Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Truths that Refused To Stay Hidden

Amara felt her entire world tilt.

Chioma's words echoed in her ears like thunder.

"I know about the baby."

Her heart dropped instantly, slamming painfully against her chest.

No.

No, this couldn't be happening.

Slowly, she turned her head to look at Tunde.

His expression mirrored her shock.

So… he didn't tell her.

That meant—

Chioma found out on her own.

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Heavy. Dangerous.

Amara swallowed hard, forcing herself to speak.

"How?"

Her voice came out dry, almost unrecognizable.

Chioma stepped inside without waiting to be invited, her heels clicking against the floor like a ticking time bomb.

"Does it matter?" she replied coldly, her eyes scanning the room before settling back on Amara.

"Yes, it does," Amara said, her voice firmer now. "Because I didn't tell you."

Chioma's lips curved into a faint, humorless smile.

"No," she said. "You didn't."

Her gaze flickered briefly to Tunde before returning to Amara.

"But secrets have a way of exposing themselves… don't they?"

Tunde stepped forward, his voice tense.

"Chioma, this isn't the place—"

"Then where is the place, Tunde?" she snapped, turning sharply to face him. "At our wedding reception? Or maybe on our honeymoon?"

The word our sounded like poison in the air.

Amara flinched slightly.

Chioma noticed.

Of course she did.

Her attention shifted fully back to Amara now.

Her eyes softened… but not with kindness.

With something far more unsettling.

"Tell me," Chioma said quietly. "How long?"

Amara hesitated.

Her instinct was to lie. To deny everything.

But something about Chioma's gaze told her that would be useless.

"…Five weeks," she admitted.

The words felt heavy as they left her lips.

Final.

Irreversible.

Chioma inhaled slowly, as if steadying herself.

Five weeks.

That meant—

It happened before the wedding.

Before everything.

Her jaw tightened slightly.

But she didn't explode.

She didn't scream.

And somehow… that was even more terrifying.

Tunde ran a hand over his face, clearly overwhelmed.

"Chioma, listen—"

"No," she cut him off sharply. "You listen."

Her voice dropped, low and controlled.

"I married you today."

The statement hung in the air like a reminder.

A warning.

"And now I find out that the woman you were supposed to leave behind…"

Her eyes slid to Amara.

"…is carrying your child."

Amara felt her stomach twist painfully.

She wanted to speak. To defend herself.

But what could she even say?

There was no defense.

Only truth.

"I didn't plan this," Amara said finally, her voice breaking slightly.

Chioma let out a soft laugh.

"Oh, I'm sure you didn't," she said. "Just like I didn't plan to fall in love with the same man as my best friend."

The words hit like a slap.

Amara's breath caught.

"What?"

Tunde's head snapped toward Chioma.

"Chioma…"

But she ignored him.

Her eyes stayed locked on Amara.

"You think this is all one-sided?" she continued. "You think I just came and took your man?"

Amara's heart pounded.

"Isn't that exactly what you did?"

Chioma shook her head slowly.

"No," she said softly. "What I did… was fall in love with someone who was already taken."

Silence.

"But the difference between us," she added, her voice sharpening slightly, "is that I was willing to fight for him."

Amara's chest tightened.

"And I wasn't?" she asked.

Chioma tilted her head slightly.

"Were you?"

The question lingered.

Uncomfortable.

Painful.

Amara didn't respond.

Because deep down…

She wasn't sure.

Tunde stepped between them, his voice firm now.

"This isn't helping anyone."

Chioma looked at him, her expression unreadable.

"No," she agreed. "It's not."

Then she took a step closer.

"But what will help… is deciding what happens next."

Amara's heart skipped.

"What do you mean?"

Chioma's gaze dropped briefly to Amara's stomach.

Then back up again.

"I mean," she said slowly, "we can't pretend this baby doesn't exist."

Tunde nodded immediately.

"I already said I'm taking responsibility—"

Chioma raised a hand, stopping him.

"I'm not talking to you."

Her eyes returned to Amara.

"I'm talking to her."

The room went completely still.

Amara felt her throat go dry.

"What are you saying?"

Chioma took another step forward.

Close enough now that there was no space left between them.

Her voice dropped to a near whisper.

"You have two choices."

Amara's heart pounded louder.

"What choices?"

Chioma's eyes hardened.

"Keep the baby…" she said slowly.

"…and destroy everything."

Amara felt her chest tighten painfully.

"Or?"

Chioma's expression didn't change.

"Or you walk away."

The words landed heavily.

"What?"

"You leave," Chioma continued. "You disappear from our lives. You forget Tunde. You forget everything."

Amara stared at her in disbelief.

"And my child?"

Chioma hesitated for a split second.

Just a second.

But Amara saw it.

That tiny hesitation said everything.

"No…" Amara whispered, shaking her head slowly. "No, you don't get to decide that."

Chioma's jaw tightened.

"I'm not deciding," she said. "I'm offering you a way out."

"A way out?" Amara repeated, her voice rising. "You call this a way out?"

"Yes," Chioma said firmly. "Because if you stay…"

She paused.

Her eyes darkening.

"…things will get very ugly."

A chill ran down Amara's spine.

That didn't sound like a warning.

It sounded like a promise.

Tunde stepped forward quickly.

"Enough!"

Both women turned to him.

"I'm not letting either of you make decisions like this," he said firmly. "This is my child too!"

"And I'm your wife," Chioma shot back immediately.

The word hit again.

Harder this time.

Amara felt like she was suffocating.

Trapped between love, betrayal, and something far more dangerous.

Her heart.

Her child.

Her future.

Everything was on the line.

She took a slow step back.

Then another.

"I need time," she said quietly.

Neither of them responded.

But their eyes followed her every movement.

Amara reached the door and opened it.

The cool night air hit her face instantly.

She didn't look back.

Couldn't.

If she did… she might break.

As she stepped outside, one thought echoed loudly in her mind—

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Cliffhanger:

And somewhere deep inside her…

Amara knew one thing for certain—

Someone was going to lose everything.
