Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

It was the last evening of autumn. The sky was painted with reddish sunlight, and an unusual silence surrounded everything. Under an old jackfruit tree beside a small village river sat Raihan. Looking at the flowing water, he seemed to be searching for many memories of his life.

It was beside this very river that he had first met Neela.

That day had also been a similar evening. Raihan was returning from college when he noticed a girl sitting by the river, crying. There was a strange pain in her eyes. With a little hesitation, Raihan walked closer and asked,

"Why are you crying?"

The girl looked up in surprise. Wiping her tears, she replied softly,

"Nothing… just like that."

Raihan understood that the word "nothing" was hiding a much bigger story.

They did not talk much that day. The only thing he learned was the girl's name—Neela.

After that, they began to meet often. Sometimes by the river, sometimes in front of the college, and sometimes at the bookstore.

Gradually, they became friends.

Neela was a very calm and quiet girl. But there was always a strange sadness hidden in her eyes. Sometimes Raihan would ask,

"Why are you always so quiet?"

Neela would smile gently and say,

"Not every story in a person's life can be told, Raihan."

Whenever Raihan heard those words, something would move in his heart. He felt that the girl must have been carrying many hidden pains in her life.

Days passed slowly, and their friendship grew deeper.

One afternoon, they were sitting by the river as usual. Suddenly Neela said,

"Raihan, if someday I suddenly disappear… will you remember me?"

Raihan looked surprised.

"Why are you saying something like that? Where would you go?"

Neela looked up at the sky with a faint smile.

"I don't know… but life does not always remain the same."

Raihan did not take her words seriously then. He simply said,

"If you ever go somewhere, I will find you."

Neela just smiled quietly.

But Raihan could not understand how much pain was hidden behind that smile.

One day, suddenly, Neela stopped coming to college.

At first Raihan thought she might be sick. But days passed, and there was still no news of her.

He searched for her everywhere. He asked friends, teachers, and many others, but no one knew anything.

Every afternoon he came and sat by the river, hoping Neela might appear again.

But she never came.

Days slowly turned into months.

One day a postman delivered a letter to Raihan. On the envelope it was written—"For Raihan."

The moment he saw the handwriting, he knew it was Neela's.

His hands began to tremble as he quickly opened the letter.

It said—

"Dear Raihan,

When you read this letter, I may already be very far away.

You must be wondering why I suddenly disappeared. The truth is, I did not want to cause you pain, and that is why I did not tell you anything.

I had been suffering from a serious illness for a long time. The doctors said that I might not live very long.

After meeting you, my life suddenly became beautiful. Even if you never realized it, you were the greatest happiness in my life.

I did not want you to suffer the pain of losing me. That is why I left quietly.

If someday you sit beside the river and remember me… just look up at the sky once. Maybe I will be there, shining as a little star, watching you.

Take care, Raihan.

—Neela"

After reading the letter, tears rolled down Raihan's face endlessly.

He looked up at the sky. In the evening sky, one star was shining brightly.

In his heart, Raihan whispered,

"Neela… you once said that if you disappeared, I would find you. But you have gone so far away…"

The wind by the river carried a deep silence.

It felt as if nature itself was crying.

From that day on, every afternoon Raihan comes and sits by the river.

He knows Neela will never return.

Yet he still comes.

Because beside this river their story had begun.

And some stories never truly end.

They simply live on inside a person's heart.
