Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: THE WHISPERING VINES

THE LAND OF SOUL GRADERS

Chapter 2 — The Whispering Vines

The forest did not forget.

Even hours after the battle, the broken vines still lay scattered across the ground where the Soul Beast had attacked.

Yi Kun returned to the place just before sunset.

The hunters had already been taken back to the village, badly injured but alive. The elders had ordered everyone to stay away from the forest.

But Yi Kun couldn't.

He crouched beside the torn soil where his vines had erupted earlier.

The earth was still warm.

Slowly, he placed his hand on the ground again.

Thin green roots slipped from beneath the dirt and gently wrapped around his fingers.

"Tell me what happened," Yi Kun whispered.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Then the vines trembled.

Yi Kun closed his eyes.

Images flickered faintly in his mind—not clear pictures, just feelings carried through the plants.

Fear.

Violence.

Something powerful moving deeper inside the forest.

His eyes opened.

"That creature wasn't hunting randomly…" he murmured.

It had been fleeing.

Running away from something.

Yi Kun slowly stood up.

If a Soul Beast had entered this forest, something even worse might be coming.

A Strange Arrow

He pulled the arrow from his belt again.

The same arrow that had saved him earlier.

The craftsmanship was extraordinary. The shaft was balanced perfectly, and the metal tip carried faint markings that Yi Kun didn't recognize.

"This doesn't belong to any hunter here," he said quietly.

Someone skilled had fired it.

But whoever that person was… they had disappeared without revealing themselves.

Yi Kun looked deeper into the forest.

"Were you watching me…?"

The wind rustled through the trees, but there was no answer.

The Night Warning

That evening the village gathered in the central square.

Torches burned around the wooden meeting platform while the village elder spoke.

"A Soul Beast entering our lands is not normal," the elder said gravely. "Everyone must remain cautious."

Murmurs spread through the crowd.

Some villagers looked frightened.

Others looked angry.

Yi Kun stood quietly among them.

Then Bo Lin leaned toward him and whispered,

"You're the only one crazy enough to chase that thing."

Yi Kun sighed.

"I didn't chase it."

Bo Lin raised an eyebrow.

"Really? Because everyone says you fought it."

"I slowed it down," Yi Kun corrected.

"Barely."

Bo Lin smirked.

"Still Level 1 and already fighting Soul Beasts. You're trying to get yourself killed."

Yi Kun didn't respond.

Instead, he glanced again at the strange arrow hidden under his cloak.

Someone out there had skills far beyond a village hunter.

But why help him?

And why disappear?

A Different Kind of Monster

Later that night, long after the village fell asleep, something moved in the mountains far beyond Ling Grove.

A young man walked alone along a rocky path.

His clothes were torn.

His breathing was uneven.

And his eyes…

…glowed faintly in the darkness.

He collapsed against a tree, gripping his arm tightly.

"Not again…" he whispered.

A deep growl escaped his throat.

His bones began to shift painfully.

Muscles twisted beneath his skin.

Fur slowly pushed through the surface of his arms.

The young man clenched his teeth, struggling to control the change.

"I won't lose control…"

But the transformation continued.

Sharp claws extended from his fingers.

His senses exploded with sound and smell.

The world suddenly felt wild.

Dangerous.

Alive.

For a moment, the beast inside him tried to take over.

Then—

The young man slammed his fist into the tree beside him.

"Enough!"

The transformation stopped halfway.

His breathing slowed.

The claws slowly retracted.

Sweat covered his face.

"This power…" he muttered quietly.

"It's getting stronger."

Far below the mountain, the lights of a small village flickered in the distance.

Ling Grove.

The young man stared at it silently.

Then he turned away and disappeared into the forest.

Meanwhile…

Back in the village, Yi Kun lay awake staring at the ceiling.

The vines outside his window moved gently in the night wind.

But suddenly they stiffened.

Every leaf trembled.

Yi Kun sat up immediately.

"What is it?"

The plants felt…

Uneasy again.

Something was moving in the wilderness.

Something powerful.

Yi Kun slowly stood and walked to the window.

The moonlight spilled across the quiet fields.

For a moment everything looked peaceful.

But deep inside the forest…

A low growl echoed through the night.

And the vines around Yi Kun's house trembled.

Something had awakened.

And this time…
