My father forbade me from choosing you. Cassandra threatened to resign. The entire council voted against it. Nobles are calling for me to reverse the decision."

Kael couldn't speak.

"I chose you anyway," Adrian continued, and he took a step closer. "I stood in front of the entire kingdom and told them that a commoner from the outer villages is my Royal Champion. I gave them no explanation. Gave them no political justification. Just chose you."

Another step. Kael could see Adrian's hands shaking. Could see the barely controlled desperation in the prince's expression.

"They think I'm weak," Adrian said. "They think emotion has clouded my judgment. My father is considering stripping me of my position. There are talks of having you executed for seducing the crown. Cassandra is investigating us. Everything is falling apart."

Kael's breath came fast. This was treason. Adrian was speaking about defying the king. About throwing away his birthright. About choices that would destroy them both.

Adrian was standing in front of him now. Close enough to touch. Close enough that Kael could see the blue of his eyes clearly. Close enough that he could smell the scent of him. Something like soap and metal and fear.

"I don't care," Adrian whispered. "I don't care about any of it anymore."

He reached out and took Kael's hand.

The touch was electric. Real. Impossible. Adrian's hand was warm and shaking slightly and perfectly right in his. Kael wanted to pull away. Wanted to protect the prince from whatever disaster was coming. Wanted to do the right thing and walk out of this chamber and disappear.

He didn't pull away.

"I chose you," Adrian said, and his voice was completely different now. Raw. Honest. Like he was finally letting Kael see what was actually underneath all that royal control. "Not because of the tournament. Not because you won. Not because of any political reason that my advisors would understand."

Kael's entire body was vibrating.

Adrian stepped closer, and now there was barely any space between them. Now Kael could feel the warmth radiating from Adrian's body. Now everything was real and dangerous and absolutely impossible to stop.

"Because when I look at you," Adrian said, "I remember how to feel alive."

The words hung in the air between them like a confession. Like Adrian had just admitted something that would change everything. Kael's entire world cracked open.

This wasn't about the tournament. This wasn't about politics or duty or anything that made logical sense. Adrian felt something for him. Actually felt something. The prince had risked everything to choose him because Adrian needed him to.

Because Adrian loved him.

Kael understood that with complete clarity. Understood that Adrian was standing in front of him with all his walls down and all his honesty exposed. Understood that this prince, this untouchable golden man who should have been completely out of reach, had chosen to feel something for a commoner.

Kael opened his mouth to respond, but he had no words.

Adrian's other hand came up and touched Kael's face. Just his cheek. Just the gentlest touch. Like the prince was terrified that Kael might disappear if he pushed too hard.

"I know this is insane," Adrian said softly. "I know this could get you killed. I know I'm asking you to help me destroy everything. But when you're gone, I can't breathe. When you're fighting in the arena, I can't think about anything else. When our eyes meet, I feel like I'm finally understanding what it means to be alive."

Kael's eyes were burning.

This was the moment. This was when he should tell Adrian that it was dangerous. That they needed to be careful. That the kingdom would never accept this. That his father would execute Kael. That Cassandra was already suspicious and investigating.

This was when Kael should do the right thing.

Instead, Adrian leaned forward, and Kael realized what was about to happen. The prince was going to kiss him. Right here in this chamber with guards outside and spies probably watching and everything at stake.

Adrian was going to kiss him because he couldn't not anymore.

Kael's hand found the back of Adrian's neck. His fingers tangled in golden hair. And when Adrian's lips met his, it felt like the entire kingdom shifted on its axis.

It felt like falling and flying and breaking and being born all at once.

It felt like choosing.

The kiss lasted only a moment. Adrian pulled back and pressed his forehead against Kael's forehead, breathing hard.

"The king wants to see you tomorrow," Adrian whispered. "There's going to be a formal presentation. You'll be given your chambers near mine. Everything will look official and proper. But Kael, I need to warn you."

Kael's heart was still hammering.

"What?" he managed.

Adrian's hands gripped his shoulders like he was afraid Kael would vanish.

"Cassandra knows," Adrian said. "Or she's starting to know. She was watching us. And if she confirms her suspicions before we can figure out how to protect you, the king will have you executed for seducing the crown. There's no crime worse than that. No mercy. Just death."

Kael stood frozen, understanding that everything had just changed forever.

That Adrian had just kissed him.

That they were both now in mortal danger.

That there was no going back from this moment.

And that he wouldn't change a single second of it.
