Chapter 36 - Chapter 34

Inside the dropship camp, the fragile illusion of order was violently shattering.

Bellamy grabbed Clarke's arm, trying to stop her before she reached the center of the camp. "Clarke, you need to keep this quiet," he hissed, his eyes darting toward the teenagers working near the gates. "The fear of the Grounders is the only thing making them build that wall and keeping us safe. If they think the threat is gone, they'll stop working."

But Clarke was past reason. "That knife belongs to John Murphy," she shot back, yanking her arm free. "The camp has a right to know that he tried to murder Wells!"

Clarke stormed past him, holding the blood-stained blade high, and marched directly toward the fire pits. "Murphy!" she screamed, her voice echoing over the crackling flames.

Murphy turned, his brow furrowing as Clarke shoved the bloody hunting knife into his chest. "You're going to pay for this," she seethed.

"I didn't do it!" Murphy spat, batting the knife away.

"You tried to kill Jasper, too!" Octavia piped up from the crowd that was rapidly forming around them, her voice fueling the rising tension.

Murphy glared at her. "I don't have to answer to any of you."

Bellamy stepped between them, trying to physically wedge himself into the conflict, but the energy of the camp was already spiraling out of control. Clarke turned to the surrounding crowd, her grief and fury bubbling over. "Is this what you want? A society with absolutely no rules? Where anyone can just be murdered in the dark?"

"No!" Connor shouted from the back of the crowd, his face twisted in anger. "We should float him!"

A deadly murmur of agreement rippled through the delinquents.

"It's justice!" Connor yelled.

"It's not justice, it's revenge!" Clarke argued, suddenly realizing the horrific chain reaction she had just triggered.

But it was too late. The camp didn't want an investigation. They wanted a scapegoat. Connor began chanting, "Float him! Float him!" and the mob instantly devolved into bloodthirsty animals.

Dozens of teenagers surged forward, tackling Murphy to the dirt. They beat him, binding his wrists behind his back and shoving a dirty rag into his mouth as he kicked and screamed.

Someone threw a rope over a thick tree branch, fashioning a crude noose and violently wrapping it around Murphy's neck. They hauled him to his feet, forcing him to stand precariously on an overturned wooden crate.

Clarke grabbed at their arms, terrified. "Stop! This isn't what I meant! Stop it!"

Connor turned to Bellamy, the mob chanting feverishly for their leader to finish the job. Bellamy stood paralyzed. He realized with sickening clarity that the mob was completely beyond his control. He looked at Murphy, terrified and gagged on the crate, and then at Clarke, who was pleading with him.

"I know you're not a killer," Clarke begged.

Bellamy couldn't bring himself to do it. He took a slow step back, refusing to be their executioner.

Seeing Bellamy's hesitation, Connor sneered. Without a second thought, Connor lashed out and kicked the crate out from under Murphy's feet.

Murphy dropped. The rope snapped taut with a sickening creak, and Murphy began to twist and wriggle violently in the air, his face turning purple as he suffocated. Finn came sprinting out of the dropship, screaming for them to stop, but Connor and two other boys grabbed him, violently holding him back.

As Murphy kicked desperately in the air, his eyes bulging, a sudden, violent rush of wind tore through the center of the camp.

Aleksander didn't yell for them to stop. He didn't waste time on words. He simply moved.

With blinding, impossible speed, Aleksander breached the mob. He didn't even slow down as he drew a sleek, curved karambit from his belt. The blade flashed silver in the firelight as he slashed effortlessly through the thick hemp rope.

Murphy hit the dirt with a heavy thud, tearing the gag from his mouth and gasping violently for air as he clawed at the severed noose around his neck.

The mob roared in outrage and surged forward, ready to tear Aleksander apart for interrupting their kill.

Aleksander stepped directly over Murphy's gasping body and turned to face the hundred. He didn't raise his weapon. Instead, he cast a subtle, wordless intimidation spell, letting the terrifying power in his blood bleed into his eyes.

He radiated a dark, predatory menace so utterly suffocating and lethal that the entire front row of the mob physically recoiled, stumbling over each other to back away from him.

Murphy looked up from the dirt, wheezing heavily. His eyes locked on Aleksander, Bellamy, and Finn with profound, trembling gratitude.

Aleksander surveyed the terrified crowd, his disgust palpable.

"You want to be savages?" Aleksander's voice was dangerously low, yet it carried over the dead silent camp like a physical blow. "Fine. But know this: the first person who takes a step toward this boy has to go through me. And I promise you, I don't need a rope to snap your necks."

He stepped forward, forcing Connor to shrink back in sheer terror.

"We are not going to randomly lynch people," Aleksander stated with absolute, iron-clad authority. "We find proof, or we do nothing."

From the back of the silent crowd, a small, trembling voice broke the stillness.

"It was me."

The crowd parted as thirteen-year-old Charlotte pushed her way to the front. Tears streamed down her pale face as she looked at Bellamy, and then at Aleksander. "I did it. I killed Wells."

The dead silence in the camp was deafening as the horrific truth settled over them.

"Charlotte," Aleksander stated coldly, his eyes narrowing. "You will be punished."

"Wait," Bellamy interrupted, his voice echoing loudly in the quiet camp.

Bellamy stepped forward, physically placing himself between the crowd and the terrified little girl. His protective instincts flared. He looked out at the faces of the delinquents, knowing he had to de-escalate this before they turned their residual anger on her.

"This isn't just on her," Bellamy announced, his voice rough with guilt. "Charlotte has been having night terrors every single night. She wakes up screaming because she watches Chancellor Jaha float her parents over and over again. It was destroying her."

The anger in the crowd began to falter, replaced by a heavy, uncomfortable recognition. Every single one of them had lost someone to the Ark's ruthless laws.

"I found her crying," Bellamy continued, dragging a hand down his face. "I tried to help. I told her that she couldn't hide from her fears. I told her that if she wanted the nightmares to stop, she had to... she had to slay her demons while she was awake."

A collective, horrified realization washed over the camp.

"She's just a kid," Bellamy pleaded, looking back at Charlotte, who was weeping silently into her hands. "She took it literally. She saw Wells, and she saw his father. She thought she was doing what I told her to do."

The camp fell entirely silent. The bloodlust that had fueled the mob was completely extinguished, replaced by a profound, tragic sadness. No one could bring themselves to blame a traumatized, grieving child who had suffered under the same regime they all hated. And looking at Bellamy's devastated expression, they couldn't blame him either. It was a horrific, tragic misunderstanding born from the cruelty of the Ark.
