Chapter 2 - The Mirror's Secret

The whisper was so close that Ananya could feel a cold breeze against her neck. She scrambled back, her heart thumping against her ribs like a trapped bird. But when she looked around the attic, there was nothing but shadows and the smell of old dust.

She looked back at the mirror. The message—"Help me find the other one"—was slowly fading from the glass. Ananya's hands trembled as she reached out to touch the wooden frame of the mirror. It was carved with strange, intertwined vines and small, eyeless faces.

As she touched a small wooden leaf on the frame, she heard a faint click. A hidden drawer at the base of the mirror slid open. Inside, wrapped in a yellowed piece of silk, was a single silver anklet. It was identical to the sound she had been hearing.

But there was something else. Underneath the anklet lay a photograph from the 1970s. It showed two young girls standing in front of this very house, smiling. They looked like twins, both wearing identical red sarees and silver anklets.

Ananya turned the photo over. In shaky handwriting, it said: "Lata and Malati – Together Forever. June 1976."

Suddenly, the heavy attic door slammed shut on its own. The light from her flashlight began to flicker. In the dim light, Ananya saw the reflection in the mirror change again. The shadow woman was no longer standing behind her—she was reaching out of the glass, her pale, thin hand inches away from Ananya's shoulder.
