Cassian POV
The scouts reported her before she even reached the compound gates.
A lone female wolf approaching from the southern territories. No pack scent. No aggressive intent. Just a young woman walking alone through frozen land asking for asylum.
Cassian was with Kael in the library when Ronan came to find him.
"We have a visitor requesting sanctuary," his beta said, his tone carrying a note of warning. "Beautiful female. Claims she's fleeing an abusive situation."
Cassian didn't look up from the book Kael was reading to him, her voice still halting but getting stronger every day.
"Pack law is clear," Cassian said. "We grant asylum to anyone who asks."
"I know," Ronan said. "But something feels off."
Kael looked between them, her silver eyes alert. Her wolf could sense Ronan's unease. Cassian felt her tense against his side.
"Bring her in," Cassian said. "We'll assess her situation."
By evening, the visitor had been bathed and clothed and brought to the main hall. Her name was Mira Ashwood. She was beautiful in a way that seemed calculated. Ice-blonde hair. Blue eyes that held no warmth. A smile that could charm wolves without trying.
She told a story about escaping an abusive older brother. About needing sanctuary somewhere safe. Her voice was soft and vulnerable and completely believable.
Pack law demanded he accept her claim.
But something in Cassian's wolf didn't trust her.
Over the next few days, Mira moved through the compound like water finding its way through cracks. She befriended Lyra immediately, sitting with the healer and listening to her talk about pack medicine. She flattered Ronan with questions about his strategy and leadership. She charmed the younger warriors with her grace and easy manner.
Everyone liked her.
Everyone except Kael.
The moment Mira laid eyes on Cassian's mate, her smile froze for just a second. Long enough for the coldness to show through. Then the warmth returned and she extended a hand to Kael.
"I've heard so much about you," Mira said sweetly. "It's wonderful to finally meet Cassian's mate."
Kael looked at the hand like it might bite her. Her wolf was already bristling, already sensing something dangerous beneath the pretty exterior.
"Kael," she said simply, not taking the offered hand.
Mira's smile didn't waver but her eyes went glacial. She dropped her hand and turned back to Cassian like Kael had already become irrelevant.
Three days after Mira's arrival, Cassian was walking through the compound hallway when he felt someone step into his path.
Mira stood there in the shadows, her expression transformed from her public sweetness into something sharper. Something hungry.
"I've missed you," she said quietly.
Cassian kept walking. She followed.
"Do you remember?" Mira continued. "Three years ago your father wanted to make a political alliance with my family. They promised me to you. We were supposed to be bonded by now."
Cassian stopped. He'd forgotten about that agreement because he'd made his position clear. He'd refused the arrangement publicly, humiliating Mira in front of both packs. It had been necessary. He wouldn't have accepted a mate chosen by politics instead of the moon goddess.
He still wouldn't.
"That was a long time ago," Cassian said coldly. "And it's not relevant now."
"You're right," Mira said, stepping closer. "It's not relevant because you've lost your mind. You've chosen a cursed rogue over everything. Over the pack's stability. Over what would have been a powerful union."
"She's not cursed," Cassian said flatly.
"She's dangerous," Mira continued like he hadn't spoken. "Everyone whispers about it. The ritual scars. The ancient language she screams in her sleep. The way she slaughtered those rogues like an animal." Mira's voice dropped to something that sounded almost sympathetic. "The pack doesn't trust her, Cassian. They're just afraid to say it because you're their alpha."
"The pack accepted her when she protected their children," Cassian said. "Which is more than they did for you in the same amount of time."
Mira flinched. Her mask slipped for just a moment and he saw the real rage underneath. The hunger for power. The jealousy that burned hot enough to consume everything.
"You'll regret this," she said quietly. "Choosing her over a woman who actually understands pack politics. You'll regret it when she destroys everything you've built."
Cassian turned away from her, done with the conversation. "Stay or leave. I don't care. But stay away from Kael."
He walked back toward his quarters without waiting for a response.
What he didn't see was Mira watching him go, her beautiful face twisted with fury and something darker. Revenge. Pure, cold, calculated revenge.
That night, alone in her guest quarters, Mira reached under the mattress and pulled out a small object that no pack member should have.
A phone.
She activated it carefully, checking to make sure no one was watching. The device was old, hidden away from the magical bonds that kept modern technology useless in werewolf territories. This one worked because she'd had it specially shielded. This one was her lifeline to the outside world.
She typed a message with shaking hands, her rage burning so hot she could barely focus.
I found the Moonshadow girl. She is exactly where you said. Come quickly, brother.
The response came almost immediately, like her brother had been waiting for this message for years.
Bring her to us alive. Theron's message read. I will make her pay for what her tribe took from our family. And when I'm done with her, we will burn Northern Ridge to ash.
Mira smiled, and it was the coldest, cruelest expression that had ever crossed her beautiful face.
Cassian had rejected her. He'd chosen a feral rogue over everything she could offer.
Now she would make him pay for it.
Now she would bring down his entire world.
