Chapter 5 - The Road to Velkar

The tremor that passed beneath Ravenholt left the village uneasy long after the ground had grown still again.

Lanterns appeared in many windows as frightened villagers stepped outside their homes, whispering to one another beneath the strange glow of the three moons.

Earthquakes were not unknown in the northern lands, yet this one had felt different.

It had come without warning, rising suddenly from the depths of the earth before fading just as quickly.

The wind that followed carried a distant echo from the mountains.

Not thunder.

Not falling stone.

Something deeper.

Something alive.

Caelan stood beside the chapel steps, the sword in his hand now fully uncovered.

The runes along the blade continued to glow faintly blue, brighter than they had ever shone before.

Brother Aldren watched the weapon carefully.

"The relic has awakened," the monk said quietly.

"It reacts to the presence of the demon beneath the mountains."

Caelan looked toward the dark line of peaks far beyond the forest.

The Velkar Mountains were little more than shadows from this distance, but the tremor had come from that direction.

"If something has broken free," he said slowly, "then we should go there."

Aldren frowned.

"That would be the most dangerous place in all of Aethera."

"Which is exactly why someone must see what has happened."

The monk studied the young traveler in silence.

Caelan did not speak like a reckless adventurer.

His voice carried the weight of someone who already knew the path ahead would lead into darkness.

Finally Aldren sighed.

"The old texts speak of twenty-one demons sealed across the world. If even one of them escapes its prison…"

He did not finish the sentence.

Neither man needed to imagine the devastation such a creature could bring.

The monk looked again toward the glowing blade.

"That sword may be the only thing capable of fighting it."

Caelan wrapped the cloth around the weapon once more and secured it across his back.

"Then we cannot remain here."

Aldren glanced back toward the chapel behind him.

His library, his quiet life, and the countless books he had studied for decades were all inside that small stone building.

Leaving meant abandoning everything he had known.

Yet the sky above Ravenholt told him the world itself had already begun to change.

At last he nodded.

"I will come with you."

Caelan raised an eyebrow slightly.

"You would leave the village?"

"I have spent my life studying the past," Aldren replied.

"If the ancient war is returning, then the knowledge in my head may prove useful."

A cold wind swept across the valley again, stronger than before.

Clouds moved across the moons, briefly dimming their strange light.

From somewhere within the forest an owl cried sharply into the night.

The sound echoed across the frozen fields like a warning.

Within the hour the two men prepared to leave Ravenholt.

Aldren packed several old scrolls and a small leather-bound book into a travel satchel.

These texts contained fragments of information about the relics and the ancient demons.

If they were going to face what waited beneath the Velkar Mountains, such knowledge might prove essential.

Caelan secured his cloak against the cold and tightened the straps of his travel pack.

The road north would be difficult even under normal conditions.

In winter it became a harsh path through forests and rocky passes where few travelers dared to venture.

Before leaving, Aldren paused beside the chapel door one last time.

His eyes lifted toward the sky.

The three moons were closer now, their strange alignment forming a silent arc across the heavens.

He whispered an old prayer under his breath.

"May the First Light guide us."

Moments later the two figures stepped onto the northern road.

Their lantern cast a small circle of light upon the frozen ground as they left the quiet village behind.

Ravenholt slowly disappeared into the darkness behind them.

Ahead lay the endless forest and the jagged mountains beyond.

Miles away beneath those mountains, the cavern prison continued to crack apart.

Great chunks of stone fell from the walls as the ancient magic weakened further.

The demon within the chains had begun to move its limbs for the first time in a thousand years.

Each movement strained the runes that held it captive.

A deep rumbling laughter echoed through the cavern.

"The world has forgotten fear," the creature growled.

Its burning eye glowed brighter in the darkness.

"But it will remember."

One of the ancient chains snapped with a thunderous crack.

Above the mountains the Red Moon climbed higher beside the Pale and Blue.

And along the cold northern road, Caelan and Aldren continued their journey toward the place where the first demon of Aethera was beginning to awaken.
