Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: He Stepped Into the Rules

11:40 a.m., Yunchuan Financial Center.

The skyscraper rose into the sky, its glass exterior reflecting cold white light under the sun, making the entire building look sharp and distant.

This was one of the true cores of the city, where power and resources gathered at the highest level.

Ethan Cole stepped out of his car as the black sports car came to a smooth stop, closing the door calmly before walking forward without hesitation.

He did not adjust his clothes or pause, and there was nothing particularly eye-catching about his appearance.

But compared to a few days ago, his presence had completely changed, no longer tense or restrained, but steady and controlled.

The security guard at the entrance glanced at him out of routine, but paused slightly after noticing the license plate.

"Mr. Cole."

The tone shifted immediately, becoming more cautious than before.

Ethan nodded without speaking.

"Please come in."

There was no registration and no questioning, and he was allowed through directly.

This small change did not seem obvious, but it clearly showed that his position had already begun to shift.

The elevator moved upward quickly, passing floor after floor as the numbers continued to rise.

Thirty, fifty, eighty.

Until it reached the top.

As the height increased, the noise of the outside world seemed to fade away, leaving only the quiet hum of the machinery.

When the doors opened, the silence outside felt almost unreal.

The corridor was spacious and spotless, with no unnecessary movement or sound, as if it had been cleared in advance for a specific kind of guest.

Two men in suits were already waiting.

"This way."

Ethan followed them forward.

Glass walls lined both sides of the corridor, revealing the entire city spread out below.

Traffic moved slowly in the distance, forming thin streams of light, but Ethan did not stop or look.

He simply continued walking.

The meeting room door opened.

Only one man was inside.

He sat at the head of the table, dressed in a well-fitted suit, calm and composed.

He did not stand or greet, only lifting his gaze toward Ethan.

"Sit."

The tone was neutral, almost casual.

Ethan walked forward and sat down across from him.

The long table separated them, and the silence between them was not awkward, but filled with a sense of evaluation.

After a few seconds, the man spoke first.

"You're younger than I expected."

Ethan looked at him and replied evenly.

"You're more direct than I expected."

The man smiled slightly, showing a trace of interest.

"Good, then let's not waste time."

He raised his hand, and the screen behind him lit up.

A full set of data appeared, displaying Ethan's entire trajectory in detail.

From thirty-seven dollars, to the lottery, to borrowed funds, to rapid capital growth, and finally to citywide influence.

Every step was clearly recorded without omission.

"Your path is clean," the man said calmly.

"No unnecessary moves, no trial and error."

His tone was steady, as if stating an objective conclusion.

"This is not normal."

Ethan did not explain and simply looked back at him.

"So I have two conclusions," the man continued.

He raised two fingers.

"Someone is behind you."

"Or you are the variable."

The air in the room seemed to tighten slightly.

Ethan spoke without hesitation.

"Which one do you believe?"

The man looked at him more carefully this time.

"I care about a third question."

"Will you become a problem?"

The atmosphere shifted immediately.

Ethan did not avoid the question.

"What do you think?"

The man paused briefly, as if reassessing.

"Not yet."

"But you're growing too fast."

"Fast enough to disrupt the structure."

Ethan nodded slightly.

"So what do you plan to do?"

The man answered directly.

"I'm giving you a choice."

"Enter, or stay outside."

There was no room for negotiation in his tone.

Ethan leaned back slightly, considering.

"What do I gain if I enter?"

"Resources, rules, and eventually the ability to shape them."

"And the cost?"

"Limits."

"You operate within the system."

The room fell quiet again.

After a few seconds, Ethan spoke.

"And if I don't?"

The man looked at him without hesitation.

"Then you are an external variable."

"And variables have only two outcomes."

"Absorbed, or removed."

The tone remained calm, but absolute.

Ethan smiled faintly.

"You'd prefer the first."

The man nodded.

"You're valuable."

Ethan stood up without hesitation.

"I'll consider it."

The man did not stop him.

"Not for too long."

Ethan turned and walked out of the room.

The corridor was still silent, and the city still lay beneath him.

But this time, everything felt different.

He had already stepped into another level.

His phone vibrated slightly.

"Mission completed."

"Core capital layer accessed."
