Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Reflections in the Dark

The city lights below flickered like tiny fireflies, reflecting against puddles left from a recent rain.

Aya stepped onto the sidewalk, the cold concrete under her shoes grounding her. Ren followed behind, hands in his hoodie pockets, eyes scanning the shadows with the lazy attention of someone who seemed untouchable.

The masked figures from earlier were gone, but the tension hung in the air like thick smoke.

Ren smirked. "I feel like we've been watched our whole lives."

Aya tilted her head, brushing a stray strand of hair from her eyes. "You might be right," she said, voice calm, but a flicker of concern passed across her face. She let it linger for only a moment before straightening.

They moved through the street, side by side, careful to keep pace with each other. The aura around them shimmered faintly — subtle, private, almost imperceptible to anyone not attuned.

Ren's hand twitched. A soft spark of his sketches floated off the sleeve of his hoodie. Only Aya noticed. She caught it, eyes widening just slightly.

"Not bad," she murmured, brushing past his hand as if by accident.

He glanced at her. "Huh?"

"Nothing," she said, offering the tiniest smile — the kind she rarely shared. Just for him.

Ren leaned closer, shoulders almost brushing hers. Not intentionally, just natural.

"You're calm," he said. "I like that."

She shrugged, letting a small laugh slip. "Don't let it fool you. I can panic."

He grinned. "Good to know."

The street remained quiet, empty of bystanders, and the distant hum of the city felt protective in its way.

Ren paused, studying the reflections in a puddle at his feet. "We handled that pretty well back there."

Aya's hand flicked slightly against his as she adjusted her stance. "We did. But I'm still not sure I trust all of it. Not yet."

Ren chuckled softly. "Neither do I. But… it's better with someone else watching your back."

Aya's eyes softened for a split second. She let him see it. Then she blinked and returned her usual calm expression.

"Yeah," she said quietly. "Better with someone else."

They walked on. Close, careful, unspoken understanding weaving between them.

A shadow moved across the corner of her vision. Nothing tangible. Just the faint hint of a presence lingering, watching.

Ren didn't react. Aya's heart rate ticked up a fraction, though her face remained neutral. She realized she liked that he didn't flinch.

For a moment, the world was just the two of them — breathing, moving, connected in a way neither fully admitted aloud.

A faint breeze carried the scent of wet asphalt and city lights. Aya tilted her head slightly, brushing her hand against his sleeve again. Just a little, private, intimate.

Ren noticed. And this time, his grin lingered.

Because, for the first time tonight, they weren't just surviving.

They were together.
